Notice that instead of cheesing and getting happy right away, Marty spent this entire scene utterly bewildered, even a little stressed out, that a week spent in the past and what he said to his parents changed his entire life. Not even able to smile for the truck he wanted before the beginning of the movie that he now magically has, because his values have changed, he has changed and so has everything else, the only thing that was the same was the girl and that gave him relief, and seeing his parents the way they always should have been. Such a beautifully written movie, that was packaged as a sci-fi comedy.

The main part of this movie for me that nobody really seems to talk about is that Marty fixed his parents. He didn’t set out to do that. He had to do that to bring them together by teaching them both a better way to go through life. They weren't rich when he got back. They were healthier, more comfortable, and happier because of the better path they went down after Marty helped them help themselves. If you notice at the end, Lorraine knew that Marty was planning to go to the lake with Jennifer. That was something that he felt that he had to lie about to her before he went back to 1955. Obviously, he was unaware that their relationship was more open now..something that he would have to get used to. For me, how he inadvertently made his parents better people, and his relationship better with them, was the most beautiful thing about this movie.
@marilynsobel74144 ай бұрын
They were definitely wealthier (even if not rich), probably because George McFly got the managerial job that Biff used to have. They could afford a BMW and a Toyota 4x4. One thing that is interesting is if you look at the furniture it is sort of similar, but in old 1985 it is all dark and depressing, while in new 1985 the colors are much lighter (white, pink) and everything looks nicer. One thing that puzzles me (in a minor way) about the end is that it is presumably the weekend (since Marty is going off to the lake and he doesn't seem to be late for school) but Dave is going to the office. It would be pretty rare for a low-level employee to head to the office on Saturday.
@dan_382 ай бұрын
@marilynsobel7414 its implied that he's a workaholic manager, by the way that he's out of the loop when it comes to stuff (the supposed wrecked car), but he is a lot closer to his family, from dealing with a social butterfly of a sister to letting Marty have a more carefree lifestyle, much like their father now has. Work centric? yes, but his hearts for his family when theirs stuff in need of fixing
@marilynsobel74142 ай бұрын
@@dan_38 Yes, I agree that is the implication -- he is very committed to his job (I wonder if it is also a bit of an in-joke, because Michael J. Fox's character on Family Ties was working toward a career in finance). It still seemed a bit odd, because I don't think they give keys to employees until they are fairly high up. But maybe half the office goes to work on Saturday. I didn't mean to suggest that it implied he didn't care about his family. Clearly, we are meant to see that by teaching his own father how to stand up for himself he now has confident parents who love and respect each other, and were therefore able to model love and respect to their children. This really is an absolutely perfect movie -- everything that happens in the movie happens for a reason and it all ties together in the end.

Also because the main reason things work out this well is cause it's a movie. If Time Travel worked a bit more like how it probably would Marty still wouldn't exist given the sheer amount of differences that would happen with his parents after his interaction with them.
@destinywhite20637 ай бұрын
@@thefanwithoutaface8105Well, the thing is, all of that happened by accident. Have to be very careful with time travel. Marty got sent back to 1955 by sheer accident. He forgot to check the dashboard and that exact date and year was still in there for testing purposes. Marty landed there, walked into town and ran smack into his father, which he wasn’t prepared for. He had no idea what his father looked like as a teenager and even if he did, it was still a shock to him. He wasn’t used to 18 year old George McFly. Marty didn’t have that frame of mind. Marty didn’t know the rules of time travel. Or he would’ve known to stay out of sight and not to talk to anyone. Cause anything he said to people or did for or with anyone could have far reaching consequences many years later. That’s how he messed up his mom and dad getting together. He wasn’t thinking and pushed George out of the way when her dad almost hit him with the car, causing her to fall in love with Marty instead of George. Then he had to go back and fix it. Destiny always gets it own way. You never know who you’ll influence with even an encouraging word. Like Marty in 1955 telling Goldie Wilson when he was saying he was going to be somebody, Marty said “yeah, you’re going to be….mayor.” Marty started realizing he had to watch his mouth and what he said to people. Cause he still had that 1985 mindset and he was in 1955. Tv was just invented and no one knew what a rerun was.

Such changes the family went through by the end of the first film in this trilogy, thanks to Marty. George went from being a nervous coward to more self-confident of himself; Lorraine now approves of her kids going out on dates unlike earlier where she was a drunk alcoholic who disapproved of it; Linda went from being bored to now being part of an active social life; and Dave went from a potential minimum wage job at Burger King to a proper office job. Not to mention, as for Biff, well, at least he turned from a bullying jerk of George’s supervisor to a more mature and friendly car businessman, running his own auto detailing company. So thanks to this, even Marty sure got lucky he now has the Toyota Hilux truck as a coveted gift from his parents.

This was the era of Ronald Reagan. The middle class was just beginning to be whittled down to what it is today. People could feel that things were getting scary. There was also an awareness that economic well-being could be changed, could be improved. And that the difference between success and its opposite was often luck and circumstance. The movie makes the point of sympathizing with the downtrodden. When Marty sees the homeless guy after being in an America that had no homeless people, he sees the difference. Feels the difference. I'm not sure the movie gets the credit it deserves for its social commentary. We don't seem to do as well at this kind of commentary today.

Many theories exist about George and Lorraine not recognizing Marty as their son after encountering him in 1955. Here is a way to explain multiple aspects simultaneously. First, his parents DID know that he has time-traveled into the past and changed their futures for the better. This happened because after Marty bid them farewell in 1955 and went on his way, they started their own family. They named their son Marty after the young man who helped them in High School. Then, they realized that, over time, their son Marty strongly resembled the Marty who helped them, especially as he reached his teen years. As a result, they chose to speak to Doctor Emmett L. Brown, one of his few friends, to see if he knew anything of the connection. Doctor Brown, similar to how he chose to read Marty's letter, had another 'What the H***' moment and decided to fill them in on Marty's appearance in 1955, including how he helped Doctor Brown himself. Therefore, realizing how their lives were before they met Marty in 1955, they became aware that it is because of him that they obtained and can enjoy the fulfilling and successful lives they now possess in 1985. As to Marty not being allowed into the secret, I believe his parents and Doctor Brown also told him of that. However, they did so later on when he was a man and could handle it. The future Marty in Back To The Future 2 on October 21, 2015, was likely in on it. This explains why he is on good speaking terms with his parents; they trusted him with the secret, so he felt he could trust them with his private life. Likely, the young Marty shown at the end of Back To The Future 3 waving goodbye to Doctor Brown on his Steam Engine Time Machine, thanked his parents for the Toyota Hilux after finally getting to drive it for the first time in the third film. Remember, it was present in and he acquired it in the first two films, however, he did not get to actually drive it until the third. At that time, his parents thought he was man enough to know the truth, so they revealed that they knew his connection to their history and that the Toyota Hilux was their way of expressing thanks to him for providing them with an improved future. Then later, Doctor Brown simply elaborated on it. This explains how Marty received the Toyota Hilux he wanted at the end of Back To The Future 1. His counterpart in the new timeline likely noticed it being delivered. However this version was on better speaking terms with his parents and therefore expressed his interest in BOTH it AND to BOTH Jennifer AND his parents. Hence, George and Lorraine bought it for him and then hid it until October 26, 1985, as they knew that the version of Marty that returned to 1985 was the one who helped them. It was a thank you for giving them a better life. Further, as that version of Marty was on better speaking terms with his parents they were aware of his relationship with Jennifer as he trusted them with such knowledge of his personal life. Additionally, since they were improved, they trusted him with Jennifer. That explains or Lorraine was aware that Marty was dating Jennifer and called her a sweet girl after he returned from 1955, likely because the new version of Lorraine saw much of herself in Jennifer. I believe at that time to they also informed Dave and Linda and they all agreed as family to keep everything a secret. Marty would definitely want to do this, and keep his knowledge of time traveling into the future or 1885 to himself, Doc, and Jennifer. His family would be all over him if they knew he did that. Moreover, as Jennifer was now in on the secret of the time machine at the end of the third film, she is likely present when Marty's parents inform him and agreed to be sworn to secrecy with them. This reinforced the determination of both Marty and herself to make their future wonderful, as Doctor Brown had advised them to. For example, Marty learned not to let people goad him into doing something stupid by calling him names. His used this to avoid the racing car wreck and improve his future. Jennifer, retaining the memories of seeing her future self in Back To The Future 2 and not liking what she saw, took steps to improve herself and her future as well. Hence, their futures are now better, as indicated in Back To The Future - The Animated Series, just like those of Marty's parents. Marty became a famous Rock Star as he wanted, Jennifer got to build a much more desirable body figure, and their kids became much more successful than their original versions in Back To The Future 2. On side note, I love how Marty smiles and shakes his fist in a 'YES' motion alongside the Toyota Hilux driver's door and window in Back To The Future 1 and 2, along with physically banging the widow in Back To The Future 2 . I am sure he is thinking: 'I am going to LOVE my life in this timeline. I am still the same and my whole family is much happier, more successful, and better off. This is going to be good.' It is clear from the films that Dave and Linda are much happier and more successful with good paying jobs and solid social lives. It looks like Biff too is actually happier and more successful in this timeline as he is no longer a bully. Since he no longer bully George he had to learn to be responsible and do things for himself. As a result, he was forced to find a job that he was good at and did well. This meant his confidence and sense of accomplishment improved as each failure gave him a lesson to learn and wisdom to improve while each success have him a feeling of pleasure and pride because he knew he truly did himself, for himself. Further, without Biff to lead them, his gang members most likely went their separate ways, ended up doing likewise as Biff, and found success in their own lives. Additionally, Doc, Clara, and their children are also successful because as Back To The Future - The Animated Series shows Doc has found a loving family while still getting to practice science he loves. Clara is successful as she has a loving and children while having her dream career as teacher. She does at Hill Valley Elementary School meaning she has found contentment settling into 20th Century Life. Finally their children, Jules and Verne, have literally been given their own lives by Doc and Clara meeting where they can find their own dreams and goals. Finally, with Marty and Jennifer changing their future creating a new one from what is shown in Back To The Future 2, it likely changed the future for those around them. This includes Griff as Biff likely interacted with him differently. Therefore, he and his gang members also became more mature, happier, and successful in life. So in fact, it is highly likely, although highly ironically, that Marty actually did a very wonderful thing by time traveling to both 1955 and 1885, as he created a timeline that worked out excellently for everyone: Marty himself, Doc, George, Dave, Jules, Verne, Clara, Jennifer, Lorraine, Linda, Biff, Biff's Gang Members, Griff, and Griff's Gang Members. I just hope they will all appreciate it, especially Marty, as he is the one who did it to them, the only one who knows the whole truth about doing so, and the only one with complete memories of how everything used to be. Doc and Jennifer would be next as they are aware of what their future could be and therefore understand the importance of making it a good one. George, Lorraine, and Clara would be last as they are aware of learning from the past to make their future brighter.

Yeah it was always a little pretentious to me that a 20 year old actor would argue with a director over the ending of a movie that made him famous and also is the best movie ever made about standing up to bullies to find your confidence. I wish Crispin could have set aside differences with Zemeckis to see what he achieved, appeared in 2 and 3 and he would have had plenty of chances to make movies about putting other forms of happiness over material gain

But when his dad quotes it back to him in 1985 (in this scene), the dad says, "It's like I always say, 'If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.'" So the dad takes it as something he (the dad) says, not what Marty said to him in the past. He remembered Marty enough to include the yellow-suited figure on the cover of the novel. But he also only knew Marty in the past for 1 day. So maybe he doesn't remember facial features, or even perhaps his name. @Anthony-xe5db2 ай бұрын
I believe I read somewhere that Crispin Glover didn’t like this ending. That he saw it was more sad than happy because Marty returned to a time where his family were entirely different people or something like that. If you think about it, he’s right. While they’re still Marty’ parents and siblings, they’re entirely different people with different adult personalities and totally new versions of themselves. Marty doesn’t know this version of his family or their past as everything and everyone is now different, and who knows if he’ll be able to relate to them in the long run. It seems Mary has only the memories of the original incarnation of his family. It’s also interesting that Marty and his bedroom are the only two beings in the house that didn’t change in the new timeline as if the timeline change up to that point entirely went around him. If you think about it too, this new timeline in fact would of ruined Marty in the long run if it wasn’t for Doc in BTTF Part 3 not indirectly telling him what caused his life to go down hill. The events of BTTF Part 2 is based off the new timeline. So, the only reason Marty got into that car accident with his new 4X4 and that Rolls-Royce while racing with Needles is because of the changes created to his family's timeline from the changed events from 1955. Had the original timeline stayed or Marty never traveled to 1955 by accident than Marty would of never had the 4X4, and his parents car was totaled so he wasn't able to drive that, so Marty would of never raced Needles two days later that created the downhill events in Marty' life that lead up too 2015.

That was part of it. The other part he didn't like was that the movie implied that wealth and status was a necessity for happiness, and he preferred that the family be in a similar financial situation, but happy, confident, and a stronger unit. He felt the ending was capitalist propoganda.
