Back on my own cruising the canals | Solo female Boating [Ep 107]

This week I leave Norbury behind and say goodbye to my good friend Nikki - a fellow solo female boater. I continue my narrowboat adventure up the Shropshire Union Canal towards Brewood. It's my first time cruising solo and not in convoy with fellow boaters in a long while and it was a lovely cruise on my narrowboat through the beautiful English countryside.

Hey Heidi, Absolutely have loved your vlogs. My 95 year old father and I have just finished watching them all over the past couple of weeks, and now will have to wait until next week for the new episode, But it will be worth it. Used to be a family holiday on the canals, when I were a lad, and thoroughly enjoyed them. So sorry when Pudding passed away last year but he had a good life by the looks and sound of it, and fingers crossed that you get a rescue dog to cause chaos in The Pirate Boat. I am looking when I retire to either liveaboard or live full time in a campervan, can't make my mind up. Anyway before I write an essay, thank you for the time you spend making these vlogs and the smile it puts on all our faces. Safe travels and look forward to next week now, will seem so strange not watching a few episodes tomorrow lol x

Our long time favourite spirit tipple has been Rum and Shrub (Shrub being an alcoholic cordial that used to be made by Phillips of Bristol). Shrub was discontinued a couple of years ago and our stocks have dwindled to nothing. We have been searching for a replacement mixer for our dark rum. Now - with your suggestion of Ginger Wine - we have a suitable replacement - thank you. Enjoying a glass now aboard no Ripple Effect. Thank you Heidi.

Usually with starter motors that become intermittent its the carbon bushes have worn down or the holders are dirty and stop the spring from pushing the bushes hard onto the commutator( the round copper thing with segments). You can unclip the spring ,slide out the brushes clean the holders with some scotchbrite and clean the commutator so its copper is bright and shiny. Most times this is a fix hitting it with a hammer shocks the brushholder and the spring pushes abit harder bit cleaning it is a better more permanent repair. Love your channel thanks Heidi.

If you can, consider arranging to live on the waterways for a year or so. That way you will get to experience most (if not all) of life on the waterways, good AND bad. Then you can make a more informed decision. It could cost a bit to do so, but it could save you a lot more if you end up finding that waterborne life is not for you.

That starter motor has probably just got some mucky contacts, oooerr. If you disconnect your starter battery, unbolt the leads and the holding nuts and whip it out (This isn't getting any better) you could probably solve it by emptying a can of contact cleaner through the vents and letting it drip dry 😳 Grand video as ever Heidi.

Hello Again Heidi - I was pleased to hear you play your cornet....I too used to play trumpet and cornet in brass and dance bands, But it's now a problem due to a mouthful of seriously ageing teeth. We used to say (in our youth) "Old trumpeters never die - the music just fades away!" I think mine has done just that. I can still play the piano and keyboard though. Peter Pavely Kent . Hello Heidi. Reference your dodgy starter motor. The carbon brushes in the motor are mounted on springs to push them in touch with the copper commutator that are linked to the electrical windings of the motor to create a rotating force. If these carbon brushes are very worn so reduced in size, there is not enough force left from the springs to push the carbon brushes in contact with the copper, and they get stuck probably due to the engine vibration. . . Hence the temporary fix with your hammer. . . You may be able to get a mechanic to replace the spring loaded carbon brushes, otherwise then you are stuck with having to buy a new starter motor and it's installation.

I love a whiskey mac, myself. Stones used to sponsor my old Squadron in the Royal Australian Air Force, we used to get pallet loads of it delivered to us every couple of months. :). Any motor mechanic could refurbish your starter motor, just call in to the local mechanics garage and have a chat with them.

Good afternoon Heidi. Re: Starter motor. No action when you touch the key, versus normal operation after a wee tap, makes it very likely the problem with you starter motor is worn/sticking brushes. A cheap to source and easy to change part. (There will certainly be youtube videos on how to do so :) ) Apologies if this is already known or previously mentioned... I am watching from an FPSO just off Angola so I don't manage to catch every episode and hardly ever on time :D

How do you start a pirate ship? you need a hammer, and some rum to sip. You wack it off, not once but twice, and hit it hard, that feels quite nice. And when it starts, turn off the lights, for when it's dark, it's the pirate's life. Arrrrrr

Hello Heidi. Your videos gives me a lot of nostalgia. Me and five other friends did the Cheshire Ring in 1991. We all came from Sweden so keeping to the right was natural for us. Not so much Mrs Smith when hubby was down below. Manchester was perhaps not showing it`s best from the canalside 32 years ago. But the rest of the trip was unforgettable. 91 or 92 locks in seven days was a blast or perhaps not so much. Building caracter if nothing else. But with six people onboard, two shipmates with experience of Swedish canals (Strömsholms canal, Hjälmare canal) wich is much wider and with the water comming from the top. It was a lot easier for us (+20 years old). So my deepest respect for what you are doing. By the way RUM is the nectar of gods and Pirates. AAAAARR!!

Heidi please be very careful with the Gas change over with the Gas fittings all was spray some soapy water on the fittings and look for bubbles if none leave the hatch open for a couple of minutes if you can 😅 so no Gas fumes and you will grow old a lot longer ,,,,,,, safety first love your vids. I had a car that had a dodgy starter motor for two years. It was an old rusty Rover so it wasn't worth fixing. I used to get strangers from the street to turn the key while I hammered the starter motor. The Rum Rum wonderful rum ditty I put on the comments of one of your earlier videos was written by me to encourage you to use your best sea shanty voice. It was written to go with the tune for Mud mud glorious mud.

Stage 1: sometimes it starts normally and then sometimes you have to hit it with a hammer. Stage 2: it will now ONLY start once you’ve hit it with the hammer. [As you mentioned, this can sometimes work effectively for months] Stage 3: Now, t will sometimes start and sometimes not start using the “hammer trick”. Finally, one day, it just won’t start at all. No matter how much you hammer it, or whereabouts you hammer it 😳 I distinctly remember that feeling, not wanting to turn the motor off, leaving it running just in case. I’m glad you’re able to get it sorted out. 👍🏽 🙂🐿🌈❤️

Hi Heidi, another great video. I have a lot to thank you for. Watching your travels and getting to see the beauty of the canals, has inspired me to volunteer for the canal and river trust here in Nottingham. I had my first taster session this week, and now I'm all signed up. Im working on planned preventative maintenance, greasing and maintaining the lock gates, and paddles. I really enjoyed it. That starter has a dead field, you need a new one. By the looks of it, it looks like an MG starter/generator. I could be wrong though. Narrowboats are way cool, but, I like my RV better because I can find a very secluded place to get naked.

Hi de Heidi. Sounds like you have a sticking Bendix or your brushes have worn too much. Having owned so many old cars, the gear gets a bit worn and sticks in place rather than springing into position when the motor is turned. A gentle tap releases the gear until next time. Not so long ago every town would have a motor factors or an electrical shop where you could get the motor refurbished, and the older motors could be serviced yourself, like changing the brushes. Life's a bit different for me, I'm on a 35' yacht in the Mediterranean, just a tad warmer, and the water isn't brown, but I do like to see the English countryside so carry on exploring and maybe one day we can have a Carajillo in the sun.

The diesel on sale at Wheaton Aston used to be the cheapest in the area, I once towed a 70dft boat for about 12 miles, with a 30ft 2cylinder boat, took ages but they were out of fuel, so what could I do?

I have been watching your escapades now for a couple of weeks and thoroughly enjoying them, thank you. I live in Columbia Tennessee and I have to admit I miss the ocean. I grew up in Dublin Ireland then moved to California. We, my Wife and I, had a couple of boats ( Catalina 36 and a Californian 42) which we had a ton of fun on. But I have to say that your lifestyle has got my attention, I am retiring from my very busy racing career in December this year and We my have to look into what you do. I will stay in touch so that if we actually get a narrow boat we can compare notes. Remember there are only two letters in the Pirate alphabet, Arrrrr and Iiiiiii. Cruise on my lovely.

@@TheNarrowboatPirate no probs… there are many potential hazards on a narrowboat especially if you have Gas and a wood burner,it only takes one mistake and it could lead to a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Living alone as I do as well I have to double check “everything” especially when leaving boat to shop etc. better to be safe than sorry… 👍🏻

So busy with the garden and my little boat almost missed you! If we didn't work a job we would have to be hunter-gathers and that would be a lot harder. They do make gas regulators that connect to two bottles and when one goes empty it switching automatically. They come with a little bulb to tell you when the primary one is empty. sounds like your starter dogs on your starter motor are sticking it may just be a quick case of taking your starter motor out and giving them an inspection and clean , and while it is out you need to check your starter ring on the fly wheel for damage which you can do yourself, just message me for instructions.

in 1991 the Anderton lift was in ruins but was in the progress of restuarition. I believe it´s completely restored now. Back in the days the girls on the 64 foot or 22 meter narrowboat couldn´t be served a full pint it was okay with two half pints, strange. The crew was three boys and three girls. In Macclesfied we got to close to the side of the canal between two locks so we got stranded. Took hours for the maintencens man to find us ´cause our english wasn´t to good. Lots of mud in the cooling system when we tried to break free. Next thing was a viaduct high up in the air and a veeryy looong tunnel.
