Now, January 2023, seems to be a great time to go to Nikon Z system. There are more and more third party lenses now. Chinese ones, like Yongnuo, Viltrox and TTartisan have cheap autofocus Nikon Z primes. Japanese Tamron launched a zoom and Sigma is near to start with Nikon Z too. I have Sony APSC, but I put my hands on a Z50 and Z30 and the difference is shocking, the ergonomics, buttons and control placement, the feel of the cameras, the sturdy feel, etc. I think I will go with Nikon. Even now there are third party adapters for Nikon F, Canon EF, etc

Hi yes you are definitively right. I just put my hands on a Z6ii and I confirm your thoughts and feelings about the Z mount… But we also have the LUMIX S5ii which has much more powerful features and very very good ergonomics compared to Nikon and more over it gives access to Leica L lenses. I know they are expensive but on the second hand market one can find a used 24-90 at a reasonable price and also the complete series of 1.8 are very good and have all the same size. Well it’s time to decide!

I have quite a few older manual focus Nikon primes. Three great ones are: The 300mm f/4.5 IF ED Ais. This is not fast but small. Beautifully made and very good images. The 180mm ED f/2.8 Ais. Spectacular image quality and good speed. The 105 f2.5 which you mentioned. I have the last version of this before it went Ai. This version has more rounded aperture blades. Very good lens. I have others but Nikon excel at longer focal lengths compared to other makes. I would like to buy a newer Nikon camera and then I can adapt some of these autofocus lenses but not much in the way of good value second hand mirrorless Nikons at the moment. I have to buy a new camera so I'm looking at Lumix. I want good video capability as well.

@@DidierMOULINPhotography I tried an S5II yesterday. It's very good but much more expensive than an S1. The size of the S1 concerns me a bit and if you want VLog you have to buy an update but even then, it's still ridiculously cheap. One thing I love on the S1 models is that EVF. What I don't want is a Sony. I've had problems with them and my Sony is now totally broken. I have to buy a camera soon but I'm still not sure which one. An S1 would give me a camera for the moment at cheap price. Ideally I would like to go Nikon because apparently their adapter works really well with older mount autofocus lenses. I don't have any of those but I know many of them are great and a good buy second hand. The Zf is appearing second hand now. I though that was great. I tried one but I'm not sure about the retro style and ergonomics. Have you ever noticed any moire problems with the S1? I know you concentrate on photography but obviously you do youtube videos. The S1H has an AA filter so should not have moire problems but it is even bigger. I'm thinking to separate video and photography so I can have a much smaller photography camera. I don't like the idea of taking any of the S1 range out for landscapes for example and they wouldn't be discreet for any street photography. I don't think it will be too long before all the cameras have great autofocus and IBIS but it's still a bit limited if you are buying second hand.

Hi there! I have the same tamron 35 I use with a D4 , and found taking photos at a concert that the outer focus points (actually, every single focus point other than the center) would wildly miss focus , and the only reliable way to get good focus is to focus and recompose. Which is hard to do with moving people. Did you find that to be the case with you, too?
@DidierMOULINPhotography
@DidierMOULINPhotography Жыл бұрын
Hi Thanks for sharing your experience with the Tamron 35mm f/1.4 I personally don’t have the issue you are reporting Are your camera and lens firmwares up to date ? Did you check the micro AF tuning? Maybe a tap In can help to configure your AF. It’s a good subject and I should make a video on this lens for sure. I would like to compare it with the Nikon version which I don’t have. Following my humble experience, the most difficult lens is the 58mm f/1.4 Very very bad wide open in my case. But closed down to f/2.0 - 2.8 it’s very good I’m mad of these lenses that are not good wide open, reason why I tried Leica last year and I think I will end using the L mount for a certain type of photography

Hi. The Irix 15 2.4 for Nikon F is a great lens. I had it and used it with my Nikon Z cameras before selling it for the Nikon Z 14-30 F/4 (another great lens). However, I wish I kept the Irix as it is a really fun and easy-to-use lens. The IRIX has an infinity lock, EXIF data (aperture control via the camera) that lets you know for easy focusing. @@DidierMOULINPhotography yes the Irix works great with the FTZ I (version that I have ) and transmits the EXIF data. As for the Z wide angle lenses, I have the 14-30 F4. The 14-30 F4 is a great lens that is small and lightweight for what it does. I got the 14-30 F4 used at a great priced from MPB. Second hand Nikons would be great except for the fact that Nikon have been years behind with mirrorless so second hand options are not great. @@DidierMOULINPhotography Apparently the eye detection autofocus feature on the Zf does not work with manual lenses that have no digital contact. Some people have found that using an adapter with electronic contact but non electronic lens attached causes the eye detection to work but then stabilization is not working. It doesn't work with Nikon's own adapter either. It will work with a newer manual lens like say a Voigtlander which has electronic communication. The manual Zeiss Classic versions with electronic contacts should also cause it to work. I have one of those but this kind of kills the usefulness of that feature for old vintage lenses.

How do you think: in 2022 still buy D3S / D3X ? As a first camera
@DidierMOULINPhotography
@DidierMOULINPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
As a first camera I would suggest more the D3S than the D3X. But yes it’s still relevant as the price drop a lot and they work even with the last AF-S generation E lenses with Electronic diaphragm. Be careful as they don’t work 100% with the AF-P lenses. Well they work with minor limitations. Take a D3S and mount the best lens you can on it and you’ll be pleased by the result. Take VR lens if you can as the camera doesn’t have IBIS. You will need Compact flash card as well No touch screen…. Heavy camera Loud shutter … But a very good school to learn with what was the best camera during many years. Also the D5 dropped a lot. Look there also but still much more expensive than a D3S. But easier to find a D5 in good shape than a D3S and it’s event more rare a D3X

@@Funktrainer some say the D4 series has a green color in its images… but I never tried. But yes you’re right, it can’t be a bad choice. The good thing is that D3 are very cheap and what about the D700 which is as good as the D3. It even has the sensor cleaning that the D3 doesn’t have. The D3S and X have it also If I had to upgrade from the D3S and X I would be tempted by the D6. The D3X is unique in the pro body line of Nikon with its 24 Mpx. Even the D6 still doesn’t reach this, with 21Mpx. The price to pay is 1600ISO MAX but in good light condition, this sensor has something unique. It’s subjective of course

I love using it in day light with great lenses to bring back stunning images. The S1R doubles the Mpixels and I love it too. The reason why I have both is that the 16-35 Nikon is so so and I have the 16-35 SL Leica which is a jewel. So for wide angle I use the S1R For long reach there is nothing to be as good as my Nikon 70-200 E FL or 300 PF or 500 PF… of course the 90-280 Leica on the S1R, considering the double amount of pixels would give the same result as if I had a let’s say 90-400mm on the D3X If I sell the D3X + 300PF + 500PF it may be an opportunity to look for a 90-280 Leica on the second hand market…
