I am going into grade 9 in September and when I am in Grade 10 I might join the IB program at my high school. A lot of people have been saying bad things about the IB program and very little good things about it so I was starting to feel like I shouldn't join the program. I am SO glad I came across this video because you have helped significantly! Thank you so much!

When I was younger I was very organized and did everything on time, education was top priority. Then I entered High school and I stopped, education didn't motivate me. People all around me went crazy about grades and even cheated. I had this sort of feeling of doing what was bad on purpose in order to just get out reality. This happened in a very difficult time of my life. Things I did were play video games or sleep. I feel like I am going back into my usual self though. I was convinced by my GT English teacher, who is also an IB teacher, to try IB. I am willing to change and to see how well I can hold up against a such steep challenge. It feels like making a U-turn but in the right direction.

M.A.D. Mutual Assured Destruction That sounds indeed like a step in the positive direction. I didn't care much until I entered the IB, and didn't do well until then. The skills I learnt help me a lot now though, and makes it all seem worth it. I wish you the best of luck!

Hey! I'm starting with IB this August and I'm really nervous-- I wasn't the brightest student in my class and I have stage fright to make things worse. I thinking of learning whatever I can out my syllabus in the one month vacation left which might help my subjects x.x Anyways, thank you for the tips! They sound lot more natural, comparatively speaking (I think I also imagined you almost crying idk why in many instances :P) Thank you, you pretty lady 😬
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
I understand that it's scary, but don't worry! You can do it! As for the stage fright, you really only have a limited number of presentations etc, so it's gonna be fine (: Personally I would rather recommend that you spend the remaining time of your summer to make good systems of organization, research and learn better study habits and relax. I personally spent most of my time trying to learn how to study right, so if you have that going for you everything will be a lot easier. Good luck!

@tharlunnaing I think it helps a lot to look at past papers and the answers, as well as solved problems in your textbook. I never fully understood most of it, but looking at how it was done time and time again eventually made it into my head. To check if your answers are correct, it can be helpful to look at the units, and see if they cancel and multiply and make sense it that way. Did this make sense at all? Haha, it's hard to explain, but key: past papers. Ask questions. Stay curious! Best of luck!

This was a nice video :D I have some questions for you: What was the biggest challenges in IB and how did you get through them? do you feel like you had enough help from the teachers in the period before the exam?
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Biggest challenges was definitely to figure out how to study the different subjects and how to remember what I studied. It took me over a year to figure out how to study to answer exam questions, and I didn't start using memorizing techniques till the very last few months. If I had known that, as well as how to structure my time and get more work out of my hours, in the very beginning, I probably would have done better with less work. The revision period was definitely what you made it. I still went to all our revision sessions, brought material I was unsure about, and asked questions, so for my part the teachers were extremely helpful during this time. But it was because I reached out to them, which it is for most people. I am very thankful now for what I learnt during the IB, as it has helped me so much in college, especially in terms of working habits and skills. (:

@jawadtijani It's difficult to say, I haven't gotten my results yet nor applied to those schools but some general things could be to make sure you get good grades early on. US schools accept you based on your predicted grades, so you will have to do well all through the IB, not just your end results. This is very challenging, so for you, staying on top of things are extremely important. US universities also looove extra curricular activities that you do through CAS, so take it seriously and aim to invest a lot of time in good activities. At those schools your grades count, your letters of recommendation, your activities outside school, your motivation for going there and your network (if you know or know someone who know someone who works at any of the schools, ask them to put in a good word for you!) I would also recommend you to look for different schools though- there are a lot of great universities in the US that specialize in what you might be interested in. Don't apply anywhere just because it has a good name, make sure it's also a good fit! Let me know if you want more help on applying for schools in the US! Start your application early and do as much research as possible. Good luck! (:

@rabiyasuleiman I think you can get it almost anywhere! If you have a target or something, you can find it there! All different types of stationary stores, online, or stores that have a bit of everything. Good luck finding one!

@anabaez Time management is hard, and it takes a lot of practice, failing, and time (ironically) to get it right. Try to focus as much as you can on your task at hand when you are working on it by removing other distractions, and break larger task up so they don't seem so overwhelming. Try working in shorter intervals, like writing on your lab report for 15 minutes, doing a few exam questions, having a break, then doing it over again. Almost anything related to the IB can be found online, so just do a little google search and you can find example labs and exams (: Best of luck!

Love the video thanks so much. I was wondering if you think typing class notes would be better than handwriting them? I start yr11 IB tomorrow so would love to know. Thanks!
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on you and the subject. For some subjects, like history and anthropology and such, typing could be beneficial, while for natural sciences and math, I would recommend writing by hand, as you will have drawings, equations, etc, to deal with (:
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
@lulwa Al-K I usually just googled them, with the entire top text of the paper. So for instance, for a chemistry paper 1 HL, I would google N10(motnh and year)/4/CHEMI(subject)/HPM/ENG/TZ0(time zone)/XX(/M+ is the mark scheme) Freeexampapers.com has a lot!
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
@amandecoffey That's not stupid at all. I know that they don't show the number of hours or days you miss from school on your diploma, and since you don't get any grades based on attendance it can't directly affect your grade. However, I must say, the people who miss a lot of school tend to do worse in the end, because they a) miss a lot of important explanation the teachers can give and b) often ditch school because they're not very motivated in the first place. So if you're very determined on doing well but for instance have a medical condition that keeps you home a lot you should be able to do fine. In the IB everything is your responsibility and your fault, as harsh as it may sound. Best of luck! (:
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
@tingtingyau That's great! Yeah, I haven't said anything because I, as you guessed, didn't take on a part time job. I wanted to at many occasions, but my mom wouldn't allow me, which I now am very thankful for. I advise working the summer instead, as you have more time and less stress. I really prioritized school when I did the IB, and of course wanted to do some social things on the side, as well as a looot of CAS, so I didn't have time or energy for a part time job. So keep strong and know your limits! Money can wait (:

2 weeks into the IBDP program for me, and the video, aghh just absolutely helpful. i've always procrastinated throughout my IGCSEs because really, like u said, there wasn't a need for being a good time manager. but in just 2 weeks i feel such a drastic change and im wondering if it's just my imagination but its just, i'm being a LOT more organized with my time (probably forced to bc heavier workload). is it normal if i want to decide my future career and even university after the program, or at least more later in the IBDP? one of my reasons for doing it instead of A levels was because of the breadth (aka i dont know what to do in the future). your video and comment responses not only helped me but motivated me, thank you so much
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, I'm so glad I could help!! And yes, it's completely normal not knowing what to do. You might figure it out as you go, or you may not, just be open minded and try to figure out what interest you. There will be a lot of pressure on deciding what you will do when you're done, but if you don't know, they you don't know, and there's nothing wrong with that! Best of luck! You'll do great (:

@aatifsyed Oh, that's a tough one. Some subjects, like Language A literature, are very similar in SL and HL, while some, like the natural sciences and math, are vastly different. It really depends on the subject, but the point is of course that you in HL go further in depth and do more reading and labs to understand more of the subject. If in doubt, start out with four HL subjects and drop one if it turns out to be too hard. I didn't do very well in TOK, not because it was very hard, but because I had absolutely no interest in it what so ever. That being said, I did put in a lot of work, did all my homework and assignments, wrote a "perfect TOK essay" after the criteria and got predicted an A, so I guess it mostly depends on who reads your essay (unfortunately). I feel like you mostly learn a lot of different things but that there's a limit to the depth of it, which is understandable as it gets very complicated further on. It's just a high school program, and some things even go beyond that, so I guess it depends on what you expect from it. I found chemistry very difficult and literature easy, but that's because I've always been reading a lot and never really had any natural sciences in school. We all have our strength and weaknesses, and you probably know yours ;) Best of luck! (:

Really good video! I'm doing my end term examinations now (still in my first year) and see that everything you have stated here would have benefited me so much more if only I had done them before the exams. I'm cramming for chemistry now and I believe that my score would only be close to 60-70%. Do you think that doing what you have mentioned in the video could help me turn around my performance in Math and Chemistry, those are my weakest subjects right now. Also, how do you keep a schedule of all your Internal Assessment deadlines? Do IA's only come on the second term? I wish that I could really use these tips to help me in the future because I really need to get my sleep cycle right again haha.
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Haha, I feel you, I also came to the end off my IB career and realized all the things I should have done long ago... Oh well, let's cram then! For chemistry I would say: go through the syllabus point by point, and make sure you understand them. Look up IB Chemistry on KZbin, Richard Thornley (I think???) has amazing videos that will help you out. Go through past exams- and tons of them! Ditch the textbook and what it has right now, no time for that. Look specifically close at the answers to the exams you do, and try to understand or remember the answers- the same type of questions come up often!!! For math: learn to use your calculator and the formula booklet- that will be the most helpful for you right now. I have videos on both of these subjects (: Our school gave us a list of internal deadlines the school had set so we wouldn't get it all at once. Ask your teachers if you're unsure, they will probably tell you if you have anything coming up. Just be aware that it will happen, which is seems that you are. That's always great (: Best of luck, and sorry for a messy answer, I'm really tired, haha. Nail those exams, and study hard form now on! :D

Hello Annika. Sorry for the last comment, my device went crazy 😊 I am taking pre-IB in Denmark right now and I just want your advice. I'm watching your KZbin channel and finding your videos very useful and helpful for me. So now I'm about to choose my subjects for the IBDP. I've gotten a permission from my school to take 7 subjects: English A HL Danish A SL Spanish ab initio SL Psychology SL Physics HL Math HL Visual Arts HL. And none of the A languages is my mother tongue, as I'm Russian and I moved to Denmark 2 years ago (I couldn't speak neither Danish nor English before). Btw both my English and Danish teachers think, that I can do it. So do you think it's possible to do or is it insane? I really want to choose the right subjects 😊 Hope to see an answer from u 😊 Best regards 😊 /Denis

+Kristen Koopmans I didn't have too much homework, but studied a lot to make sure I was on top of things. I probably spent like 4 hours studying every day, and some on the weekends and in holidays as well? It's not as bad as people make it seem if you stay on top of things and work effectively (:

@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын

Hi Brighton, i'm talking my first IB this year. However, i'm kinda freaking out with my first FOA assignment in English A. Any tips that you'd love to share?
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
That's completely normal, so don't worry about it (: For me, what helped was having a continuous and very open dialogue with my teacher about what was expected and if my outline for a presentation met those expectations. Also make sure you understand the topic you've chosen to talk about, and that you've read the books closely. Maybe even hold the presentation for your friends in that class before you actually have it, so they can ask questions and maybe point out some things you have forgotten about. Mostly, however, I would tell you to read the criteria over and over and over again till you really understand what they mean, and hold a good presentation that's interesting, engaging and not stressful. I know a lot of people struggle with holding presentations, but speaking loud and clearly and showing interest is super important! Best of luck!

+Earn-Earn Phitakchatchawal Hi! I didn't really study English much... I did all the readings and read through it again. Read and analyze is the best thing you can do
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
@denislelin That completely depends on you! Can I ask; why are you taking 7 subjects? And why are you choosing to do two A languages that are not your mother tongue instead of Russian A self-taught? Just out of curiosity (: Again, it all depends on how you learn and what you're good at. I would personally only take 6 subjects and not 2 A languages that I have only known for 2 years, but that's just me personally. If you feel confident that you can do it, go for it!
@denislelin438710 жыл бұрын
Well... If it could have been possible I would have done even more subjects, as I really like to learn new stuff and I like all of the IB subjects (more or less) :) I would like to take 2A languages first of all cuz I want to develop my skills. Second of all, i really love literature, I love to read and analyse different novels and poems :) Btw I am also dancing on a high level, which takes a lot of time. I know that it could sound insane, but I think I can manage it, as I am quite good at managing my time etc :) Fx this year I'm doing pre-IB, last year of my Russian public school (yes at the same time), dancing and I also have a job :) :) As I said before I really like a lot of subjects, therefore I am considering to take History HL instead of VA HL. I can't really make a choice :) Can you give me any advice about it :)

I really can't give too much advice on how to chose your subjects, as it is very individual, but it sounds like you have figured out what you want, so I say go for it!

Hey! I wonder how much free time you have during IB? Do you really have to study like every single day, during the weekends and stuff?
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
It's all what you make it really. I'm one of the people who study really hard, and I still have time to workout, watch tv, hang out with friends and do what I want. You just need to keep your priorities straight, and know when to say no to going out etc (:

so im starting preib (grade 9) in sept.I have 4 classes a day, and im wondering what supplies should I get? (we didn't get a list) Should I get a binder for each class. (im really nervous)
@BrightonDestiny9 жыл бұрын
Rebel thingz A binder for each class helps a lot! For me it took quite some time to figure out how I wanted to organize all my subjects, and I ended up having different systems for each class as they required different material etc. Try to look up different suggestions on KZbin and Pinterest, and go for something that you like, understand, find convenient and inspiring! Hopefully it all works out great for you, and you don't have to worry too much

I am thinking about taking an IB exam, but I am nervous. How good do you have to be, to start? I am danish, and I understand english as a normal scandinavian (I havd heard the nordics are good at english) Is it hard, or do you get used to it? Did you speak norwegian as your mothers tounge? And how long does it take to get used to speaking english, and to speak it right? :-)
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
It's very individual, but I would say that it took me a few weeks to get into the habit of having all my subjects in English. Yes, Norwegian is my mother tongue, and I have never lived abroad, so for me it has just been practice, practice, practice. I would suggest that you talk to your schools counselor or an IB coordinator of the school you wish to do the IB at if you want to know the standards, as it's very individual from school to school. I hoped that helped, and good luck!! (:
@nextstoplondon11 жыл бұрын
BrightonDestiny They offer the pre-IB programme in my town, is that a good idea? :-)
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Usually you will have IB teachers in pre-IB classes, and it's really helpful, as they will slowly introduce you to the IB and are able to get you prepared and mentally and academically ready. I did the same, and it helped me a lot!
@nextstoplondon11 жыл бұрын
how long does it take, before you can understand ALL english? :)
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
You will probably never understand everything about the English language, I don't think anyone does. However, it seems like you're already quite good and you're able to have a conversation in English, so it probably won't take much time before you're very confident and are able to do the IB with (close to) flawless English. They also keep in mind that most people doing the IB do not have English as their mother tongue, so I don't think you should worry about it (:
@izzyarmitage33510 жыл бұрын
Hi! What's the difference between A and B subjects in ib? Is one better than the other? For example I was put in SL Spanish B but don't know what the b means - love your accent by the way!
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
A and B are only relevant for languages- A means it's your mother tongue or you know it as if it is (there's a division in A languages again, between Literature and Language and literature), and B is recommended if you've had a language for a few years in school. I personally did English B HL only because I really loved the teacher, but I should have done English A because the level is much higher. So if you speak Spanish fluently, do it as A, if you've had it in school for a few years, do it as B (: Good luck!

@BrightonDestiny8 жыл бұрын
They will explain it to you! You usually don't start it till half way through your first year of the IB, at the earliest. So no, no need to start now, you probably don't even know what subject you will do it in, so just you wait!

i am entering 9th grade and i really want to do ib, my question is: will this program take up a lot of my time? I play soccer after school from 6-8 on mondays, wednesdays, and fridays. will this effect my schedule alot or just a little bit?
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
As long as you quickly learn how to manage your time it should be totally doable. It can seem as a challenge, especially in the beginning, but at least from what I've seen people who do something they love every week that's not school work have a tendency to stay more, how do I put it, sane. Just put some time in now learning how to organize, stop procrastinating and get the most out of your time, and this will not be a problem at all (: Good luck!

What are things that count as CAS?
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Depends on your school and how strict they are. Things that are usually always fine: for service: community service/volunteer hours, such as a senior center, shelter for homeless animals, soup kitchens, stuff like that; for creativity: playing instruments, going to a course to learn a new language, learning a new craft skill, such as painting and knitting; for action: picking up a new sport, and any type of organized physical activity/sport. These are very few, limited suggestions, but make sure you clear things with your CAS coordinator before the deadline (:

How much homework do you have per day?

Hi my Name is Nick and I'm applying for IB this coming year. I was just wondering how long should I have homework each night in the IB Program. ~Im terrified, Please Help!
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
Ah, you'll do fine! There's no specific time, it all depends on how much homework you have, what subjects you take and how well you are doing. If you understand everything you obviously have to spend less time working on it. As a general guideline I would suggest that you spend 30 minutes on your math and science course each every day, even if you don't have homework. If you keep working it should be a problem (:

Hello, I am starting IB in less than 2 weeks from today. I am panicking already!! I am doing Arabic, Theatre and Physiology HL. English B, Islamic and Math Studies SL. What do you think? I also haven't been a really good student for the past couple of years and I am regretting it so much. I don't know if I can survive because if we think that we really can't do it we can change to Queensland Certificate Education. HELP!
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Aren't you missing a group 3 subject? Other than that, it sounds very interesting! It's never too late to start working hard and really put your effort into school work, especially now that you start the IB.Try not to focus so much on how you've been doing prior to the IB and rather focus on doing well now, it saves you a lot of stress. Work hard and ask for help! Best of luck!

I'm an incoming 9th grader, and I was really worried because although I got accepted into the program, everyone else I know that is going is a 100% kind of of student, except I'm more of a 90. (This is just going by the standards of non Ib grades.)Is this going to seriously negatively impact me? Also, I go to a really time consuming Russian school, will I still have time for projects and homework?
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it doesn't matter what score you had before, what really matters is what you know of the basics that's relevant for the subjects you're going to take. As long as you pay attention, ask questions and try to stay on top of everything, it shouldn't be a problem. And I'm serious when I say ASK QUESTIONS. No matter how "silly" it may sound to other students, if you're unsure about what the teacher is talking about, ask! And for time: as long as you prioritize and stay on top of things, do homework as soon as it's assigned etc, it should be doable. Good luck! (:

Hi,am going to have an ib admission test in blindern since am new in norway and didnt do the norwegian schooling, and am pretty nervous ,am actually having it next month, i finished 8 years of primary school in kenya, so u probobly didnt have to do and entrance test but if u can just have an idea or if any of urr friends back in ib had to do it, how did they think it was. The test is in english and math
@BrightonDestiny9 жыл бұрын
Zainab Mohamed Hi Zainab! So none of the people I know entered the IB at Blindern when that was the school, they entered when it was still Berg (a bit confusing, I know). I know, however, that although it is a great school, they want to give the opportunity to as many students as possible. From what I can see from your post you don't seem to struggle with English, so that's fine, and math shouldn't be too hard either, especially if you are planning on taking SL or studies. I'm sorry I couldn't help more, but I think you will do just fine! Best of luck!

@BrightonDestiny9 жыл бұрын
sam207y Don't freak out, it's okay! What years the IB are depends on the school system in your country, in the US it's year 11 and 12!
@tammyrieck351410 жыл бұрын
Is IB really worth it? I live in the US and I'm debating whether or not I should be in the program. Should I take AP classes instead of IB when I reach grade 11? Will being in IB give me college credit? THANK YOU SO MUCH"
@BrightonDestiny10 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on what you're planning on doing. If you're planning on studying in the US, then AP and IB both give you credit, how much depends on each individual school. I think IB builds really great study habits if done right, which are more meaningful than just grades, and help tremendously in college. But yeah, look at your potential schools, see what IB and AP classes you can take, and chose whatever seems more interesting and better for you.

Im considering dropping out and not doing the grade 12 year. Im so toorrn, its a horrible feeling, and I dont know what to do. Any advice?
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's difficult. I understand that school can seem really tiring and many people lose their motivation, but I would still recommend that you try your hardest to finish when you're still in school. Many people try to go back and finish high school at a later point, and they all say it's a lot harder, both socially and academically. It all depends, but I suggest you talk to your parents, teachers and school counselor before you make your finial decision. You can do it! Good luck sweety, you'll do great no matter what you do (:
@pizzapizzaheyheyhey11 жыл бұрын
oh I meant dropping out of IB, not high school. lol sorry for not being specific
@BrightonDestiny11 жыл бұрын
Well, okay, that's a bit different but most of my answer still stands. If you're already a year into the IB I think you should finish it, but try to see what your options are. Can you possibly split the last year? Is there anything your school can help with, for instance putting you in contact with tutors if you're struggling with specific subjects? It's a great high school diploma to have, but it's not worth your happiness. I hope you figure it out (:
