1. You do not know that. 2. I think it could be called for in certain circumstances. We have only one highly distorted account here and I am not rushing to judgement. This says more about the one recording and posting it than anyone else. 3. Who exactly are you and why did you need to create a brand-new account today? Are you 6 and this is your first account at Google, Andy Jones? Please explain.

I don't know what happened, but it's fairly clear (both logically and audio-wise) that the clip is by no means a full recording of the conversation (argument?). Before making any judgments, it would be good to know what occurred in the entire conversation.

I was wondering: Has anybody ever grabbed an eyepiece and taken a look through one of the VLT scopes? Well obviously this can't happen during normal operations, but surely there have been downtimes were one could have arrange to peek through an eyepiece for an quarter hour? Or e.g. when the telescope got installed?

I'm sure if you put a bunch of astronomers in a room, and gave them a couple of eyepieces and the task of coming up with a suitable target for viewing with an 8.2 meter telescope, they would find something that is pleasing *and* safe to view - lots of nice and faint nebula, star clusters and galaxies out there.

If you pointed the telescope at the sun, yes. If you pointed the telescope at the Moon, perhaps. If you pointed it at the third most luminous object in the sky, Venus, no. You would most likely not see anything other than the blurry contour of an unfocused light source. The concentrated light beam needs to be corrected in order for our eyes to see a focused image of the object targeted. This is why you need an eyepiece with your telescope in order to see anything at all.
@oldi18411 жыл бұрын
VST - very small telescope? :)

Europeans looove to talk about the VLT, especially the ESA videos. Which is understandable to a point, but especially ESA takes great pains to pretend the Keck telescopes do not exist, which is a bit annoying.

In fact the heaviest & largest astronomical instruments & their cryogenic cooling units can be placed in a Coudé room. Not applicable for the 8,20 m VLT but the 39,0 m E-ELT will be able to carry 3 instruments on each Nasmyth focus and 2 instruments in a Coudé room! More observatories at the Flickr.com page of RefractorPhill :-D

there's quite a bit more info on the Facebook forum where the clip was posted... facebook(dot com)/groups/190572828397/permalink/10151935290713398/ Brady was responding to an email the editor guy had sent him by verballly tearing it (and him) to pieces

I too, will see how this develops, but for now I can't support Brady in any way.

As there is some discussion here, I thought I chime in with some friendly advise: - People who don't know how to decently act as an employer/boss (and people who do neither know how to decently treat a fellow human being) should not lecture other people on socially awkward behaviour - Not everybody is Australian, and not everybody wants to be treated as an fellow Aussie - What some Aussies might deem acceptable behaviour is actually *nothing* of the sort, anywhere, to anybody nor at any time

The moon seen through an eight inch amateur telescope is going to be very bright, almost unpleasantly bright. Now imagine an 8.2 meter telescope with almost 1700 times the light gathering capacity. I'm no expert, but it would surprise me if it wouldn't permanently damage your vision!

As previously stated, I don't think there's enough information to conclude that "Brady is a [...] bully". Perhaps Brady was saying that Slater didn't appear to have any experience and didn't know how to act in a relationship. I DON'T KNOW. There really isn't enough information, and what information there is is FILTERED and therefore almost useless in terms of drawing conclusions. Brady was angry and mean; more than that cannot be determined at this point.

I wouldn't be too quick to judge. At this point, if I had to pick sides between someone who has provided me with hundreds of intelligent & entertaining videos, and someone who records a private conversation without consent AND publishes a ridiculing edit of it on the web AND posts youtube comments in order to draw attention to it, I'll give Brady the benefit of doubt. If I were him, I wouldn't respond either - I would leave that to my attorney.

No, I know, you're right. I don't know the whole picture. But even completely out of context, you can't say that it's ever okay to be debasing somebody to that degree. Did you hear that whole thing? He sounds like a seasoned bully. "Have you ever had a girlfriend?" And all the pompous laughing at him. All of that is completely out of line in any context. Even out of context, I really think Brady has serious problems. What do you think?
@uriituw11 жыл бұрын
I heard the audio. Who cares? So people get into disagreements from time to time. Some emails were mentioned. Perhaps, it would be worth hearing both sides, before any speculation and getting angry at him.
@NthPortal11 жыл бұрын
Given that you don't know what actually happened (because the person posting, rather dishonestly, left out all context), you shouldn't make judgments. I'm actually leaning to assuming that the one who posted it is bad, because he's deliberately covering up details. Also, assuming that Brady's behavior is caused by inherent (if, supposedly, from his childhood) character defects, rather than being a response to a *specific* situation, is the Correspondence Bias (aka fundamental attribution error).
@satladaltas11 жыл бұрын
:-( Brady needs a lot therapy. That kind of stuff doesn't just come out of nowhere; There's a sad history there probably going back to his parents treating him like he was worthless.
@NthPortal11 жыл бұрын
1) Not what I meant by filtered: lesswrong(dot)com/lw/jt/what_evidence_filtered_evidence/ 2) I'm not sure pompous fits. 3) Patronizing is probably a subset of mean. 4) Yes, it's sexist, but not uncommonly so. Alternatively, it may be more a way of undermining masculinity than sexism; I don't know. 5) The fact that it clearly was not the entire conversation is evidence of the fact that Slater would not look as good if the whole conversation got out; it indicates he may be more in the wrong.

How bad? Yeah, unclear, but it's apparent that Brady is a capable and willing bully when he brings up relationships just to come down on him, and the thing about the money. Brady can avoid this by hiring editors with stronger personalities. But I'd prefer he'd just not be a bully so that next time he's looking at us through the camera, I don't have to think about how low his standards are for other people's sense of well-being. I'm really disenchanted by it.
@Tupster11 жыл бұрын
We have no idea what the other person said or how they have interacted in the past. I doubt you really believe that you cannot respond with verbal attacks to somebody who has been verbally attacking you. You may believe that for yourself, but no way should everybody be held to such high standards of sainthood. If you say something nasty to me I'm going to come back with something that makes you regret it. But honestly, I don't want to hear either side of this story, lol

To hang such laundry out instead of putting it in the dryer where it belongs is a very low-class thing to do and tells me all I need to know about that person. Pathetic. I don't think that categories like "good" or "bad" are really helpful here. Maybe Stephen is slow, that doesn't justify this kind of language and personal insults. Maybe Brady abused some kind of power divide, that doesn't justify uploading this clip without permission. Not speaking up doesn't help Brady's position at this point though.

I would at least add pompous, and patronizing to angry and mean. And he repeats "Girly whiny emails" twice which is sexist. I know what you're saying - this isn't proof. But examine the waveform in Audacity; Looks pretty clean. Having worked in the business, I know that videographers are often pretty egotistical and bullying is fairly common. This is actually a fairly likely scenario, sorry to say.
@ZiqqiPH11 жыл бұрын
If that audio is legit, I'm seriously disappointed in Brady. I have had huge admiration for Brady these last couple of years, but in that video he just sounded like a pretentious prick. I will, however, wait for new updates from both sides of the story. Perhaps this video isn't the place to have this discussion.
@satladaltas11 жыл бұрын
I don't see why you'd split hairs on pompous or patronizing. I realize some sexism is less damaging than others. No confusion there. I understand there are two sides to the story but the crux is that Brady's the one who I've come to admire. Being more or less in the wrong is meaningless when it comes to whether or not I can enjoy these videos now. Brady should just never stoop so low. You don't get excused for being less wrong. I don't believe in some sort of moral competition. Do you?
