The big "CDs" are actually called Laser Discs. They were basically dvds that were ahead of their time
@serinx
@serinx 10 ай бұрын
Laser Discs had analog video (@400-425 lines in NTSC) and sometimes digital audio / surround. Adoption suffered due to large size, expense, and run length of discs (they had 2 formats CAV and CLV - the former allowed for easier freeze frame and some other benefits but was 30 minutes per side, later was 60 minutes). So did not work well for movies with the need to flip discs. DVDs discs where introduced once Red lasers allowed CD type discs to store 6X as much information per side. Additionally digital video compression (such as MPEG-2) further allowed fitting more video (@ 480 lines of resolution) per side (you could dial in the data allocation if trying to fit a longer movie on 1 side). Early DVD encodes could look pretty bad, though still better than VHS. Encoders/decoders got better over time and eventually Blu-Ray (with an even smaller laser) increased both the data space available and had better resolution at 1080 lines and more efficient compression codecs. 4K UHD Blu-Ray (twice 1080p / HD) is - sadly- probably that last iteration of physical disc media as 4K and HD via streaming look 'good enough'... but are not the highest quality for home theater and generally with streaming you never fully 'own' your movies.

A fun aspect to the BTTF sequels is they were released 6 months apart. Zemeckis filmed them back to back and then gave the fans a treat releasing them so close together instead of waiting years.

Another fun fact, when the first movie released in theaters it ended with "The End". By the time it came out to video it was so popular they already decided on making the sequels. So, by the time people watched it on VHS the movie ended with "To Be Continued....".

I'm guessing Doc's rejuvenation mask was the plot's answer to not making him use an aging mask for the entire rest of the movie(s), like he did in the beginning and end of the first movie. The best part of this trilogy is that every time you re-watch it, you notice details you missed the previous times because you know what's gonna happen, which makes it even more awesome. I already know I'm gonna love your reaction to the 3rd (and unfortunately last) movie, and its perfect ending to the trilogy.

According to Bob Gale on the commentary, they did the "mask" gag for three reasons: it's funny, it erased the need for them to put old-age makeup on Lloyd for two films (sparing the actor all the time and discomfort, as well as and saving money), and to give Doc extra decades to be a good father to his children.

Awesome reaction! Yes, the departure of Glover was a big deal at the studio. There was a dispute over his compensation, and when he walked, they added his likeness to another body without express permission. This caused Glover to sue. He won the suit, establishing the new precedent that it's illegal for a studio to do that.

It’s weird I still see it as the future because it’s so different from what actually happened. I always figured these movies would have an expiration date but they’ve proved to be timeless. Also the 80s feel like the beginning of whatever trajectory we’re on now so none of the “present” feels dated. Then again it’s the first decade I ever knew so my perspective is skewed. Still it feels like the 90s were the last decade to have a distinct identity(and a name we all agree on) and since then we’ve had a series of spin off decades of those 2(maybe even a bit of the 70s)
@promontorium
@promontorium 15 күн бұрын
@@michaelblaine6494 Yes, the decades ended after 2000. Time and culture just aren't viewed that way. And I've reflected on that for the last decade, and only recently really certain the answer is because society started putting so much energy and creativity into the internet that we kind of left those things behind. We don't collectively obsess about fashion that defines a decade, fashion just washes over constantly. We stopped having a definitive music by the mid 2000s. The democratization of everything splintered us.

Do u mean not written yet, or they didnt intend to make a sequel?, because the first ends with it saying across the screen “to be continued” if they didnt plan on making one, thatd be kind of a dumb move....i saw the first bttf in the theater in 1985 as a 10 year old & it was a big deal that it said “to be continued” b;c that never happened with movies back then & it certainly wasnt implied 95+% of the time.... i agree with the studios wanting to cash in & make money & force something to be a franchise, but it seems like Zmeckis def planned, or at least wanted, to make a sequel, again, because at the end of bttf 1, it said it on the screen before the credits , even in the original theatrical cut, its not like that was added years later to dvds

Even bo**-jobs were very unheard of at common people. It also predicted a wide use of VR-headsets. It also predicted that in 2015 a lot of people would like the 80-retro-feeling. The ending of the 1st Back to the Future was meant as a spoof. Back to the Future was not expected to make a lot of money and the ending was meant to be satirical. When Back to the Future became a blockbuster and the studios wanted more movies then they were stuck with that ending for the sequel and had to write a script around it. This is the reason why Jennifer was brought with them in the car, but was ultimately knocked out and placed to the side. It was unfortunate for the part of Jennifer, but the writers were stuck between a rock and a hard place: What to do with Jennifer.

As originally scripted, 2 and 3 were one movie. But in development they realized it was getting too big and they needed to give the third act climax some space. So when it was split off to its own movie, it left part 2 with no real ending (Marty just got the book from Biff after George knocked him out and burned it on the school football field). So they added the whole car chase sequence to give this one a more exciting climax.

I once had the DVD for this movie. It had a deleted scene that illustrated the changing timeline in 2015. Remember the way old Biff was struggling when he brought the DeLorean back? That's because _he_ was feeling the effects of the changing timeline. When he sees the DeLorean disappear into the past with our heroes on board, his hopes disappear _with_ them, and he feels it. He cries out, lies down on the ground, and disappears. They cut this scene, because it raised more questions than it answered. I watched it through, once, on its own, then I watched it with the commentary on. In the commentary, they explained that, somewhere along the line (it's not revealed exactly when) Biff pushed Lorraine too far and she _shot_ him.

A little bit of cinema history - the lot that contains the clock-tower etc is the same lot that "Gremlins" was shot on. Zemeckis and the Production team originally were dead against the idea of using that lot but it's all that was available. It ended up being a massive advantage after Marty McFly was re-cast from Eric Stoltz to Michael J. Fox. They'd shot nearly half the movie with Stoltz in the role but having the static-set of the lot meant they could re-shoot around Fox's availability, it would have been a logistical nightmare otherwise.

Had a sequel been a possibility at the time, they've said they would never have had Jennifer get in the car as she served no purpose in the overall story.

My biggest complaint with BTTF2 is how Biff knew how to use the time circuits. It's not exactly an intuitive interface, not to mention the "where you've been" readout is 1955. It SHOULD be reading 1985, since Doc had just come back from picking Marty and Jennifer up from 1985.

It's cool that you're checking out the sequels. In my comment on the last one I mentioned that the script for the first one is often lauded as a perfect script. Likewise, now that I know you're watching them all, these three films are often called a perfectly executed trilogy. They're really great and I'm excited to see you get into them. Keep in mind all the little foreshadowing moments we got from Doc talking about his dream of visiting the old west to the clip on the tv in Biff's museum talking about his ancestor "Buford". There are more. It's wonderfully tied together. I love how much fun you're having with this series (as you should be). Thanks for sharing and I'll be watching for the next one.

You're right about Crispin Glover not being in this. He basically wanted too much money and was being a bit of a diva when they tried to negotiate a contract, and eventually they said they'd go ahead without him if he wasn't more reasonable. So that's what happened. Then after the film's release he sued them for using his likeness in the movie without permission.
@poolhall9632
@poolhall9632 Жыл бұрын
The director used another actor and made him to look like Glover using prosthetics. “Robert Zemeckis got creative with footage from the first movie featuring Glover. Then, they made prosthetics of his face from the molds used to create the 1985 George McFly make up and brought in Jeffrey Weissman to wear those pieces as he recreated scenes from the first film at different angles. Eventually, Weissman would not only portray 1955 George, but 1985 and 2015 George as well. This had gone far beyond the stand-in or photo double work that he thought he was signing up” Glover’s lawsuit changed how likeness etc is treated in Hollywood. He was absolutely being a diva about $ and script changes though.
@bobbuethe1477
@bobbuethe1477 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't about wanting more money. Just the opposite, really. Glover thought that the ending of the first movie sent a bad message: that wealth equals happiness. He didn't believe in that, so he refused to do the sequel, and sued when they used clips of him from the first movie anyway.

@@bobbuethe1477 Which is a pretty silly and shallow interpretation of the first movie's ending. To me what the ending of the first movie says is that self confidence brings happiness and success. The McFlys aren't happier because George has money now, the financial success and the family's happiness are both a result of George being more confident and willing to fight for what he wants.
@TigerNightmare
@TigerNightmare Жыл бұрын
@@bobbuethe1477 He claimed it wasn't about money, but his story is very inconsistent. Zemeckis was frustrated with him while they were shooting the movie because he had all these weird ideas that would be distracting if they went with them, I believe it's mentioned in the commentary. All these claims (and contradictions from them) are from the 2013 Opie & Anthony interview, you can watch a video of it by searching for "Crispin Glover Zemeckis got really mad at me." In the same interview, he said, “I wanted to be in the movie, but the offer was less than half of what Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson - who had similar sized roles - it just wasn’t fair.” I'm not sure what a Part II with more George McFly would look like, but there's no way his part is as big as Tom Wilson's. He said the lawsuit was about people going to him and talking about work in the sequels he didn't do. “If I’d have played that part, I would have played it different. I didn’t like the way that guy played it, and people think it’s me. It’s still gets to me that there’s that confusion.” So a glorified stand-in that has two lines upside down with a bunch of plastic on his face, from behind, or out of focus in the background, he was mad that he could have done _that_ better. When talking about the first film's ending, he starts sounding like a conspiracy theorist, talking about "the banks." He said it was propaganda. Apparently, wealth is bad if it's in fiction, but if you can get several hundred thousand because another actor gets made up to look sort of like you, that's fine. By the way, Jeffrey Weissman, the actor that played George in the sequels, said Glover called him and sounded whiny about how he was treated during the first movie, and that conversation was the basis for winning that settlement, which resulted in Weissman getting blacklisted by Universal. You can read what he said at an old Hasslein Blog interview, which has several behind the scenes photos of Weissman in full makeup, which would be very unconvincing if we actually saw it in the movie.

The sutily on how Biff becomes from just a jerk and bully into a total assassin is one of the things that make this movie even superior to the first one. And i love how they also sutily construct the Marty's issue with the "chicken" stuff to have repercussions for his literal future. Making him a better character and about doc Brown, not just a big passionate scientist but he is such a great friend, he literally came back to save Marty's sons and risk his own life several times for him (as Marty does). This is going to be consolidated in the third one but i love how the entire franchise is not actually about time travel but about how much decitions impact our life and about friendship through (literally) time ❤️

Lil side note: In that scene in Cafe 80s when Marty plays the video game and the two kids say, "You mean you gotta use your hands? That's a baby's toy!" One of those kids is a very young Elijah Wood, who would grow up to play Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings. Also, in the first movie, one of Biff's friends is a young Billy Zane, who would go on to play the villain in James Cameron's Titanic. Oh, and the guy who wished he could go back in the season to put some money on the Cubbies, is the voice of Roger Rabbit, another film my Zemeckis. The guy who played Needles is Flea from the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Western Union guy is a Joe Flaherty, a popular Canadian comedian that has been in all kinds of things. Lots of actors got their start from Back To The Future. "Oh, he sorta looks like a werewolf", um... Michael J Fox was a werewolf in Teen Wolf, which was made roughly about the same time as the BTTF movies. Still love the foreshadowing in the movie. There are all kinds of things to look for. For instance, the trains on Doc's shirt are a clue, and Clint Eastwood's lil cameo from the TV also speaks to what may be coming. Makes you pay more attention on future viewings.

I love how even Old Man Biff has no patience for Young Biff. I never noticed till my kajillioneth viewing of BTTF II how Old Man Biff actually has a lot of self-awareness and mellowed with age, musing at a lot of the absurdities of life going on around him making little side musings and comments to himself chuckling. Even Biff seems to have matured and gotten a sense of humor about things. It isn't till he overhears Doc and Marty's conversation about everything that it ignites that ugly pit that until now had been buried seemingly forever deep down inside within him suddenly reignited to new horrible levels. But, even still, the scenes where he's one on one with his younger self hitting himself with the actual Sports Almanac out of sheer exasperation is pure comedy gold. He has no time (!) for his younger stupid self. One gets the sense if it wasn't himself, Old Biff would beat younger self to death with his kane out of total frustration and recognition that the world is better off without younger him. Young Biff is a necessary evil to older Biff. Turns out, nobody likes young Biff, not even Older Biff and that is hilarious. Give it up for actor Tom Wilson who played all these different timeline Biffs, young, middle aged and old versions, then alternate reality variations of middle aged Biff, old west distant relative Biff, future bionic implant weirdo grandson Biff, and they're all different. All unique and distinguishable. That's masterclass thespian at work all timer right there. Biff and his entire family line are a deplorable lot, but Tom Wilson is no Butt-Head. Mr. Wilson is The Goat.

There was some weird stupid thing with Glover. I really love his character in #1. Too bad he wasn’t in #2 and #3. I can’t believe you noticed it. You notice waaaaaay more things than I ever did. Sometimes you predict upcoming events and I wonder if you’ve seen it already! But you haven’t. Please hurry with #3!!! It’s really good! My dad had 7 coffee shops in Los Angeles: Biff’s. Biff was Tiny Naylor’s son (famous restauranteur). My dad kept the name because he couldn’t get his other name choices approved. Dad bought the restaurants in 1964 and he passed away in 1979, my stepmom had the restaurants until she became ill. So the movie people would have seen and ate at Biffs in Burbank, Encino, Reseda, Santa Monica, van nuys, LA, etc. for years. The matchbook logo is the same. I doubt that my step-brother was paid for the obvious lifting of the logo. I’m not involved or I would have pursued it. 💰 Googie coffee shops is the style. 😂 coconut cream pie, banana cream pie! 🥧

The Biff family lineage is one of the most memorable and iconic "characters" in cinema history, and all three movies DEPEND on that lineage. And if Tom didn't ABSO-FRICKIN'-LUTELY NAIL those roles, these movies wouldn't have worked nearly as well. Dgmw, the entire cast is wonderful, but Tom Wilson is the linchpin of the entire trilogy. And he doesn't get the recognition for this that he deserves. ❤

The one flaw in the continuity is this movie's events don't allow for Biff's gang to put Marty in the trunk. In this version, they split up awhile back and look for him, then spot future Marty and chase him into the dance. But in the first one they have to be with Biff when he pulls Marty out of the car and slugs him, then drag him and put him in the trunk. You'd never know that happened in this movie. Yet it must for him to be playing onstage.

Crispin Glover was replaced by an actor named Jeffrey Weissman for this movie, which is why George McFly doesn't really appear in it apart from in the distance and in that one part with him upside down so as to make it not so obvious that it's a different person. There are differing accounts as to why he didn't return. The producers have said that he asked for too much money to return, but Glover denies this. The real reason was probably because he was unhappy with the ending of the first movie as he felt that it suggested that the moral was that money equals happiness, and he made his dissatisfaction known. He later won a lawsuit against the producers because they used his likeness in the sequels without his permission. Not only did they recast him (which would be fine), but they used the molds of his face from the first movie to create prosthetics for Weissman to convince the audience that Glover was in the movie.
