The general advice of spraying WD40 into the back-door latch mechanism might work, but you may need to go one step further. For my Mom’s Honda Fit (2015) it was necessary to spay WD40 into the latch mechanism, close the door, and then lock and unlock the door multiple times. I then sprayed more into the latch and repeated the process. For good measure I did this one more time.
This seems to have solved the problem of the rear hatch sticking in my Mom’s 2015 Honda Fit. My guess is that this would also work for other more recent Honda Fit’s. If the latch continues to have problem it may be that the latch mechanism is jammed or broken and that would require more involved repairs and possibly a visit to the dealer.

As many have noted, WD40 isn't a lubricant. I'm guessing that there may have been something that the WD40 dissolved to make the latch work. Three years later she hasn't had problems the hatch. Update 9/2022: after four years the problem came back. I sprayed a bit of WD40 to dissolve any gunk, waited a few hours, and then sprayed some Silicone lubricant (Blaster brand) on the lock. Works perfectly now.

Good thing i read these comments. I was going to buy a can of WD40 but will get a can of Silicone lubricant now. I have the same problem with my 09 Fit that uses the key to unlock the trunk, no fob.

@@ital2525 Yeah, the WD40 worked well the first time for about three years before it started sticking occasionally. I then used the Silicon lubricant seems to work fine as well.

Thanks! Worked for my 2016 CR-V. Maybe because I tried this WD40 suggestion early after just 2 situations of door not being immediately cooperative, I was still able to massage the little pad mechanism and get it open again without taking door apart from inside. Appreciate your sharing this!

Worked on my 2019 Fit that had developped intermittant problem right after the 3 year warrantee period.. The hatch would unlock but would not release all the way. Probably some moisture freezing after the last car wash. I only had to repeat a few times and it worked. Thanks.

I pulled the latch cover off in the bottom, centre back of the tailgate by climbing in through the back seat. I couldn't really find the latch I was meant to move, but I jiggled around the screwdriver and this seemed enough to loosen the latch. When I opened the hatch from the outside, I sprayed WD40 on the mechanism. Fingers crossed that it continues to work. Thanks for the video.

Tried this and it was a temporary fix. Two weeks later same problem. Honda said replace the lock. I did, $275. A week later same problem. Their trial and erorr approach was to try replacing the latching mechanism, or maybe even the FOB. It would end up costing $700.

Wow, that's some money for something that should work. I used some silicon based lubricant about a month ago since it was starting to stick again and that seemed to help get it back to normal. I think the WD40 dissolves some of the junk and the silicon lubricant helps the latch move easier.

@@847MicRoss on the white plastic sheathing that flanks the striker pin you will find a tiny trap door on top of the passenger side. open that little door and you can push the latch back from the striker pin with a small screwdriver.

The WD-40 is degreasing the gunk, not lubricating it.....I'd use WD-40 then use tri-flow or something similar

It's just "WD40", not 10WD40. You're confusing it with motor oil.

Lock your car. Lean in on the trunk and press the handle back to it's normal resting position and hold it. Hit the unlock button. You should hear a noticeable click. I hope that helps.... it may take 2 or 3 tries but that usually does it for me.

@DrBs-Other-Channel
@DrBs-Other-Channel 9 ай бұрын
For my mom's car I pushed it in and out, pulled the handle a bunch, and it eventually opened. Another option would be to do that while someone does the same sort of push back in forth from the inside. But if it absolutely won't open you're stuck living with it or going to a mechanic. If you get it open make sure to read the pinned comment for the video.

@wbreslyn
@wbreslyn Жыл бұрын
That was the original problem. It would take a good bit of trying to shake the rear door back and forth for it to finally open for me to deal with. Pushing the door in will trying to open, side to side, etc. Or having someone push from the inside while you try to open it. Perhaps try on a colder day as well. Hope that helps!
