I'd never heard of this author before and I liked the story very much. The ending was a little underwhelming, though. I was hoping the protagonist would track the "womankin" back to her tribe's lair, where some great, climatic horror would ensue.

I think the ending has to do with the story being edited for a magazine. Usually magazines had a word limit and often severely reduced the ending of a story to fit within this limit. Probably Morris had a longer and better ending originally, but it was cut. It's a shame because I also found the ending too brief and it wouldn't have taken much to improve it.

Great story, Connor. I just love these “little people” stories. The bit about the woman having snake fangs reminded me of the snake dwarves from Robert E. Howard’s stories

So glad you shared this story. This one actually got me excited and nervous as you read it! The ending seems a bit incomplete, but you can gather what happened.

What a sinister little gem of a tale! Did a quick search and may own it in an Alfred Hitchcock anthology I've yet to read (it's languishing in storage).

I've heard the Alfred Hitchcock Anthologies had lots of little gems in them. I really liked the story, though it isnt perfect. There is something incredibly sinister and creepy about Bo. I cant quite put my finger on what it is though, but I think its the idea of this small and poisonous creature that is obsessed with someone and follows them. Its quite unnerving.

@TheEldritchArchives It may not be perfect but it is perfectly weird and enjoyable. Bo is at once charming and terrifying, and I agree, having a venomous creature like her in one's shadow would not always be pleasant but certainly it would be interesting. And quite possibly deadly.

what a comparison of the tame wife that marries grave as the ideal woman and the Bow(?) girl as a perpetually mysterious being which they often viewed indigenous people. The clear she's beautiful, but untrustworthy is such a colonial misunderstanding of how women would definitely choose their family over pale forgieners when it comes down to it. Just the grossness too about 15-16 being an ideal age uhhh

This story is interesting because it's seeping with the unspoken assumptions and views of men from that time period. For instance, Graves is lonely and I remember there is some discussion of him getting a pet for company (the narrator has a dog but no human partner remember). Graves eventually does find a "pet" when he captures Bo, and then later replaces that "pet" with a wife (so a wife is comparable to a pet on some level according to these men). I also seem to remember that the narrator, at the end of the story, pontificates about his dog and considers it simpler than a woman (although i'd need to check this). Women are seen as objects at every point in the story. Graves effectively orders his wife from overseas like an item - he has never met her before and doesnt see this as a problem (although this is really about the time period's societal norms). Bo is discarded when she doesnt fit in with Graves' plans even though he was the one who captured her against her will. And remember at first the narrator thinks Bo is literally an inanimate object. Part of the horror is that Bo is not an object and she has her revenge for being treated the way that she is. The men learn the hard way that women are not objects. I think the ending is quite telling of the men's attitudes though: when Bo is too difficult to deal with they simply kill her. Really it's quite a tragic story.

Wait wasn’t Gouverneur Morris that one American Founding Father that had a bunch of affairs?

I believe that the author of this story is the great-grandson of the exact person youre talking about, and was named after them. So that's why its the same name.
