Yes! You can see him weighing his options before he draws the line in the sand. Probably bullied his whole life by Biff and his goons up until this point. He knew that doing the right thing might cost him not just emotionally, but physically, if he failed (not to mention the terrible fate that awaited Loraine), but he took that chance anyway because it was the right thing to do. True bravery in the face of his tormentor. Just love this scene so much.

A big part of it was Marty getting him to rehearse the line. And so when George confronted Biff, he didn’t know what else to say. But Marty had pumped him up enough to actually go through with it even when it was Biff instead. Can I just say that this movie is absolutely incredible and perfect?

The absolute best part of this movie is how George standing up for himself one time changed his entire life. And you don’t even know it until Marty goes back to the future and finds out his life is totally different. Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of manning up to change everything.

My theory is that the first time, biff wasn’t in the car it was Marty and because the situation wasn’t real she fell in love with this idea of a badass George McFly but she soon realized he was a wimp when he didn’t stand up to biff the next day and got she stuck with george. But since this time the situation is real and not fabricated she falls in love with the badass George mcfly who is actually badass and stands up for himself.

@logicaldude3611 I guess the advice from Goldie Wilson helped George telling him to stand up for himself even though I'm sure Goldie saw and heard Biff bullying George a second time in the Cafe where Biff said to George, "hey McFly, I told you to never come in here again and now it's going to cost you" and even though Goldie wasn't the owner of the Cafe, I can only hope that the owner Lou Carrather's banned Biff from entering the Cafe.

Biff himself would have been taught a disciplinary lesson after being bashed by George McFly? in the sequel, we see Mr Strickland get tough against Biff, which proves that the teachers also hated Biff and wanted him disciplined.
@afriendofbean

@@yiannisdanatzis2889 Plus, even though the principal Mr. Strickland hated Biff too I'm sure, I could only hope if he saw George punch Biff that he wouldn't arrange for George to get suspended or a detention for punching on school grounds. Also yes, I remember Mr. Strickland confronting Biff on the second film for having an attitude carrying a Sports magazine of women and assuming Biff was drinking liquor after smelling it around him which was true even though Biff said that he was underage to drink liquor.

@@newgwg In the Telltale Game there's the dialogue Marty has with George where he says " About Biff,Dad, I know your trying to help." "He talks a big game son but he's not so tough. I've been dealing with him a long time. Believe me I can handle him." "So can I" "I guess you can, okay son I'll stay out of your way. But you know where to find me." "Dad "Problem?" marty shakes his head yes and nudges towards Biff) "Biff?" "He's got this thing see and I really need to get it back." "If he stole something from you!-" George still retains that fire when his family is in trouble. Even when Biff acts like his usual self since part 2 he always cowers to George if George is angered.

What made the difference in George was realizing this wasn’t just a set-up anymore. His friend Marty isn’t there like planned. Nobody is faking anything to set up a meet-cute. This is an assault in progress, and nobody else is around. Lorraine, though terrified, had the courage to try to help George…and got roughly shoved to the ground for her trouble. That’s it. The weak “nice guy” can’t run, can’t hide, can’t tolerate this guy hurting anyone else anymore. And…he learns big bad Biff Tannen had a glass jaw this whole time…. Nice guys don’t start fights, but if you’re gonna fight you better finish them.

@@mikecantreed I know that. What I'm saying is that Marty's life back in 1985 was somewhere between ok and dysfunctional. In the 1950's with the time machine, Marty's existence was on the line of being erased when his parents weren't destined to meet each other and George was a socially awkward teenager who couldn't talk to teenage girls. Marty had to not only set things right before going back home, but improve his father's self-confidence and the unexpected new family's lifestyle in 1985.

We've all had a similar moment. I never saved anyone but I punched my bully out in 8th grade and it's still one of the things I'm most proud of to this day. Not a single teacher cared because he gave so many people a hard time. Yet I actually felt really bad for him at first because it's not like me to do something like this, he just kept shoving me and I'd had enough

I sort of had a similar incident. This one kid kept teasing me in the 2nd grade and wouldn't stop. The gym teacher did nothing. Told me to ignore him. The kid continued to tease me and got me all distraught. I literally had a crying meltdown. Then he's in my 3rd grade math class. He refused to do his work one day and the teacher kicked him out. Then later in the year, we had this really strict substitute teacher. The kid again refused to do his work, and the teacher snapped, gave him 12 checkmarks, and kicked him out.

I like a lot about this scene, but as a kid, I didn't fully appreciate that he's amazed in the aftermath of his successful punch, and could've easily gotten lost in his giddy gleefulness. But instead he realizes that Lorraine's safety and feelings, as the victim of Biff's attempted assault, are the important thing to focus on rather than his triumph. So he puts that aside and asks her if she's okay and helps her up. As an adult, I really appreciate that little nuance, it really adds to the scene and speaks to his character growth.

This moment and the moment Biff crashes into a manure truck would have put a big dent in Biff's life, no way he will ever want to remember such year when a mysterious boy came along and helped George McFly improve his life.

And thus George McFly became class president, accomplished his dream and got married with Lorraine and had kids, they have been nicer and healthier and, George and Lorraine went easy on Marty when he accidentally set fire on a rug in their house, Dave and Linda have successful jobs and Marty has the car he’s been wanting. Biff, on the other hand, left George alone and ended his bullying and became nicer, he started his own auto detailing business and was no longer disrespectful towards anyone.

It just occurs to me that this encounter is the sort of thing you could have in a western. It seems a shame when they did Back to the future part 3 there was no instance of someone having to physically fight Buford Tannen in order to rescue a lady from him. I know he does come on to Clara - but it seems a shame He does not have to be fought with like Biff is here. It occurs to me it could have worked with Doc Brown having to fight with Buford to save Clara from him. I know Buford used to pick on Seamus McFly - it occurs to me maybe one of the reasons for this was he could have had designs on Seamus's wife Maggie. I know this is not made clear in the film, but the book does say that he did used to pick on Marty's great grandfather Seamus.

“No Biff, you leave her alone” gets me every time. He looks so damn scared when he notices it’s Biff. You can feel that 99% of the voice in his head is telling him to get the hell out of there. But he listens to that 1% that tells him to man up. Even if he had lost the fight, it’s one of the major “grow some gigantic balls” moments in cinema history. Love this movie.

Here is something funny if it happened after 2:16: Mr. Strickland (walking by in the parking lot): McFly you slacker, you are suspended for punching Biff Tannen and knocking him out on the school grounds. George: Mr. Strickland, you are aware that Biff has been bullying me and he was attacking Lorraine physically and I had to defend she and I. Lorraine: It's the truth Mr. Strickland, George was saving me from Biff. Mr. Strickland: I understand Biff was a bully and a slacker but McFly you still punched on school grounds and are on a suspension for two weeks. Leave the school now or I'll make it three weeks. Marty: Oh no, my mom and dad never dated at the dance together as was supposed to happen. Now I'm fading away out of existence like my brother and sister are in the picture.

One thing i don't understand. How does George become superior to Biff? 9/10 times Biff would win him. When he wakes up he will revenge, not bend over.
