Now I understand why Doc could make a time machine again: He reverse-engineered the Hoverboard, then made another flux capacitor, copied the mechanism of Mr Fusion from the DeLorean that was still buried, and then just made a steam engine. GENIUS!

I like the detail of Marty keeping his eyes open this time as he travels "back to the future". In the first movie, when travelling back to 1985, he completely shuts his eyes, but this time he just squints his eyes against the light and keeps them open, because "that re-entry is a little bumpy."

I mean, the whole thing: the music's just gorgeous - especially the scene where Clara confesses she loves Doc, the action of the scene, the danger. I mean literally, when that last log blows and all heck breaks loose. Doc and Clara are literally hanging on for their lives, with Clara just mere inches from falling under the wheels, Doc trying to get to her, the Delorean literally having its front end lift off the tracks; and meanwhile, the now damaged train is literally barreling down the track out of control, and they heighten the tension by showing the "End of Track" sign, with the train fast approaching its final destination. Then when Doc was able to use the hoverboard to catch Clara and float her off to safety - it was like 😍!! The whole sequence had you on the edge of your seat! Love, love, LOVE it!!!

@RECRUTA 2 RODAS Yes, I also felt it was sad how the DeLorean got destroyed especially since Doc told Marty that inventing a time machine out of a DeLorean was his latest experiment which he's been waiting for all his life and I'm sure that DeLorean felt like a family to him. However, he did mention that he wanted it destroyed but I'm sure he meant disconnecting the time circuits and the fluxcapacitor and then maybe throwing those both in the trash and then maybe park the DeLorean in his house. But I guess with the DeLorean getting completely destroyed breaking into pieces is a way to show that it's completely gone and then Doc won't bel able to travel around to the future and past anymore but stay in his present year. The other sad thing I felt was that I felt that Doc and Marty were never going to see each other again once Doc flew away in his time machine train just because he married Clara and they had two kids (Jules and Verne).

Given how meticulous Doc is with building scale models, I always found it unusual too that he didn't consider the difficulty in trying to board the DeLorean from a speeding train! The other thing I never understood is why they were in such a hurry to catch the train after Buford got arrested. At that point, he was going to jail, so Doc nor Marty were going to get shot. They could use the additional time to further refine their escape plan to 1985, or even catch a totally different train on a much longer track which doesn't involve going over a ravine. They were lucky that Marty got out in the nick of time. I don't know how those engineers would have felt if Marty wasn't able to get out in time and he had been killed along with the DeLorean. No doubt that would feel very guilty if the alternative scenario had happened.

Ironic isn't it? Marty is the only one going back in time. & he thinks he's taking Doc with him. He doesn't go anywhere though. Just stays in 1885 with Clara & continues to work on a new time machine. I would have loved to have seen Doc go back to 1985 with Marty. But why would he build a new time machine that runs on steam if he going to destroy the DeLorean? I think it would have been simple had Marty asked Doc what he was building there in his Blacksmith shop & he told Marty, A simple explanation would have been (Oh I just need to iron out a few kinks.) It actually does raise a few other questions too. He must have something in mind for letting only him & guests of his choosing to go with him. Anyone else probably would've gotten zapped more then likely. Which means one thing, nobody uses the time machine but him Clara or Marty. Old Biff would not be touching this one!

This scene is indeed great and yet it makes me sad. Back to the Future III came out in May 1990, just 5 months into a new decade. It was the only movie with a 1985 storyline that continued into 1990. And while the 80’s ended only five months prior to the movie’s release, this movie really did say, the 80’s are over. Most of us were too young to grasp that reality. By the year 1990, everything 1985 seemed so far gone.

I wonder if Clara hadn't followed them and both Doc and Marty went back to 1985 together as originally planned, would they both have made it out before that train smashed the DeLorean? Imagine a darker ending... they make it back. Marty leaps out at the last second, but Doc was too slow. Marty watches in horror as Doc is dragged to his death by the speeding train.

Doc remembers little details, he told Marty to set the destination time to 11am because he knew a train would be passing through. He knew the crossing guards would be down so they wouldn't get t-boned by someone driving down the street, and the train would destroy the DeLorean like he wanted. There's also some movie time compression at work, you can see the bridge is so far in the background that more time has passed than we see. The problem is Marty is so exhausted it kinda just goes over his head what it means for the crossing guards to be down as he himself is on the track (granted the door refusing to unlock doesn't help, which was am actual problem for that car.) If Doc had made it in, he'd have nudged Marty on the shoulder and told him they had to get out as soon as the car had slowed down enough, before the train was even in sight.
