There are a couple of ways to install and wire a back up camera system. We go through the different methods and explain the pro's and cons of each method. Then we take you through the process of removing the taillight and how to test for power. We explain vehicles with light control modules and the problems they pose. Then we make the connection at the taillight to a back up camera system. We recommend using a relay whenever wiring a back up camera system to isolate the system from the light control modules. You can simply trace out that backup light wiring in your fuse box there by saving you the time to run the wire from the back of the vehicle to your radio, its how i did my Ford Escape. relay was still necessary. Thanks for sharing.

For the DIY market, no visual example of the red wire connection to the positive wire of the reverse light. Do you trim and splice, solder, or put in a clip? I guess I'll trim the wire, wrap, spot solder and use heat shrink insulation, since there's nothing specific here.

Thanks for the useful video. I connected my camera just to the RCA connector and the reverse cable at the back of my HU and it works fine. I guess it gets power from RCA cable and signal from canbus. Is that ok and safe or I still need to connect positive and negative to the reverse light?

Hello, you channel is very helpful so as you videos. I was have a little problem today with reverse camera. I was connect everything and i was located a riverse light. On my car Peugeot 407 tails light have a one connector for all lights (stop, fog lamps, blinkers, position....) and have a only one ground(yellow-green) wire and its connected on chassis. I was located the reverse light wire and connect red wire of camera on that wire and black wire on metal piece on trunk lock mechanism. When i was in reverse the displey was dead. Something was burn and all is dead. I Don't know what i was do wrong, only thing can be that so i wasn't put ground on the ground of tail light. What do you thing, what was wrong.

I'm having problems with the wiring on my 2003 Windstar because of the Rear Electronic Module. When you talk about wiring in a relay, is there a way to run the relay off of the reverse light wires, or are you saying that you have to control the camera manually with a switch you put somewhere.

Eric, you will wire the relay so that the electronic manual controls the relay. These modules output AC and create problems for DC electronics.

Yes you can, however; we do not recommend that method especially in newer vehicles due to the light control module. Most monitors have a trigger wire that you will connect to the reverse light and this provides the signal to turn the monitor on.

I have a Pioneer AVH X2800BS head unit in a 2012 Toyota Tundra. Can I run a single power wire from the purple wire (back up camera wire) from the head unit to the reverse brake light power wire? Shouldn't this power and trigger my camera in reverse if the RCA is plugged into the back of the head unit?

On a head unit with back up camera input this is the correct way to do it, you will need to wire the camera to accessory power so that you can view the camera anytime, like when towing a trailer.

Hi I am looking to wire my reverse camera to my cars reverse lights. The first time I tried it, i think i grounded the wire wrong which the caused my alternator to become defective and cause the check air bag and abs warning light to come on. It also made the Blowers turn off. Do you think this was caused by me because only a week before my car was being worked on at a body shop in which they had left the ignition on for hours without having the actual engine running. I am looking to give it another attempt but am scared because i don't want to dish out alot of money having the alternator replaced again.

We are trying to hook up a camera to our daughter's AVH-X45800BS, but it came with NO instructions. We placed the RCA in the back of the stereo. We did NOT hook the red wire coming off of it to anything, although we have a purple reverse wire on the harness. At the back the black cable connects with a pin connector NOT AN RCA, then there are 2 wires (red and black) that are coming off of. We connected the red to the backup light and the black we grounded to the vehicle (04 Jeep Liberty Renegade). Although the picture changes to camera view when you put the car in reverse, the picture is BLACK. Where did we go wrong?

+EyesOffManOnTheWORD More that likely the vehicle you have has a light control module that is actually outputting AC instead of DC. You will more than likely need to use a relay to actually output DC. Temporarily connect the power lead of the camera to the battery and see if everything works. If it does, install a relay.

However, it was assumed that your viewer would know how to use and interpret a multimeter reading. As an electrician it's my experience that a lot of electricians don't know how to use a multimeter, let alone the normal public. Also I got no wiring instructions. Did I miss another video?

Your vehicle is likely a newer one and the light control module is a PWM unit and causing this. The only other possibility is you did not unplug the bulb when you tested the reverse lead and actually have the ground side.

Hello there, aloha everyone! need some help here if any? I got one of those camera, and ive installed it, followed every single instruction for installation! I have a alpine ive head unit with a reverse trigger, i connected the camera power source to the reverse back up light, and the reverse trigger from the head unit to the + reverse back up light! In the morning is fine camera works ok, powers on when switch the gear to reverse and triggers the head unit to show the back up camera, but the problem is at night, yes! Its When i turn on the tail lights and step on the brake pedal, my head unit triggers to camera even gear is not on reverse, there is no image since camera on powers when i put the gear on reverse! So yeah at nigh when i turn on the tail lights and every time i step on break this happens, it triggers my head monitor in reverse, i tried and check all the wirings, and even replace all the tail light, brake signal light bulb new, but its weird when i remove one of the brake light bulb and turn the tail lights on and step on brake its doesnt trigger my head unit monitor to reverse,! Is there anything im missing? Really need help, thank u in advanced, mahalo!

Hi, I have installed my back up camera successfully and it is recording at all times. I don't think I did a good job on wiring my positives to the back up light, so I'm not sure if that is the reason why my parking assist doesn't show up. It's just a plain video of my front and back up camera once i turn my car on. I pretty much just plug the positives into the connector to form a hook instead of using a wire splicer. Do you think my camera just doesn't come with a parking assist function or did I do something wrong when I set it up?? Thanks a bunch!

That usually means a white stripe on a black wire.
