What are you basing that on, the fact that the media interviewed THREE people the day after and they said they regretted it? EVERY person I know voted for brexit and I don't know anyone that regrets it. The fact that this comment is being upvoted just goes to show that idiots believe anything the liberal media puts out there. They said in the run up to the vote that it wouldn't happen and it would be stupid. They just can't stand being wrong and are now lying and pretending that we regret it.

You do realize there are those who work over 50 hours and still can't afford to pay the bills who really don't have the time because elections have such a small window in an intentionally inconvenient time (ever noticed how it's always a weekday, while other countries have them typically on weekends?). The states with the best voter turn out are the 3 that allow write in ballots, that speaks mountains of how the status quo almost wants low voter turn out.

110% agreed. If everyone HAD to vote, then you'd see a lot fewer efforts by politicians to drive wedges between electorates or focusing exclusively on the groups that show up to polls most often. They'd have no choice but to try to appeal across the board and not just to their pocket power bases.

So with the reduce cost of DEA and private prisons, and adding taxation to weed I doubt it would ruin the country.

I'm voting third party for the top of the ticket because between two evils I choose goofy. To be honest, the local and state elections will have far more direct impact on everyone because that means choosing the people who are actually going to be writing the laws. Every four years Presidents promise things they can't deliver without the full backing of the states and congress, and yet so many people utterly neglect this part of the ballot, leaving just a few people to vote in the same exact politicians in Congress that we all hate. The Tea Party swept in in 2010 due in large part to many people not bothering to go out and vote. Some only bother showing up for the Presidential election, if then, and then they wonder how we end up with such a horribly rigged system.

+TCWFr33St00f good day, its not my country and these are not my elections, so pardon me if I'm speaking out of turn, but the absence of a government with an electoral majority is worse than having a corrupt government. Secondly, the candidates may or may not be eligible, but the state has a whole machinery that runs all affairs. Even someone as high a the president can only do so much and give direction to the state machinery in terms of policy. To cause massive changes in the said said state machinery, he or she would have to make amendments to the constitution, something that requires a bigger majority than for forming a government (at least that's how it happens elsewhere).So as far as I can tell, mediocrity isn't a reason for not voting. As long as a state machinery exists, democracy will exist. Considering the number of countries where the idea of democracy is,well, just an idea, one must do all within one's powers to preserve democracy where one finds it.

Juggler No, it is precisely because of apathy and laziness. Here in America people have no sense of civic responsibility. They just want to complain without participating. It is actually horrible to see how what was the most unique country in history the very bastion of freedom, liberty and a government of the people, for the people and by the people turned to a total apathic and lazy population that couldn't be bothered but loves to be whiny babies because they don't have the perfect candidate. We just turned the country over to the corporate elite, the wealthy banks and scammers. How else can anyone explain how a con artist and out right fraud like Trump could ever have any appeal whatsoever? We value the crass, the misinformation, the manipulative conspiracy theories and made up political scandals and please don't let any of it interrupt the TV reality shows or sports programming. LOL
@KnivesOfTheRound

RhondaH Some of it is due to the electoral system. Some don't vote due to a landslide in favor for one candidate or another. But I agree apathy is a large factor, and so is complacency and ignorance. For some reason people have a real difficulty in discussing politics.

Not voting? Then complaining is not an option. Vote equals voice. Even if you don't like any of the two candidates, one of them will be president. Do yourself a favor and jot down what you liked in Sanders, Cruz, or Johnson and see which (Clinton or Trump) lines up with that the list. BTW there's a lot more to vote on: rights, representatives, senators, judges, commissioners, sheriffs, laws, etc...

I wish Lewis Black had made a slight adjustment in what he said: "get out there and vote AFTER doing some research so you know what you're doing and who you're voting for." An uninformed vote can, in fact, be worse than not voting. Think about it: if you vote on "proposition X" or "candidate X" in your best interests, then you've helped yourself and given your cause +1 votes. If you don't vote, you've neither helped yourself nor have you hurt yourself, so +0 votes. If you vote uninformed and wind up voting against your best interests, you've actually hurt yourself. Instead of giving +1 votes to your side by voting smart or just staying the bleep out of the way and letting other people decide (hopefully people who've done their homework), you've actually given the other side +1 votes, making it even harder for your cause to win than if you'd just stayed home or, even better, done some bloody research. Seriously, how is "just vote" better? I'm voting in November, but I'm making sure to do some bloody research first and if I see something on the ballot that I don't fully understand, then I'm going to skip it.

But why isn't the media talking about those? They are potentially way more important than the presidential election. Because the media are controlled by powerful corporations, that's why. If the media was interested in things that were important to average people, those are the things they'd pay attention to. Instead, they just want us to ratify one or the other of the choices they've presented us with for president. Fuck those guys!

+SpectreDragon with the way that Hillary is courting to Republican donors and politicians, the Democrats are turning into the new Republican party of the 21st century while the current one tears itself up. A strongly supported green party could stop the dems sliding too far right, get them federal funding so they can have a much stronger campaign in 2020, and ensure politicians know that if they don't listen to the progressive voices in the country they will lose a lot of votes. support for third parties and grassroots movements has been essential in history to secure most of the basic rights we now take for granted.
@SpectralKnight
@SpectralKnight 7 жыл бұрын
Ad C My point still stands. Saying that any of the other candidates (besides Hillary and Trump) has ANY shot whatsoever at being president is just lying to yourself. Now true they might hammer some sense into them, but they will still have to choose which side they want to support (Hillary or Donald). And you don't know who the hell they would choose in the end. So voting third-party is basically telling someone else to flip a coin and you are fine with the fact that whomever wins the throw becomes president .

OMG, Troy just figured out that other nationalities besides American use the Internet. It's probably going to be quite the shock when he finds out they're just as worried about us electing a scumbag like Trump as anyone else. If you had half a brain Troy, you'd know how to translate text. Hell, most if the time Google services have that option already. If you did that, you'd see that they really like this show, and compare it to a show from Germany wishing it had some of the same energy. But instead, having the fucking pea sized brain that you have, you automatically became a Nationalist prick assuming they are racist Nazi's because they are talking in their native language, and that scares you because you just finally memorized all the words to twinkle twinkle. Fucking worthless man, and classless. You aren't what's right with America, you are exactly what's so fucking wrong in our country now.

I'm a millennial. Motivate me, please. I really *want* you to. I want to see myself somehow giving a damn about any of this, instead of feeling so incredibly sober at the fact that this farce is what counts to this previous generation as an important decision we're somehow obligated to make; in spite of us actually having no decision or say in why we have to make it according to you. I want to outright choose not to vote until this country has proven to me otherwise that people are worth making their decisions for, assuming our vote matters to begin with. I wanted to believe that it was supposed to be up to the previous generation at some point, to pass the torch on and inspire us to care about the future that you fought for. If you wanted us to start giving a damn about it or wanted us to believe that any of our actions truly have any say in the matter, you would honestly say that you feel disappointed in yourselves. Because the fact that none of us cares, means that you as a generation have failed; and you would admit this.

MotorKoiKarpfen Nonsense. The votes are entered into an electronic system connected to the internet here in America. How do you think they are counted so quickly? People don't physically do that shit anymore. Why is it that votes cannot be directly entered into that system by the taxpayers who pay for its existence? In fact, you CAN vote online in other countries. Canada, Switzerland and France, for example.

Essentially because of the way cryptography works. You can't securely have your votes transmitted and counted digitally and at the same time have anonymity. The point of analogue voting is to have group accountability through open, manual, bi-partisan and recorded counting. I would love for a future where we can vote digitally, but then we also need to be perfectly clear our votes can't be anonymous.

***** Considering I started the "discussion" I should know. There is no such thing as protest vote because it's entire concept, functionality and worth is contingent upon results and change. A protest vote is not a protest vote if it has no effect - by definition that's a throwaway vote. We're done here.
@Icetor01
@Icetor01 8 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, but so many people don't vote (LB said only 55% of the electorate voted in 2012) that not voting is taken as apathy instead of a protest. Also, if the protesters in your examples could have voted to fix their issue, they would have - and they'd have roped others in to help them. Voting is THE way the people reclaim their power and make their choice. If you're unhappy with the choice this year, that's fine; join the club. But ultimately, the loss of your vote can only hurt the candidate you would have voted for, and that has repercussions. There are very real and very important differences between the candidates running this year. If you see one as even slightly worse than the other, you should vote - if only to avoid the greater evil.

Well it's not hard to question democracy. Winston Churchill sad: Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. Robo Batman Really? If you are referring to the communism in CCCP and say that is efficient I believe you can not have any knowledge what so ever about what happened in the world before the 90's. Same go for Kina before the 90's too. Only after they started to adapt to capitalism a bit more things started to go better for them. But that in no way means I think that a 100% capitalistic environment would work even better. You need to mix capitalistic with socialism to have a working society where liberty and justice is for all. No democracy is still better then anything Lenin, Sarlin and the rest of the bolshevists believed in. There idea of socialism, communism, would have even got Karl Marx to express how stupid it was if he had still been alive.

Why vote if you weren't given a decent choice? All of the people saying if you don't vote then you're failing in some way are short-sighted to say the least. If you don't support Hillary don't vote for her, even if you dislike Trump with a passionate the lesser of two evils dilemma will never stop when you continue to feed into it. Vote third party or abstain if you wish, but vote for what you believe in, what you support; none of that "Hillary: At least shes not Trump" bullshit~
