Yes! You can see him weighing his options before he draws the line in the sand. Probably bullied his whole life by Biff and his goons up until this point. He knew that doing the right thing might cost him not just emotionally, but physically, if he failed (not to mention the terrible fate that awaited Loraine), but he took that chance anyway because it was the right thing to do. True bravery in the face of his tormentor. Just love this scene so much.

A big part of it was Marty getting him to rehearse the line. And so when George confronted Biff, he didn’t know what else to say. But Marty had pumped him up enough to actually go through with it even when it was Biff instead. Can I just say that this movie is absolutely incredible and perfect?

The absolute best part of this movie is how George standing up for himself one time changed his entire life. And you don’t even know it until Marty goes back to the future and finds out his life is totally different. Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of manning up to change everything.

My theory is that the first time, biff wasn’t in the car it was Marty and because the situation wasn’t real she fell in love with this idea of a badass George McFly but she soon realized he was a wimp when he didn’t stand up to biff the next day and got she stuck with george. But since this time the situation is real and not fabricated she falls in love with the badass George mcfly who is actually badass and stands up for himself.

@logicaldude3611 I guess the advice from Goldie Wilson helped George telling him to stand up for himself even though I'm sure Goldie saw and heard Biff bullying George a second time in the Cafe where Biff said to George, "hey McFly, I told you to never come in here again and now it's going to cost you" and even though Goldie wasn't the owner of the Cafe, I can only hope that the owner Lou Carrather's banned Biff from entering the Cafe.

@@yiannisdanatzis2889 Plus, even though the principal Mr. Strickland hated Biff too I'm sure, I could only hope if he saw George punch Biff that he wouldn't arrange for George to get suspended or a detention for punching on school grounds. Also yes, I remember Mr. Strickland confronting Biff on the second film for having an attitude carrying a Sports magazine of women and assuming Biff was drinking liquor after smelling it around him which was true even though Biff said that he was underage to drink liquor.

I sort of had a similar incident. This one kid kept teasing me in the 2nd grade and wouldn't stop. The gym teacher did nothing. Told me to ignore him. The kid continued to tease me and got me all distraught. I literally had a crying meltdown. Then he's in my 3rd grade math class. He refused to do his work one day and the teacher kicked him out. Then later in the year, we had this really strict substitute teacher. The kid again refused to do his work, and the teacher snapped, gave him 12 checkmarks, and kicked him out.

What made the difference in George was realizing this wasn’t just a set-up anymore. His friend Marty isn’t there like planned. Nobody is faking anything to set up a meet-cute. This is an assault in progress, and nobody else is around. Lorraine, though terrified, had the courage to try to help George…and got roughly shoved to the ground for her trouble. That’s it. The weak “nice guy” can’t run, can’t hide, can’t tolerate this guy hurting anyone else anymore. And…he learns big bad Biff Tannen had a glass jaw this whole time…. Nice guys don’t start fights, but if you’re gonna fight you better finish them.

It just occurs to me that this encounter is the sort of thing you could have in a western. It seems a shame when they did Back to the future part 3 there was no instance of someone having to physically fight Buford Tannen in order to rescue a lady from him. I know he does come on to Clara - but it seems a shame He does not have to be fought with like Biff is here. It occurs to me it could have worked with Doc Brown having to fight with Buford to save Clara from him. I know Buford used to pick on Seamus McFly - it occurs to me maybe one of the reasons for this was he could have had designs on Seamus's wife Maggie. I know this is not made clear in the film, but the book does say that he did used to pick on Marty's great grandfather Seamus.

Lorraine: It's the truth Mr. Strickland, George was saving me from Biff. Mr. Strickland: I understand Biff was a bully and a slacker but McFly you still punched on school grounds and are on a suspension for two weeks. Leave the school now or I'll make it three weeks. Marty: Oh no, my mom and dad never dated at the dance together as was supposed to happen. Now I'm fading away out of existence like my brother and sister are in the picture.

Why did George punch Biff in the face that would just piss him off even more

@pinker505 That could be true but, if you watch the second film, the thing that angered Biff more was when future Marty took the Sports Almanac from him and Biff wanted the Sports Almanac back which would probably mean at that point George wasn't too interested in assaulting Lorraine anymore and didn't care about the punch George did.

This is a very romanticized type of film which deluded an entire generation of males to be that 'Knight in shining armor'. That if they treated women with respect, fought for their honor...they would be rewarded with the prom queen. Reality however is basically the opposite. This is what would have happened. Biff would have put Lorraine in the backseat to screw around, and if George McFly showed up...Biff would toss McFly the car keys and tell him to drive him and Lorraine to a quieter place where Biff can do what he wants. Once parked in the middle of nowhere, Biff would tell George to 'take a walk, be back in five'. As George is taking a walk: Biff would jump into the driver's seat and drive off with Lorraine laughing. The next day, Biff and Lorraine would be laughing with the rest of their classmates over the prank they pulled on George. This is more accurate because I basically lived that. Don't believe the liars: "Nice guys" DO finish last.
