I enjoy your videos. I’ve been a dock builder for over 45 years and just purchased a new push boat with joystick steering. You’ve probably been using joystick for sometime now but I’m trying to get used to it. The other boat has a wheel. Maybe you can do a video on how you steer with joystick.

Thank you for watching Ron. I thought you were going to say that after building docks that I've knocked down for 45 years, thank you. 😂 😂 😂 I have never run a tugboat without a joystick or FFU lever. (Joystick is NFU and I prefer it to FFU). Stick with it. It will come to you. Oh. You do have RAI (Rudder Angle Indicator) don't you? That would suck without one. But I predict that soon, like me, you will wish all boats had joysticks. CUOTO

Love your videos Tim. I thoroughly enjoy watching and learning from professionals handeling boats in close quarters. I've ocasionally watched and listen in to a pair of tugs guiding bulk carriers into the turning basin in our local harbour. They'll turn the ships through 270 degrees and slide it accross to its berth in the minimum of time with a minimum number of 2 or 3 word directions from the pilot on the ship and read back from the tugs. No stress, no urjency, just calm and precise. Poetry in motion. Anyway, thanks.

You make it look so easy, Captain Tim! I will say though, I think some of the advice on boat handling might be rubbing off! I was able to bring my folks' pontoon boat alongside the dock this summer without once having to back up and take a second try at it, which is a new record for me! lol All that stuff about paying attention to stuff like flags, how other boats are lying in the wind/current, and using your boat's characteristics to your advantage really does make a difference! Of course an 18' pontoon boat is not REMOTELY the same as wrangling a several-thousand-ton tug and barge, but hey, I was able to impress my mom with my boat handling skills, and that's more than good enough for me!

The engineer in me wants to design an electric thruster system for those barges, and a standardized harness to connect to the tugs, so the captains could actually get the barge to participate in maneuvers instead of these counter-intuitive rudder and engine settings you have to use now. Of course I'm sure somebody has already proposed something like that and had it shot down as costing more couch money than the oil company is willing to invest...
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. There are other fleets in other ports that have thrusters (although not electrical). We would love to have them. But as you point out, it all comes down to cost. Other ports that don't have the amount of tugs available to assist, find the added expense of a thruster to be worthwhile. CUOTO

@0:17 - That flashlight looks like one of the Streamlight explosion-proof, intrinsically safe flashlights. I used to carry these with me when I entered mines and when I worked on fuel islands. Anything below 18" on a fueling rack or forecourt requires intrinsic safety. The whole (explosion-proof) business is something else. I'm guessing that flashlight also floats by nature of it being explosion-proof.

Hey Captain Tim I just found your channel I love your videos. Though I’m one video you said that in the steering you said it’s actually not port or starboard only in holly wood. I have to correct you on that. On the big ships and on the navy ships being a former naval sailor for Canadian Navy. Also being a deckhand on one summer on the BC ferries before I joined the Reg force. We always said back to the captain in the navy and on the ferries we had to repeat back there commands. Port 5 to port 30 and to starboard 5 starboard 30. Mid ships. Or hard port or hard starboard. So no it’s not in holly wood. Hate to correct you on that. 20 years in the navy. However now I’m on welland canal I see the 2 wheel house tugs all the time. Very interesting. I always thought there were 2 of you in the wheel house you barking the commands and a helmsman so you can concentrate on the crew and on the load not doing all of it. That’s awesome how you operate it.

NYC a good location to not have the potential to deal with Lee. But Lee is headed that way. Noticed you mentioned towing lights but not day shapes. Great description of the controls. Looks like a pretty day in NYC. Nice that you mentioned the stuff you line up with (a mast and a house a few miles away, some rungs on a ladder, etc...)

Thank you for watching Wayne. Both are great for very different reasons. I like coming back to NYC and hearing my friends and old shipmates on the radio. VTS NY has been very good to me. So I like coming back and getting in the action every once in a while. But at my age and at my career point, Puerto Rico is hard to beat. The short answer would be "I am blessed to be able to work in either place". CUOTO

Been a long time since I've seen Tim B slide into my home port in New Haven CT, or my other favorite Bridgeport Harbor. I will be waiting for those videos, I can't wait. I love the content Tim, no matter NYC, NJ, CT, Long Island Sound, or all of your newer content from lovely Puerto Rico. I am fairly familiar with most of the CT coast in the LI Sound, so it is great to see content in this area, but it is also riveting to see the same type of jobs going in in other parts of the world.
