Hi Michelle, that pinging sound that you're hearing is definitely not the engine do not worry. It's 100% in the centrifical clutch. I'm not sure how sawmills work whether there is an adjustment, but it's definitely not the motor. We had mini bikes as kids and they made that exact same pinging sound and it never hurt them. Keep up the great videos!!!!!

Hello Michelle, I enjoyed watching your video. I like to pull this plastic seal off of bearings, with a sharp pick , re-grease them by hand, and reinstall the cover. I do this on lawnmower, pulleys, idler pulleys on the front of cars. It keeps me from having to run into town and buy new bearings on my lawnmower, mower deck. I actually had to inject grease through a 18 gauge hypodermic needle through the plastic into the bearings, I just want them to last forever

The pinging that is being referred to in the engine manual is pre detonation pinging, not clutch pinging. The retention springs in the clutch assy are most likely your clutch pinging issue... a new clutch assy is really cheap and easy to install. There could be piece of debris inside the housing that's making it try to grab prematurely also.

I definitely see a sawmill shed in the future with all that water and clean up. And if you had a toe board Jack to raise the center of the log up so that it's even with the big end, that's the only way to go... And then there's Clyde you got to love that ball of his, when he gets that sent all of a sudden he lets out that ball... they must be getting a collage of smells and he's just enjoying that sent so much it's like so good, it would be neat if they had a scent detector that could tell us exactly what it is😊 Anyway I love your little excursions with finding Clyde. I think you would really enjoy that sawmill shed it makes working on the mill and all parts involved more enjoyable.

Add a lock washer to the sawmill legs and it will not back out. Or the easiest way is a couple drops of lock tight blue. Red requires heat to move it. Also they sell a plug for oil that you attach a hose to it and when you loosen the nut it will let the oil flow. I have a lot of experience in construction, heavy equipment, any mechanic work and a ton of other things. I don’t mind pointing you in the right direction if you have a issue.

Just a thought or two... either as the clutch warms up it expands and 'catches' (pinging), and too low an idle may cause higher vibration/rattling also low oil pressure (the lack of good oil circulation ) will wear your motor out sooner too... Waving from Melbourne Australia

Hi Michelle. Enjoying my Sunday morning coffee with you. So...the Kohler manual is talking about engine noises. Engine pinging which is different from the noise you are hearing. Your saw's noise sounds like a centrifugal clutch noise. Can't quite see it from here in Ontario...I'm even squinting, but some of those can be lubricated. I'd check with your manual about any clutch servicing requirements. Nice to see you. Looking forward to your boat adventure.

Your clutch may have had some "flash" rust on the wear surfaces from storage, that can cause a friction issue until it clears off from use. It may be beneficial to saw a few logs, then reevaluate the "pinging". Also I think the pinging your manual is referring to would be an ignition pinging, that can be caused be a "lean" fuel mixture. As always, I enjoyed the video, and I'm sure you realize, Clide knows what/who he found.... the nose knows! lol have a nice day Dear!

Oh, the drain plug on the engine is a pipe thread fitting, maybe 3/8". Short pieces of pipe are referred to as "nipples" (don't know why, just accept it and move on😊) and come in various lengths starting with "close" and then increase by 1/2" increments. Select a length long enough to put the drain in the clear without getting in the way of anything else, then add a street elbow (female pipe thread by male pipe thread elbow with male end pointing down) and use a pipe cap instead of a plug. The nipple can serve as a support on which to rest the bail of a small pail, capable of holding the engine oil, and the bottom of the elbow being male, with the threads on the outside, will allow the oil to drain out smoothly without being obstructed by thread on the inside as it would be if using a standard elbow. Love the channel and look forward to every episode.

Good morning Mitch i was surprised when you mention sawing with Sandy i listen to him regularly and i already went through a cluth but when i saw his video about the bing i listen to my mill with extra attention and sure enough there was a bing since your mill was a sleep for the winter you should cut a few logs to make sure the gas go through it really good and warm up and then you adjust the idle when you turn that screw no more than a 1/16 to1/8of turn at a time and then reve it a little then let it settle down again and see how it does if i am more rhen tree weeks of not using my mill sometime the idle will be a little difficultfor a log or two then it settle back to normal well good luck with it and have a great day

the newer mills from woodland have a tube installed on the oil drain that extends it out and makes oil changes alot less messy!! I'd contact them they would ship you one no problem..also the pinging sound your hearing is your clutch starting to engage because the idle is to high. the idle stop screw is located on top the carb, kinda hard to see, but you are right on track ;)

I see lots of advice on your sawmill issues. Some pretty good. You do need jam nuts on the bottom of the single nut holding up your track. The top nut above the track could use a lock washer or NyLock nuts. The bushing in the clutch bell is wearing a bit. (Clutch mfg won't use the best bushings. They want to sell more clutches. Same thing with the spring & shoes inside) A remote oil drain will be easy to make.. just as long as it doesn't interfere with other parts. ( your mill already has motor alignment issues ) A preventive maintenance issue would be to glue a strong magnet to the bottom of your fuel tank. This will capture any rust that winds up in your fuel before it plugs fuel filter or carb jets.

I once had a Border Collie I got as a retired herd dog. Well I didn't have any herds of anything, but there were herds of deer that traveled through our property. So she would disappear for days and until I noticed that it would be at the same time I would have a deer trail appear in my yard I didn't know why she would run off. Once I figured it out I decided to re-home her with a friend that raised sheep. She finally had her job back and was happier than I could have ever made her. All she needed was a herd of 5 -10 to watch over, protect and move around. One day, 3 years later my friend called me to tell me she had passed. He told me he had found her in the sheep enclosure with her sheep surrounding her little lifeless body as if today they were protecting her.

Michy- add a second nut under the first nut that supports each post under the sawmill rail. Set elevation with the top nut, then hold it with one wrench and tighten up the lower nut with a second wrench. This will become a jam nut and together they “won’t back down” (sounds like another song).😅

@@michygoss7148 To Pat’s point, adding the second nut directly underneath the original should resolve the issue with the nut walking down (likely from vibrations). While you’re at the hardware store getting supplies for the oil drain setup, you should consider bringing one of those nuts with you, so you could purchase some identical ones. Either way, good luck!

centrifugal clutches work on that. A slow rpm allows parts in the clutch to relax therfore stuff is loose, higher rpm springs are tensioned to engage friction materials to allow for positive motion in the drive assembly. direct drive is pretty quite. everything is tight and right

Hi Michelle; If the centrifugal clutch is engaging with that sound at low rpm, you may want to check that the spring holding the clutch together isn't broken. If it is broken, the clutch would engage at low rpm. It happens on chainsaws a lot. The chain would still be moving at idle speeds with the brake off.

You can get a kind of giant syringe to suck out the old oil through the filler plug. It's a small motor and looks as though there will be only one or two litres. I'm pretty sure the pinging isn't anything to do with fuel, but something about the centrifugal clutch.
@iblkn2

The clutch has needle bearings the outer part rides on. They don’t get new grease unless you diss assemble. A couple of drops of 90w oil on the outboard side occasionally might help. The slower the idle the greater the space from the centrifugal weights increasing the volume of the ring. The manual is referring to pre ignition of the engine. Different kind of ping. The clutch is showing some wear.

Another great episode in your journey, thanks Michelle. Keep an eye out for Kevin’s Saws-ma-hall project on the Modern SelfReliance channel. It may offer some insight into a future project structure for your saw that will eliminate the need to bail water out before tarp removal. That is quite a stream on your property; is it close enough to the house to capture some hydroelectric power? Wishing you and your furry pack a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings. Peace princess.

I’ve been watching his build!!! He doesn’t get near as much snow as we do though, so while it is possible to build something like that, I just don’t know how much milling I will actually do in winter. Dunno. Never say never.

The engine manual won't (at least I don't think) cover the centrifugal clutch. That may be addressed in the saw manual. Also, centrifugal clutches typically rely on a spring/springs to keep the shoes retracted at low rpm. Over time the springs can rust or become weak from heat associated with heavy use and that can cause premature engagement (pinging). You may want to consider getting a backup as it probably will be cheaper and easier to find now than later, and it will wear out eventually, how fast depends on the loads and hours used. It is after all, a wear item. You're very good at the maintenance, inspection and repair! You're looking great as always 😍! Hi to the pooches!

the pinging you were reading about in the manual is referencing the valve train. nothing to do with the clutch. the pinging you're hearing is mostly likely lateral wobble from clutch looseness or imbalances in the rotating mass of the clutch, which would be accentuated by lowering the rpm (but it's not a big deal). net net - set the idle to a reasonably low level and get to milling and don't worry about low idle pings.

The pinging the manual speaks of is in the engine, and not the clutch. Pinging occurs when the engine is not timed properly. Timing has nothing to do with the idle speed. Timing controls when the spark occurs, and it is typically controlled with either points within a distributor cap, or by an engine computer/ignition module. Changing the idle will not change the timing of the engine. The ping you are hearing is within the clutch, as you said. The clutch is usually centrifugal, and is controlled by the speed of the pully driving it. The centrifugal clutch usually has a couple springs in it, that allow the plates to engage and drive the bandsaw. As the clutch is driven faster, the springs stretch, allowing the plates to come in contact with each other. Maybe a spring is overstretched, loose, or coming off? A new clutch would probably fix the noise, but as long as it's working, I wouldn't mess with it.

6:10 the pings they are referring to in that section isn't the clutch,, it's from low octane fuel in an engine that needs high octane, that isn't your problem and also that yellow oil cap is mainly to fill the engine, the drain is the small plug in the center of the base of the engine, you can get an add on to screw in there to make oil changes much easier.

1. Equipment that sits outside, even if covered, can collect rust over the winter months. Centrifugal clutches are prone to this, as they tend to polish up the metal surfaces during use and then will easily rust during periods of idleness. It is just surface rust and is nothing serious, but it does then to make a clutch more "grabby" because the rust provides more friction than the smooth polished metal of the clutch when the machine is regular use. Just run the machine under load for a short while and the rusty part will polish back up and then you can make any adjustments that are needed. 2. this kind of goes hand in hand with #1. Carburetor adjustments should only be made when the engine is up to operating temperature. This because the engine responds differently to the fuel/air mixture when it is cold as opposed to when it is warmed up. 3. The sawdust covered cute tushy shots must be the Canadian version of the sand covered tushy shots of locales further south.😉
