They really weren't planning to make sequels when they made the first movie. The ending with the DeLorean taking off and flying into the future was only meant to be a funny gag, but everyone just assumes that they had a whole series of movies planned because that's how Hollywood does everything these days. Nowadays, they're always planning out a whole franchise before the first movie even gets released, but that wasn't the case back then. So when the first movie was the biggest hit of 1985, the studio suddenly wanted more movies and approached the original's script writer Bob Gale to return and write them. Gale says that if he knew in advance that he was going to write a sequel, he would NOT have Jennifer get in the car with Marty and Doc. Her presence created problems for the plot, and Gale had to find a way to write around her presence so he could focus on Marty and Doc's roles in the story. That's why she spends most her time in the movie off-screen either asleep or passed out.
@rhonafenwick56438 ай бұрын
And yet somehow, they managed to write two amazing sequels, and tie them in so neatly that the result is probably the best film trilogy of all time. The scriptwriting of all three films is so tight and the callbacks and parallelisms so organic. I wish modern screenwriters paid this much attention to the writing of sequels

@serotokin2 ай бұрын
Even with all of those problems, they managed to make an amazing trilogy, something that is very rare to this day. I always thought that it was because of the pressure insinuated in the directors; after all, most people work better under pressure. In the first film, they had to deal with finding the right main character, budgeting, and deadline. Now in this one they had to make another plot from scratch to tie it in with the first movie, make it nice enough to satisfy the anticipating audiences while also working around the Jennifer issues.

This movie almost predicted when the Chicago Cubs would win another World Series ⚾️. The film said they won in 2015. In reality, the Cubs won in 2016
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar8 ай бұрын
Weirdly, the newspaper says that the Cubs swept Miami “in 5,” implying that in the BTTF universe, MLB abandoned the 7-game format for the World Series at some point, in favor of the 9-game format they originally used in the first few World Series, in the early 20th century. (Also, the Cubs and the then-Florida Marlins would go on to play each other in a rather memorable NLCS in 2003-the one with the infamous Bartman game.)

@@dlspartan2014 No, because what you described wouldn’t be considered a sweep, and the headline said “Cubs *Sweep* in 5,” not “Cubs *Win* in 5.” Of course a best-of-7 series ends once one team wins four games, but by definition, a sweep means that the winning team won every game that was played, so in a best-of-7, a sweep means that only four games were played, with the same team winning all four. Similarly, a three-game sweep can only occur in a best-of-5 series, and a five-game sweep in a best-of-9.

Great reaction guys like always, this one is amazing this might be my favorite trilogy of all time so I love seeing how much you love it! I can't WAIT for you to see Part III. There are some fun facts about this one. This movie was filmed back-to-back with Part III. If you notice they replaced the actress who played Jennifer Parker, Claudia Wells in the original Back to the future, but had to pull out of appearing in Part II after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Elizabeth Shue was cast in the role instead and even re-shot the final scene of the first film, so it could be ‘replayed’ at the beginning of the second. This was Elijah Wood in his very first film role, Wood’s role, as an awed child by the arcade cabinet playing that game with pistols. Crispin Glover who portrais Mcfly Sr in the first one did not apper on this one. According to Glover, he discovered that he was offered far less to reprise his role in any given sequel than Lea Thompson for a similarly sized role, Glover’s agents demanded a higher fee and script approval, and Bob Gale responded by offering even less money than before. As a result, Glover pulled out of the sequel as was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman in heavy prosthetics. This is partly why George McFly is almost always shot in the dark, from behind, or upside-down. One of the more memorable gags about the future occurs when Marty is assailed by a holographic shark outside the cinema (or ‘Holomax’). The Jaws films, in spite of the critically panned Jaws 3-D and Jaws 4, are still going strong in the fictional 2015, marking the nineteenth entry in the franchise. Jaws 19 is directed by Max Spielberg, son of the legendary director. Max was born in June 1985, the ‘present’ era of the trilogy. Actors playing themselves is nothing new - and it wasn’t new in 1989, either. However, this was mostly achieved with clever camerawork and body doubles. Back to the Future Part II broke the mould by using a VFX trick that allowed the same actor to feature twice in the same frame: the ‘Vista Glide.’ As usual, necessity is the mother of invention. Given the number of times characters interact with their past selves, or alternate future selves, or narrowly avoid continuum-obliterating paradoxes, exactly this technique was needed. There are a genuine stunt injury in this film in the hoverboard chase. Due to a technical difficulty with the wires suspending the actors, Cheryl Wheeler-Duncan - the stunt double for Darlene Vogel’s Spike veers off-course and slams into the concrete pillar next to the glass. Ouch! She then falls 30 feet on to the concrete below. Evidently Zemeckis saw a silver lining in this on-set mishap, as that take is the one we see in the film. Keep up the good work.

Crispin Glover's absensce in the movie is actually grounds for a very fascinating lawsuit in Hollywood. He refused to reurn for the role after a money dispute and a number of other things. Because of that, they replaced him with a different actor for use in the future scenes (it's probably also why the actor was upside down, to further obscure his likeness). They used a newspaper photo and archived footage of Glover as McFly without his permission or without compensating him, so he sued Universal and settled out of court. It set a precedent for an actor's control of their image and likeness that actors still enjoy today
@homiedclown3 ай бұрын
Not only that, but they had created a mold of Glover's head in 1985 for the original movie (to create the old age makeup). They re-used this mold to make a mask/headpiece for the new actor (Jeffrey Weissman) to wear, so that he resembled Crispin Glover even more.

2:36 - no idea if anyone already said but no, Lea Thompson is Marty's mom, not Jennifer. Jennifer was recast with Elizabeth Shue, because the original actress who played her had to quit acting and take care of her sick mother, which sucks but at least makes sense. Crispin Glover, who played George McFly in Part 1, was recast because he either wanted more creative control of the role or more money (Glover's reputation as a flighty weirdo is not completely unfounded), so they basically recast him with a lookalike under heavy makeup and kept him in the background and used archive footage of Glover from Part 1 to fill in the gaps; Glover sued them for using his likeness without permission.

For those who actually want to know how it works... In Back to the Future, changing the timeline is not instantaneous - the larger the gap of time that has to change, the longer it will take. In most time-travel stories, as soon as a change is made in the past, the entire timeline of events that followed it is completely erased and replaced with the new eventuality. But that's clearly not how it works in Back to the Future; because if it was, then the moment that Marty pushed his father out of the way of his grandfather's car, thus preventing his parents' first meeting and eventual relationship, Marty would've disappeared almost immediately. No, the way that Back to the Future works, is that time itself is a tangible thing that actually exists; and therefore, it can't just disappear and be replaced instantly. The timeline has to be rewritten: gradually and the longer the gap of time, the longer it's going to take. In Back to the Future, the reason that Marty is the last of the children to be erased, when logically he should've been the first, is because, the new timeline continuity started by Marty's interference, was gradually rewriting the future histories of George and Lorraine, overwriting both Dave's and Linda's existence, before working it's way to Marty. In 2015, when Marty takes Marty Jr's place in the meeting with Griff, Doc has tomorrow's newspaper handy. When the Hoverboarding incident occurs that lands Griff and his gang in Jail, the change was instantaneous, because that paper was only one day away. Now, when 2015 Biff goes back in time to give his 1955 counterpart the Almanac, that is literally 60 years worth of history that has to be rewritten. He had ample time to return to his future in 2015, because the overwriting timeline hadn't reached that far yet. But it had reached 1985 by the time Doc, Marty, Jennifer and Einstein went back. In fact, this is proven thanks to deleted scenes from the movie. See when Old Biff gets back to 2015, he starts acting weak and collapses behind a dumpster in pain. Most people assume this is because he accidentally broke off the top of his cane in the Delorean, and then struck himself in the stomach with it. But a deleted scene proves otherwise; Biff is in-pain, because he's being erased from existence, like Marty was in the first movie. As the Delorean flies back to 1985, the scene shows 2015 Biff fading away. He disappears because, despite his future where he is wealthy and corrupt, he never makes it to 2015 in the new timeline. This would later be revealed why, as it was originally planned that in the Alternate 1985, when Biff corners Marty on the roof, Lorraine was supposed to appear and shoot Biff, killing him, to protect her son. (I honestly kind of wish they'd kept that.) But you see my point - in Back to the Future, the timeline doesn't get "deleted" nor does it get rewritten backwards. Time can only move in one-direction, so therefore, it gradually writes over itself whenever a sequence of events is changed. It explains everything in how Back to the Future works... I'm not saying that this is perfect, because the movie has to take some licenses with it. For example, the book of matches that Marty took from Biff's Tower, the Newspapers both Marty and Doc had from the Alternate 1985, and the Fax that Jennifer took from 2015. In these instances, whenever the timeline is changed, the aforementioned objects change instantly - Biff Co becomes Biff Auto Detailing; George McFly's Murder changed to his Honorarium, Doc being Committed to him being Commended, and Marty's firing being completely erased. We'll have to chalk that up to the movie wanting to have a visual confirmation that the future had been changed. But as for everything else, the logic is sound. Resuming this is a Ripple Effect.

When it comes to Jennifer, Gale & Zemeckis essentially knocked her out because there was literally nothing for her to do, story-wise. They cite her inclusion at the end of the first movie as proof that they never intended to write a sequel. Had they known they were gonna do a sequel, they never would’ve ended the movie with Jennifer in the car with Doc & Marty; these movies are about those two first and foremost, not any of the ancillary characters. Pretty much all the future stuff with Jennifer, Marty jr, etc was done in haste to get to the real point of the movie: the MISUSE of time travel. Zemeckis was on record saying he was reluctant to even go to the future, as it somewhat contradicted the theme of the first movie. But since the first movie was so successful, and people took the ending as gospel/canon, he and Gale knew they had to pay off the ending somehow. As for why she was recast, unfortunately original actress Claudia Wells had dropped out of the industry completely to care for her ailing mother.

12:11 - Say you wanted to have the jacket dry about a half litre of water (two cups, for the weirdos in the corner) from your clothes, then you would need around 10 to 20 fully charged typical smartphone batteries to do the job. Once. Doing it within three seconds without setting the person's clothes on fire would be a challenge.

They did not know they would make a sequel, the scene was a joke and the film makers said if they had planned for a sequel they would have not included Jennifer at the end of the first film as they had nothing to do with her in the sequel.

3:53 - this scene, and the generally poor treatment of Jennifer throughout Part 2, really is a testament to the fact that I truly believe Zemeckis and Gale, the creators of the series, when they have claimed over years they never planned for this to be a trilogy/franchise, and that if they had done they wouldn't have had Jennifer as a tagalong at the end of Part 1 because they had no idea or interest in what to do with her; hence her repeatedly fainting/getting knocked out/getting put to sleep and essentially used as a conflict ball for the first act until they can ditch her back home and have the second half focus on Biff being the main driving force for the plot. Also, not that I blame Elizabeth Shue for taking the role and following the assignment, but I truly have never understood her appeal as an actress during that period of her career. Claudia Wells had way more personality in her 5 or so minutes of screentime in Part 1 than Shue is either able or allowed to muster in both of the sequels combined.

The tall Jennifer was staring against Eric Stolz and had filmed most of the film and wasn't working out. So Michael J Fox was recast. Jennifer in this film because Claudia Wells was dealing with her mother's ending stages of cancer. Lea Thompson is Marty's mother. Marty's father was body doubled. Crispin Glover didn't think it was a good message that the Mcflys were Ritch in the updated timeline. He sued the production company for useing his likeness without his permission. He won his case.

They recast Jennifer because the original actress' mother was dying. She wanted to stay with her in those final moments so she had to drop out. She doesn't regret the decision

The creators said Biff was inspired by Trump ( this was years before he got involved in politics ). They weren't making predictions of the future, just silly ideas for jokes. 50's theme diners were big in the 80's, so they decided in the future it'll be an 80's theme diner. The interactive diner screen with glitchy characters was referencing 80's pseudo AI CGI tv show character "Max Headroom" ( in reality an actor in a mask, computer tech of that time was not capable of it ).

1. It's not often sequels hold up to the original, but this does. Thank you 1980s. 2.IMVHO this one is the best of the trifecta. The next one is inventive but I'm not really into the story. That said, it is the perfect wrap.🤩 3. The stunt woman that flew into the glass window partially missed and injured her arm. 4. Michael J. Fox also played Marty's daughter. 5. Sammy Hagar, "I can't drive 55" 6. Good thing Biff shoots like a Star Wars Stormtrooper🤣 7. The tunnel at the end is the same one they used for Tune Town in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"

What doesn't make sense is they go to 2015 to fix things that happen to their kids, and also the Doc, but how would that change anything once they go back to 1985? Wouldn't the same thing happen? ...or would they have to avoid their "past" selves when the time comes, to not undo what they did? Very confusing.

Notice that the papers don't change until the book is burnt. As long as the book exists, someone -- perhaps Biff even -- will get his hands on it and wreck havoc. Or maybe reality is unpredictable while the book exists.

I said it before and I'll say it again, "Say, hi, to your mom for me." says Biff. Why? Because his mom fell in love with the hurt animal, but you saw how she could be at the "Fish under the sea" dance and so realizing he's a loser she exits the building and is raped by Biff who all leading up to it has been telling her, "You know you want it. You want me to give it to you." She runs back into the "Fish under the sea" dance and now her story to her family is they fall in love because her father was hit by her dad in the car driving home from work and their first kiss was at the "Fish under the sea" dance, because she kissed him realizing he was harmless and worth loving as opposed to being dangerous like the guy who had just raped her. This is why Marty solved the problem. He gave his dad the new scenario of a not easily won love by being struck by a car and then a kiss from a girl just raped. Now dad isn't in the building wondering where his date went. Dad is outside the building practicing the line "Get your filthy hands off her" and so when he opens the car door and sees Biff all the fear comes back, but the training worked. Dad was now a man, right where he needed to be to save his wife and all the adults in the theatre can scream out their joy knowing their kids can't figure out what this movie is about, but the answer is the toughness of the 80s won for the innocence of the 50s for a problem as old as time. The problem being rape of young girls.

Old Biff was actually dying because in the alternate world Loraine eventually shot him, which creates a paradox. If Biff was killed before he became Old Biff how could it affect his alternate universe self? And why would Old Biff be able to go back to his own future? Like Doc said later in the movie traveling into the future after you change the past means you go to that alternate future and not your original one. Also that would mean Old Biff would never be able to steal the time machine and go back and give his younger self the book in the first place
@vincejabroni83388 ай бұрын
But the movie starts with Doc taking Marty and Jennifer from the present into the future. Einstein was gone for a minute during the first movie Delorean test scene, so I would imagine being gone for 30 years would create an alternate timeline. But they didn't arrive in a new future where Marty and Jennifer have been missing for 30 years. Doc said Marty turns out fine, but later that same day, Marty would have gotten into an accident that ruins his life? What? Marty left his timeline before the accident happened, so it makes no sense that future Marty exists and if he does somehow, that he had gotten into the accident in the future the arrive in. The time travel logic is a mess the more they add to it.
@digitaladventurer21428 ай бұрын
@@vincejabroni8338 Yeah but the minute experiment really wouldn't allow for any changes so that would be why nothing would happen but Biff made a massive change like Marty did in the first movie when he made his Dad stand up to Biff. When he went back everything was different meaning he went to an alternate future. So by that logic Biff going back and making the big change of making himself rich means when he went back to the future he should have gone to an alternate future where he was dead and where Marty and Doc never went to the future and thus Marty and Doc should have been stranded in 2015.
