Sir Elton John is about as good as anyone can get. He has won every award and an Oscar for best song and soundtrack with Ted Levine for the Lion King. The man was a trendsetter and rule breaker. A self-made man for sure. His musical collection is very extensive and crosses genres. In 71 he was on the verge of greatness. The song was originally recorded in 69. I remember getting his first greatest hits album for my 13th birthday! I was hooked. Simply put, the man is a legend and lives up to all and any hype. Captain Fantastic!

You really need to go and look back at Elton's career, it's an amazing journey. The first Elton song I bought was "Crocodile Rock" as a 45 which started my collection of all his albums through the '70's and '80's. Elton works with his musical partner Bernie Taupin, Bernie writes the lyrics and then Elton writes the music. what an amazing duo they are. Like Billy Joel, Elton is a "piano man"

@@betsyduane3461 No he didn't. lol He got his lyrics from several songwriters/poets, most notably Roger Christian, a local DJ acquaintance. Brian would call Roger up saying he needed a song, and the two men would meet up and Roger would give Brian the lyrics. Brian would then race home and write the music to accompany the lyrics. This happened over and over again, with Roger co-writing many Beach Boys songs--including two of my favorites, "Little Deuce Coupe", and, "Don't Worry, Baby", which I believe to be the Beach Boys best song ever.

Sir Elton John has been performing since 1969 and recently had a No.1 single, a duet with Dua Lipa, in the UK. I have seen him 6 times in concert and to me he is one of best performers/songwriters of all time. A remarkable musician who pays it back in the fostering of new musicians on his Rocket radio hour with Apple Music as well as his philanthropic endeavours with AIDS and other charitable causes. 'Your Song', from the self title album from 1970, is a brilliant melody which helped him break into the US charts. This early period of his I find to be most rewarding. My favourite album is 'Tumbleweed Connection' yet 'Elton John', 'Madman Across the Water' and 'Honky Chateau' are equally as good. I do hope you explore these.

I agree with you on Ewan McGregor's rendition. I like it better than Elton's. While not a popular opinion, I feel that the way Ewan paces and phrases the lyrics fits better with the music. Elton's always seemed a bit abrupt with the phrases, like he was rushing the words so he could focus on playing.

This is the theme song for the sad and romantic movie called “Going Home” with Kris Kristofferson. A heartwarming story of a Vietnam Vet who was married and became a POW during the war but everyone thought he was killed in action. He came home after so many years and found he had a son and his wife remarried. The reunion with both son and wife was saddened since his wife still loved him but also her present husband. In the end he didn’t get her back but became a part of their family. Great movie.

Fun fact, Elton John (Real name; Reg Dwight!) Born on a council estate in London poor, but was a virtuoso on the piano could play anything by ear Classical Pieces at 3 years old flawlessly like Bach and Beathoven etc.. but once he heard Blues and Boogie Woogie, Jazz and Modern Piano he got into pop music! He writes all his music and his writing partner Bernie Taupin something or other writes the lyrics so he writes a tune and his mate writes lyrics to it.. been the same his whole career they've ALWAYS worked together exclusively as far as I know solid writing team. He's also The Director of a fairly major Football(Soccer) Club, here in England that he's been a life long fan of since he was a kid! Top man and he is talent! Proper English National Treasure. You need to review "candle in the wind" Great Classic Song! (He wrote that about Marylin Monroe!!) He also did a rewrite of the lyrics specifically for and played live at Princess Diana's Funeral in the church service) as they were close friends! And another great song he did was "Guess that's why they call it the Blues" also a good tune! He's had loads tbh.. but these are Good ones! Cheers from London England 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I had a friend who had a friend that worked at the "Loss Leaders" of Reprise/WEA records. They built compilations of obscure recordings, mostly artists covering lesser known works of other artists. On one of the LP's he gave to me was a recording of this song, but not from Elton John, instead, by the group Bread. Equally, if not more so, as beautiful as John's. @@brucedillinger9448 The only place I have seen it is on that LP. These albums weren't really sold. For the most part they were given to those in the industry, just as my friend's friend acquired it. Imagine David gates singing it. I do wish I still had it, along with all my other LPs from the time. I left over 300 LPs, my Kenwood 600C amplifier, Technics 1200 turntable, 2 AR10 bookshelf speakers and 2 Bose 201 bookshelf speakers when I left Hawaii because I had no clue where I was going. I figured they would all be relatively easy to replace, but CDs happened instead.

This was his first big hit, his breakthrough. Very quickly his career took off in USA, the 70s megastar.

Have always loved this song! And having someone write a song for you is one of the greatest gifts. Have a lifelong best friend who is a musician and travels the country playing small clubs and festivals. Twice he's called me from the road to play a song written about me. One of them is now set on his setlist. Better then any other gifts he purchased for me.

His first hit. This & Benny & the Jets - my favorites. I was 11 or 12 when this came out, it touched me. His voice was so great when he was young. It’s beautiful.

The drummer in this video, Nigel Olsson, is still in the Elton John Band, as of 2021. He was fired for two or three years in the latter 1970s, but has been back in the fold ever since.

Playing and singing at the same time is such an underrated skill. Executing one set of rhythms with your hand while singing another is so GD hard. It’s like “pat your head and rub your tummy” x10 for me. But you’re right, when you’re doing it well it’s because you’re not thinking, the second you think about what comes next you mess up. Or, at least I do. 😇🤣

The group Three Dog Night recorded this song before Elton John. Reportedly Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to "Your Song" sitting at Elton's mother's kitchen table. It's a beautiful love song.
