@@OverthrowDiscGolfHe doesn’t really want to keep the new swing though, he just admitted he’s struggling with finding the correct timing with his old form on a podcast (Nick and Matt I believe). Active use of the off arm both encourages coiling, but also when fired first slingshots / accelerates the throwing arm into the power pocket with minimal engagement of the muscles in the throwing arm. In the power pocket the muscles of the throwing arm are then fully engaged and can accelerate the disc from its already higher speed from the slingshot effect. The hips then push forward towards the target creating rapid rotation which then eventually will drag the trailing arm into the “follow through” after the disc has been released. Paul also stated his new form “…looks awkward and IS awkward.” Ultimately though my point is not about Paul, I just in good faith believe you have a minor misunderstanding regarding what is actually happening mechanically. But we can agree to disagree!

great video, looking forward to your next follow through video. My follow through is shit and I think it's hurting my right hand side lower back on RHBH drive. I'm going to be doing more yoga and core work to help strengthen that area in hopes it helps with reducing injury. but, regardless of strength level I believe it's my follow through (or lack of follow through) that's hurting me. Honestly this is the number one reason I'm considering joining your patreon for a lesson.

I like that you referred to the off arm as a 'timing piece'; it definitely looks like the pros initiate the swing with the off side, but the front side takes over while the off side stops or reverses, kind of like a newton's cradle. i appreciate the way you've been able to enhance and better inform your position on this apparently still controversial part of the disc golf swing.

The slomo makes it look like Drew's getting to left pec @ 8:00 when the disc starts ejecting from his body. It doesn't seem like that's the "deep pocket" left pec position that's mentioned earlier @ 6:10 unless I'm missing something. Thoughts?
@connerwallace4997
@connerwallace4997 Жыл бұрын
I agree Drew does not enter the deep pocket which the disc along his right (our left) pec. This seems to be caused by a difference in timing from overthrow's recommendations. Drew has the left arm move and begin to stop before the right arm starts moving. This causes his shoulders to be ahead of his right arm when throwing. It is possible that pull his right arm so fast that the timing difference is correct for him or he could gain additional distance with different timing. Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to know which is the case.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf Жыл бұрын
Deep pocket is between mid chest and right pec. You try to get to right pec and the disc will probably move out a bit earlier than that. Plenty of slow mo of Wiggins getting there. Drew has his hand more towards 9:00 on the disc causing it to be further back than Simon’s who has the hand around 8:00. Another way of saying deep pocket is that the elbow goes past the frame of the body where the shoulder to upper arm angle is clearly greater than 90 degrees. Most amateurs keep it on their trail side. Move it past the trail side is the tldr

From a physics perspective, I'm convinced that the back arm is a way of manipulating moment of inertia to increase rotational speed. The disc golf swing is, from a physics perspective, two things. It's using your body (upper and lower) to create rotational velocity around a point, and then using your arm as a slingshot to convert that rotational velocity to linear velocity. Starting with an arm farther out and bringing it tight, much like a figure skater, creates that extra rotational speed, which you can impart on the disc through the hit through whipping action in the right arm. It didn't help me figure out the fine points of form, but it made me realize where distance comes from, from a physics perspective. And the opening of the left arm, to some extent, and the end of the follow through, is again manipulating moment of inertia so that it's easier to slow down your body.

Why use side view to show the (lack of) rotation when you have a top view available? Simon's max flat has rotation in every frame. Does not mean off arm is driving it though. Rotation (or maybe rather twist) comes from the oblique slings, like in most powerful movements. Movement of the left arm is to create tension, not rotation. Doing it before the start of the throw, creates a stretch reflex which is then timed with the throw to add power.

A useful experiment might be saran wrapping your trailing arm to your side straight down and see what happens. Although it is tucked in perfectly, the whole benefit of that arm movement is adding a small amount of weight into the forward momentum, at JUST THE RIGHT TIME to contribute to the throw. My arm weighs about 5.5 pounds sitting on a digital scale. If I get the timing right, I'm adding 5.5 pounds of momentum to my throw, if I almost get it right it just cancels out and balances, if I get it wrong, it subtracts 5.5 pounds from my momentum. Another experiment could be adding weight to your trailing arm, either lower or upper and see if it can add some momentum if you get the timing right. Tucking it in at various speeds can effect the effective weight of the arm, mass increases with speed. Fast tuck at just the right timing could add a lot to the throw potentially.
@michaelcushman

Brilliant! I have tried a weight in the off hand. I wondered if a few pounds would be ideal. Would it be a secret weapon? I found that the best solution is a weight equal to the disc is actually best. 172g. The symmetry is what's most important! I never tried it in competition. Maybe I'll revisit this. Your comment inspires me.

Could you elaborate a bit on your way of teaching the backhand vs for instance this guy www.youtube.com/@slingshotdiscgolf1897. It seems like you have quite opposite philosophies when it comes to the backhand and specifically the role of the off arm. You both seem to get quite the distance on your throws though. Does anyone have data that shows the minimum arm speed for each disc speed? There has to be a minimum average required to throw a 5 speed, as well as a minimum average arm speed to throw a 14 speed. Having a decent number average relative to arm speed in mph/kph, would help in so many ways. I do understand it's mostly about technique, but knowing and understanding the required arm speed would be a great help in training and increasing arm speed. Would give beginners and intermediates a datum to measure from to meet a goal. Can you guys do an experiment using TechDisc, to see if a basic information table can be created? Thanks for reading

Great video as always. Every video gives me important things to think about. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. The slow-mo footage disagrees with other descriptions of off-arm timing you have made. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHW7dYiCf6uIhrM here you talk about how the off-arm is coming in to speed up rotation in the same way a figure skater bringing the arms in speeds up rotation, in technical terms due to the preservation of angular momentum. This only works if you are already rotating when you bring your arms in. But as shown in both of the forms you reviewed the left arm had stopped as the shoulders began rotating. This might be a difference in definitions but I believe that the left arm here is driving shoulder rotation. As you point out in the video the right shoulder is stationary, thus you can think about it as the fulcrum around which the body is rotating, at 11:55 you mention a push back as part of the follow through which should increase this effect. In that case, stopping the left arm is causing the right shoulder to push forward. Further evidence to this point is that the left shoulder does move, it is just stopped like the rest of the left arm. I think that this is much like the handle of a whip; where stopping the handle is what initiates the whip cracking. Overall I think the advice you give is correct. Having the left arm stop and the left shoulder remain in place seems to be very important. But I think that the bio-mechanical explanation of why that is wrong and leads to a small difference in the pro's form where the left arm starts coming in before any other part of the throw and your advice of having both arms come in at the same time. I suspect that this might be why the slow-mo drill you demonstrate "feels robotic".

I see this talked about all over youtube and the only reasons that I have heard so far is it's for driving rotation (I don't buy that) and to make you rotate faster (like a figure skater), but I'm not so sure about that either.

It doesn't help me coiI or uncoil but at the end it gives a little push when throw initiates. But my question is, is it ok that it's pretty tucked to the side? It looks kinda weird tbh because most players do something with their off arm and mine just stays close to the side little bit bent.

I think it helps me come through with my left hip and I also think it helps me tense a bunch of muscles in the left side of my torso. @@OverthrowDiscGolf I just went back and skimmed through. She was talking about getting the hips more engaged, not off arm. I remembered wrong. 😳 She does talk about off arm timing, but it's more like what you talk about.

I saw that Robbie C's Coach mentioned that it's two motions. Kind of a punch down and then the swing out. Look like the intention of that was to close the coil at the shoulders and then open it up. Or did I misinterpret that sequence in one of his videos?

I don’t know which video that’s from so take this with a gargantuan grain of salt, but punch down and swing back doesn’t seem like too bad of a cue

I mean, isn't bringing your off arm to your hip from full reach back pulling your shoulder back to a neutral position in line with your hips?

Sure, but that’s much different than driving the trail shoulder ahead of the hands

@@OverthrowDiscGolf okay. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. Seems to me like the faster I pin my elbow the faster my rotation is, and as long as that is slower than my lead arm, I'm in good shape. Is this a good line of thinking?

Great coaching Josh! Q: given the rear shoulder isn't moving much, where do you think the center of rotation is? If it was centered on the spine then we would see that rear shoulder moving camera-ward at least if not rotating forward around the spine, but it doesn't do that much as you demoed... Is the axis then more from the front hip socket TO the rear shoulder socket??

I’m gonna be honest, that’s something I haven’t really studied. I keep meaning to get into the whole spine tilt topic with AceIt and Seabas22 to unpackage it more.

@@OverthrowDiscGolf I mean who has studied it? Waiting on data from Chris… but they may not look at that issue. I chatted with Andrew about it a bit, we seem to have some fundamental differences in our models of rotation that I have not sorted out yet… curious what John thinks!

The off arm when in position will naturally do the swim move. There isnt really a need to actively try and do it.

If I didn’t have a background teaching the one handed backhand in tennis I would agree in most cases. I do think some people will have to actively work on it though.

@OverthrowDiscGolf i think its a force applied action and reaction. If you dont have some things driving the kinetics chain properly, then it wont naturally resist the rotation.

@@sarinhighwind I can see that. In tennis we taught the off arm going back. I guess we backed into the chain there

I watch three instructors and Josh is amazing ! I’m 57 and in three months time of field work I’ve finally reached 400+ and the more lose my arm comes through the easier it feels I had to put a tight rubber glove on because the rips that I get hurt my fingers. The looser the body the better. Picture someone has put a numbing shot in your arm and you pull through tight to the body. Everything else is just a rope snapping. But is so easy to throw far now.

Uh.. the shoulder not driving rotation isn’t proven by showing the shoulder not moving right to left. It’s rotation. The shoulder is turned and is coming forward toward the camera as rotation happens. Not one of the best points to make.
