Went right to the exterior handle hinges and above the handle lubrication with an anti rust lube spray and worked it in until the handle moved easier. Then it unlocked and locked properly again. Didn’t have to take anything apart on the inside. Great video!

This video helped get my daughters van going again. The tailgate had been a minor problem on it for awhile, but more than a minor inconvenience… On our 2006 Odyssey Touring this was also causing a .5-.6 amp parasitic draw that was killing our battery! A lot of other videos and threads instructed that it “must be a problem with the sliding doors… must tear those apart…etc”. My regular mechanic didn’t want to touch it at all… so I got out my Klein Tools clamp meter and started troubleshooting. In our case turns out it had nothing to do with “sliding doors” at all. It was this “handle problem” that was causing the computer to think the tailgate was open. We would get an alarm that the tailgate was not closed, and we would latch it manually. … but the half amp draw persisted even after the manual latch. No warning or light on the dash either. The tailgate seemed latched… Once I cleaned out and got the handle working again with WD-40 and a chaser of white lithium grease… all latching problems are cured… and parasitic power draw is fixed too. Yeeesss! We still see the half amp draw when the tailgate is open… but that may be normal? Either way we are way better off now. No more dead batteries. Thank you!

I'm so glad the video helped you. Helped in a way I didn't think it would! Interesting about the .5 amp parasitic draw. Thanks for the comment!

@@JonMorganMadness Open question: I am curious if anyone knows if that half amp draw when the tailgate is open… is normal? I tried to be detailed in my original comment in case it can be helpful to others. Thanks again.

Like wise I used silicon spray on the handle and it does a lot better now. But if I really pull on the handle it still gets stuck which I assume is because their is quite a bit of rust in that handle bar area on my 2006 odyssey.

Well, I know this took you some time to study and figure out, but THANK YOU for saving me an hour or two of MY time. Your solution worked perfectly for me. Five minutes of WD-40 and working the handle back and forth did the trick.

We have a 2009, I watched a couple other youtube solutions and it was taken the whole back panel off and I am not a mechanic and didn't want to make the problem much worst then it was. So i tried your simple solution and pop the plate off and did the manual opening and check the cord and spring. Then instead of WD-40 i used a more industrial lubricate since i saw the message on the video that WD-40 would need to probably be applied again. I applied the lubricate on the handle in the locations you identified and also out the hooking lock area. Now it works perfect again. Thanks you saved me a trip to the mechanics and paying them to fix something that may not needed to replaced or fixed.

Worked for mine, nothing looked gummed up but dust certainly builds up around the mechanism. Seems to be more of a problem with the lock/unlock mechanism that disconnects the handle from the latch.

I have an 05 odyssey with a similar rear door issue. After getting a new battery,alternator and starter the rear door lock/latch problem went away on its own. That was 16 months ago, now the problem is back, i found that if the rear door was stuck in the locked position i can just start the van, and manually unlock the passenger front door. This manual unlocking also unlocks the rear lift door at the same time. That leads me to think that not enough power is getting to that rear door solenoid, my van is old and i just dont care that much so i havent looked any futher..

the latch has a plastic flipper that engages outer handle when unlocked.... if lock plunger fails,,, you can spin it with a philips head screwdriver from inside, (under that center cover directly inside from latch mechanism)

Nothing catching or no tension on the latch to open up my liftgate. 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette. The fob remote unlock all doors but the liftgate. It did unlock the liftgate in the past but not now.
@slimvice90028 ай бұрын
Update, the spring had rotted out so I have to remove the interior panel to pull the vertical link up to open the gate and link down to lock it. I believe the link should snap up and down without manually pull up to open and pull down to lock the liftgate. I just don't know what the spring would look like at full length. I'm still searching online for one.
