True story alert: In early 2013, my 17 year old cat that I got when she was 2 was having health issues. In March of that year, I went to set my alarm before bed, and the part of this song "How wonderful life is while your in the world" played. I looked for my cat, and I found her deceased and still warm, under my bed. She is dearly missed, but I was blessed with my son 14 months later. God works in mysterious ways. Love you Jay and Amber. It's amazing that this timeless classic was penned, music and lyrics, in about an hour or so at most. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics over breakfast, handed them off to Elton at the piano, went upstairs to have a shave, and by the time he was done, Elton had written the music from top to bottom. They knew the moment they wrote it that it was something special. The public certainly agreed, since it was their first major hit single (Top 10 in both the US and the UK in 1970 and 1971, respectively). While the lyrics were definitely about the girl Bernie was seeing at the time, "Your Song" has grown to mean far more than that since then. It has become Elton's dedication to his fans. In the more than 4000 concerts Elton has performed in his career, there has barely been a show where he hasn't performed "Your Song". In fact, there's a fantastic video compilation of Elton performing it throughout the decades. It's well worth a watch, if only for the incredible array of costumes he's worn for his concerts.
@johnjsal2 жыл бұрын
That's crazy. I've always heard a lot of musicians say that they almost always write music before the lyrics. It's amazing that Taupin can write lyrics without even knowing how it's going to sound! Unless maybe he does have some idea? I'm not sure what his exact process is.
@robdaviesprogm2 жыл бұрын
@@johnjsal generally speaking, Bernie has no idea what Elton is going to write. It wasn't until later on that Bernie had any sort of musical experience whatsoever. In fact, when they first started writing together, Bernie didn't even structure his lyrics with any sort of verse/chorus/etc. Elton would have to figure that out what the chorus was going to be himself, if there even was going to be a chorus! That's how you got such atypical structures like you hear in early songs like "Sixty Years On", "The Greatest Discovery", and "Tiny Dancer". The "lyrics first" approach is unusual, though I've used it quite a bit myself, probably because I was so strongly influenced by Elton. From what I understand, Bernie just comes up with an idea and starts writing. For Elton, he says when he reads Taupin's lyrics, "a little movie plays in [his] mind", and out come the chords. Usually, if he doesn't get the music in an hour, he comes back to it later or abandons the lyric altogether. It's worth noting that while lyrics usually came first with Bernie, Elton has written music first with other writers, and on occasion with Bernie. Two John/Taupin songs where the music came first are "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Gary Osborne, with whom Elton wrote mainly during the period of 1978-82, wrote lyrics to Elton's music, often fleshing out lyrical ideas that Elton had come up with.

Thank you for the clear explanation about the songs and team Elton John/Bernie Taupin! It's very fascinating how some artists can write songs. It's something magical they have in them, that, to our great joy, comes out into the world. Indeed, in interviews and articles I saw that many writers first have the main musical lines on which they write lyrics. It can be a real work in progress, as you can see in the video Queen - The making of “One Vision”. Sometimes it's pure luck. The melody for "You Win Again" came to Barry Gibb in a dream. And when The Doors only had a few lines to the music of "Peace Frog", they filled out the rest with lyrics from three poems previously written by Jim Morrison.

The reason this one is "broken down" as Jay has described it is because you're listening to a live performance. The studio version, which was released as the single, has a full string section behind him, which I suspect was replaced in this live performance by a synth. "Your Song" was his debut single when we first learned of him in 1970. A huge hit, and for my money, perhaps his best song. He had so many other great ones through the years, but I'm not sure there was ever one any better. If you ever want to just throw an album on and let it track, listen to his "Tumbleweed Connection" album. Just lay back and enjoy.

Elton wrote a Broadway show called Aida. The star of that show, Heather Headley, won a Tony award for her performance. When Elton won the Kennedy Center Honor, Heather sang Your Song in tribute to him. It's a stunning version and Elton was very moved. If you want, you should definitely do a reaction to her version. It's worth it.

I feel like this song has been in the background of my life as long as I can remember - to the point I maybe lost touch with how powerful it is. Thank you for reminding me.

This has always been my favorite Elton John song but when my mom died of cancer in 2016 it completely changed meaning for me ..

If you want to see Elton's playing at its finest (IMO), check out "Madman Across The Water" live 1971. So much sound from just 3 guys. Piano, bass & drums. Awesome performance.

One of the best albums ever. I saw him at the Greek Theater in L..A. just before "Madman" came out. He did the whole album as an encore. Unbelievable!

I saw Elton John in concert at Lincoln Theatre Royal, UK, circa 1974. The billing was Emerson Lake and Palmer supported by Elton John.

Makes me cry when I hear it as I lost two friends. One passed at 14ys old in 1977. The other was my childhood friend that played this song on the piano when we were kids. She passed in 2013. Love this song as it reminds me of both of them so much! That's the wonderful thing about music..❤️

You HAVE to hear his duet with George Michael on "Don't let the sun go down on me". It's a live performance and it is epic.

Along with being my favorite Elton John song, this is actually my favorite all-time song. Absolutely beautiful. And, it is amazing that one Bernie handed him the words, it only took him like 20 minutes to write the music to it.

This is very early film of Elton. so cool to see. The guy was an absolute hit machine and master of pop and rock from 1970-76.

As you are into Elton John and his great, heart-felt lyrics, you should react to some Neil Diamond. Amazing singer songwriter- some to get you stated "I am I said" "Play me" "Yesterday's Songs" "September morn" "Love on the Rocks (album version, not cut down video-promo version) "Longfellow Serenade" "Forever in Blue Jeans"

Don't forget that Bernie Taupin was (is?) Elton's main lyricist.

Elton John didn’t write lyrics…. Bernie Taupin did, Elton worked out the tunes.

Emotions running for me. I was 11 and my parents decided to divorce. Such a long time ago, but when I hear this song it all comes back. Music is so powerful.

Sacrifice by Elton John. So good, and gorgeous to dance to.
