The spin back kick won a fight for me back in college. I normally like closer in fighting but the guy was moving backwards quickly and there was no other technique that would've closed the gap so quickly. Hotton Sensei is a living treasure of old school karate.

He didn't block the back kick with his open hands as he knew one shouldn't block kicks with open hands due to high possibility of finger injuries. When the kick came, he backed off a bit and by that time the kick already missed the target. His open hands only served to spin the kicker toward him, an open target for his counter-attack moves.

very keyboardish mindset - if he did this, then this would happen. you try it and then say I tried and it sucked.
@CaffeAddict4 жыл бұрын
@ I did try it and it worked just like his. The thing is this hand sweep depends on the kick. Most people's back kick doesn't go straight out from their center but rather spin a little and that helps the sweep. A back kick coming on a straight line would be harder to be swept aside by hands.

What a great video for an often incorrectly formed technique. I like the defence too. I usually just move out slightly or move in as soon as the kicker starts the rotation but I'll give this a go as it has the natural counter. Thanks for making the video.

Just going point out one more technique that you could follow up with right after the deflect. As you parry the leg, it's going to cause your opponent to put weight on that very same leg because he/she is going to want to stop it from flailing too far off so that they can recover. That creates a very good opportunity to strike to roundhouse kick the inner thigh, which will then cause your opponent to break his balance, breaking the stance, leaving him/her vulnerable to a lot of follow ups at your mercy. I understand the concern with breaking your fingers when parrying such a powerful blow so try use it at your own peril when using this counter. I usually just prefer to rubberband back to allow the opponent to miss and then return with a high round kick to the head when they are attempting to recover. I suggest using the left roundhouse kick to the head since he/she will probably not see it coming if they throw the right spinning back kick. If they throw the left, throw the right roundhouse to the head instead. Reason for this is so that you don't accidentally grievously hurt your opponent by accidentally landing to the back (the mohawk area) of the head. I know it's allowed to kick to the side areas of the back of the head but unless you're damn precise with your kicks, avoid it during sparring.

Holy fucking shit, your speed and technique is phenomenal. Kudos man, you are one of those few instructors that actually train hard. Anyways, this is not that good of an option for back jock to the face, in which case you can't do this block for head defense....and its not possible to understand if this is gonna be a high kick or mid kick either when you first start seeing the kick coming either. So what I always do when I see a back kick coming is that I use my footwork, step back and outside of the kick and at the same time either do a low roundhouse to the the knee of the standing leg of the attacker or wait in position to do a straight cross punch to the face. Either that or I move inside of the kick and close to the attackers body and simply knee or front kick the attacker in the ass. Both of these techniques always work very very very good for me. I am a shotokan practitioner who spars full contact with muaythai fighters under mma rules and kicks some major ass. I am glad I found your channel. You have good skills and timing.

Your foot is striking like a Yoko Geri, too horizontal. With the Ushiro Geri, your foot needs to strike upside down in a near vertical fashion. That's what makes balancing yourself whilst performing the kick more difficult. It is like this in Wado Ryu anyway.
@mooseven9 жыл бұрын
I'm not a big fan of this technique as it seems to me that it relies on a very precise estimation of how long the other guy's leg is and how fast they can throw the kick. There's very little margin of error and if you get it wrong, you're directly in the path of the kick. Fine if you're training with a partner that you know, but with a new opponent, they may be faster, slower or longer-legged than you're used to or they might thrust their body in towards you as they kick, throwing off your timing. When defending from ushiro geri, my personal opinion is that it's much better to get off-line.
@jinkazama3609 жыл бұрын
Also this won't work for a head kick.

It works best when you stun you opponent first. but it is a high risk move. but it is also the most powerful kick you can make. high risk/high reward.
@Shinobi1Kenobi7 жыл бұрын
Shotokan doesn't do a lot of off-line. It's a very linear form of karate. So your criticisms are accurate, but the Shotokan karateka practices for the perfection of range and timing in a very similar way that western fencers do(except for the emphasis on power in Shotokan). IF they perform flawlessly, the techniques inspired by the strategy are effective against linear tactics. But they are highly vulnerable to circle-based counter-attacks if you keep in mind that they train to initiate attacks from longer range. They'll close to max striking/kicking distance VERY explosively. Similar to how TKD fighters behave with a reliance on striking instead of kicking. They tend to use kick, strike, strike combos with the strikes coming from basically the same stance they land following the kick. The TKD fighter is more likely to use kick, kick, kick or kick, kick, strike combos and (therefore) continue to move throughout the combo.
@Shinobi1Kenobi7 жыл бұрын
You can try it if you're very brave. The whole thing hinges upon getting out of range of the incoming kick. It's much easier and higher probability of success to get off-line of the attack and collapse the gap. "Best defense - no be there!"
@diosdadoapias7 жыл бұрын
they adapted the distancing in sword fighting that is why in their kumite their distance is that of two swords men on guard. In Okinawan kumite it is more closer as observable in Okinawa competition kumite.

Actually, the attack demonstrated is not a proper karate back kick. It is a turn kick, aka spinning side kick. The difference? Over rotation forces orientation of the kicking heel to horizontal instead of vertical. Very common mistake! A proper spin back kick requires only minimal rotation (mostly by rotating on the ball foot) to point the heel of the base leg toward the target. The kicking leg chambers and the kick is executed with the thighs brushing each other as the kicking leg extends into the kick. Throughout the kick, the kicking foot is oriented VERTICALLY with the heel pointing up. It is a defensive/counter kick. A good karateka would never initiate an attack by giving his back to his opponent. But it is the most powerful kick in karate when properly executed. Countering the turn kick (as seen in this video) is actually much safer and easier if get off-line and collapse the gap.

great kicking technique, great speed great kihon, bad defensive strategy. there's no way you'll be able to actually deflect a full power ushiro geri like that. works wonders for sparring during training because training is not full power, won't save you from that kick in a full contact fight or a brawl. against turning kicks, you either get out of the way by evading it or you go INSIDE and block the rotation before the kick comes out, deflecting a kick like that simply won't happen unless you're WAY BIGGER than the person throwing that kick.

those black belt guys are not stabil when kicking
@boek83286 жыл бұрын
100% stability also mean less power. 100% stability is ballet, not martial art. If you know you are actually hitting your opponent it makes no sense at all to keep 100% balance. When you know you get contact you want to move as much body mass as possible into the kick or punch, that mean losing some balance, if you don't do that you will never floor your opponent.
