@@discsmd I’m pretty plugged in and I don’t know of any coach that teaches “drop the knee” either. That just seems like another reductive statement. This thread is quickly turning into a perfect example of how political and tribalistic disc golf has gotten. The only chance you have to get someone out of their echo chamber is to send them outside of the sport. Otherwise they intentionally misrepresent anyone they were told to disagree with.

Too good. I've been focusing on standing backhand drives, I never knew about that aspect of the back leg. I plan to try it out this evening. This guy is now an Intermediate Patreon 👊 Proud to be supporting the OT fam.

I'm in the weight shift camp. Working with your video, when to step lead heel down. loading weight on back leg till hip locks, goes from up to down, heel down then shifting weight forward without pushing off back leg.

Pushing with the back leg fixed my foot work, reduced hip pain (as opposed to letting the back leg just drag behind) and finally got me consistently over 500' with minimal upper body effort. Just a quick push, no twisting or squishing. I was stuck at 450' for a couple of years because of KZbin coaches teaching to just run agaist the brace, as in this video. I recommend watching Nick Krush's videos on brace.

Very helpful and insightful content as always! I focused on not pushing off my back leg in my latest fieldwork session, and found that it really helps me get a consistent plant with my front leg (resulting in more consistent power). It helps so much with overall timing as well. Thank you!

I love that you mentioned you shouldn't need to be pushing off the back leg on a run up. I think people are working way too hard when the momentum is already there for you. I also think the standing on one leg drill would help a lot of people. Reminds me of DG Spin Doctor's "Post Man Drill." Also very effective. Great stuff.

Good video. To add to the first question, it seems like McBeth kind of pushes from the back leg when going slowly instead of gliding. He seems to kind of slowly go through the x-step and end up in a position where he kind of balances on his back leg. He pushes off from it more like doing a standstill. So "it depends" is a good point, but I just wanted to throw this thought also in the air, where it seems to be used differently. I also might be wrong, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I understand what you’re saying but if a disc golf throw is in a lot of ways parallel to a baseball hitters swing, hitters definitely drive off the back leg. Can you imagine if they didn’t? All arm swings which would never get out of the infield. I understand they are in disc golf terminology effectively doing a stand still as you put in the category of when you do drive off the back leg, but I just don’t think the disc community as a whole has come to any coherent consensus on back leg drive. Yes in theory you’re getting all the momentum you need off the run up, but I would bet you ask 100 pros, particularly those that are not 6’5 who mostly don’t have to obey any of the rules of good form to throw far compared to us normal sized folks, and you’d get any of a handful of answers. “Do you drive off the back leg on distance shots?” “Not at all” … “a little” … “I don’t think about it” … and “definitely” I am however positive they don’t focus on how their leg swings or balances them, unless they’re sumo legging somehow, which they’re pros and don’t do that. They just stay in balance like a hockey player does the necessary things to stay on their skates and don’t think about how they do it.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 ай бұрын
I actually don’t think the disc golf throw is parallel to a baseball hitters swing all that much. The biggest differences being that baseball is generating power from a standstill versus walk up and that you swing a bat with both the lead and trail shoulders whereas we swing a disc only with the lead. Those two things alone create very different power generation options. There is approximately one other sport movement that uses the same setup; the one handed backhand in tennis which also uses the hips as a base (non power generator), leaving the power generation to the upper body, because the lead arm is in control of the racket. Federer had no issue with power generation.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 ай бұрын
A third thing to mention is that we are utilizing a closed stance whereas baseball uses a neutral stance so the function of the hips will undoubtedly differ

it's a bit weird how all coaches still accuse slingshot of teaching squish the bug. He did do it but corrected it a long time ago, the ¨squish the bug¨ movement slingshot does is only to show where you want to end up in a dynamic run up which is hard when you want to show a static position. Sometimes I think slingshot ends up with the same idea as everyone else but he teaches it in a different way. It does not help when he tries to patent everything and sound like a salesman in every video saying stuff like ¨no coach is teaching this, just me¨ and it ends up being the same shit in a different way. You can't deny his students developing 500+ feet drives though so he is certainly doing alot of things right.

Players talk about getting your hips into the drive, could it be that the back leg turns as a result of those driving with your hips? For instance Albert Tamm drive from gkpro. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnrViJqifpmKh7csi=UJ-z5HFHXxGd4Q2n&t=31
