I think the best thing I did was taking the plunge and try some graphite shafts. I could not hit them at all in demos because I was used to 130g shaft. After a few days practicing I had a feel for them. Less shock, easier to sense clubhead, they fly straight and my bag is a pound lighter. 🙂 I would never have been fit into them in one session.

That's exactly why I don't want to get fit, but I am not a clueless golfer. I know my swing speed, I check the club when it lies on the ground, I see if it fits well, if it feels well. Fitting is the new thing, with bicycle, it is the same thing, I have been studying so much about both sports, I prefer using my feelings, I make micro adjustment on my road bike, I called myself Mr milimeter. I have tried many golf clubs, because my swing speed is not great (I am a senior at 53), I was looking for distance, I found the dream club this winter: The Super game improvment Titleist T400, (very expensive, but I got a super deal on used version that looks like new, left handed).

I am a clubfitter and except for the 2nd hand advice ( we don't sell 2nd hand ) you're telling exactly what my advice is to my clients . Another mistake often made is choosing steel shafts when someone has problems with joints back etc. and not going for graphite because the average golfer thinks they are too whippy not knowing that the flex has nothing to do with the material. As for putters , I think 90% of all golfers should play with some form of Mallet , but never go for a putter you hate to look at , so many different mallets there's bound to be one you like looking at and feels good.

I personally chose to adapt to my clubs. It motivates me to keep practicing until I can master clubs that are considered “less forgiving”. For me it seems like the only way to improve, and it’s pretty satisfying playing a decent round. But to each their own!

I am heading to Florida tomorrow where I plan to have a complete fitting and gapping analysis - Driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges, and putter. This is great advice, thank you mate. I'm 64 and have played all my life, except for a 20 year hiatus, and feel like I can improve my handicap from a current 3.2 to scratch with a proper fitting. My main goal is to add distance since my accuracy and solid contact is not a big problem. I currently play off the white tees but would love to go back to hitting off the blues when I was younger.

I am an older golfer. I made the mistake of buying a set of Mizuno blades because I didn’t want to go to my deathbed thinking to myself “I really wish I had a nice set of golf clubs“ however, the golf club were much better than Iam as a golfer. The upside was, I could tell right away when I did not hit the center of the club face. The downside was, I rarely hit the center of the face. I traded my blades in on a set of clubs that were much more forgiving and much more in line with my ability as a player. Now I enjoy golf a little more.

Bought a starter set about 40 years ago. Used it for about 25 years then had to stop playing (work commitments). Traded it in three years ago when the pro at the driving range watched me for a few minutes and told me I should consider getting something with graphite shafts and newer technology,. Wish I would have sprung for a fitting at that time. Am planning on a fitting later this month with one of the manufacturers that's going to be at one of my local golf courses. I may not buy anything at that time, but knowing what shaft and lie angle will go a long ways towards finding something that works best for me.

One of the biggest differences in my game happened when I first took lessons a few years ago. My fist lesson, my coach check my lie angle and adjusted my irons and wedges for me after my first lesson. I gained yardage and accuracy. Since then I’ve gotten all new clubs, and went through fittings for everything. It cost a little money and a bunch of time, but the impact it’ll make on you game is unreal! Everything Alex said in this video comes true once you’re fitted for clubs. I’m a decent, 11.2 handicap, player and I went for forgiving everything! I watch to many people struggle with hard to hit equipment, and I didn’t want to do that. I’ve gone down 5 strokes on my handicap since. I can’t recommend it enough if you want to take the game seriously and have serious goals for your game. Also get fitted for a ball and stick with it! Again if you’re going to take the game seriously then play the best ball for your game.

The ball issue is the one thing I have not nailed down yet. I have loads of golf balls, for Xmas I got Kirkland’s I asked for and like, I also got the Cue? from Costco and I have TP5’s these I won’t play till spring and the course starts to dry out a bit. Over winter I am using lots of other brands found balls etc. I’m 24 h cap but close to breaking 90 a few times now, rarely lose a ball but there are two holes on the course that cause me issues where going right can be OOB. Srixon seems to be the one brand I can guarantee a lost ball prov1 any callaway go ok.

@adamh9271 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what your goals are. If your goal is to just be an average weekend golfer who wants nothing but to keep up and maybe beat his buddy at golf here and there then yes you need more forgiving clubs. However, if your goal is to improve your game to the point that you become a pro or close to it, you need to learn with the thin blades and low loft less forgiving woods. If you don't practice with them, you won't get better at them. Then when you eventually get to that level there is a big learning curve with a new set of clubs while you are trying to compete instead of when you weren't good enough for anyone to notice.

My biggest mistake buying clubs was when I let the sales associate talk me into A-flex shafts on a new set of irons. This was 20 plus years ago. I did pick up some distance, but never knew where the ball was going. Went to another store years later and the sales associate was flabbergasted that I would be fitted with an A-flex shaft. Fitted me with regular shafts, and maintained distance with a much more predictable ball flight. Those clubs (Callaway X-22) lasted 12 years. Recently purchased a new set of Taylormade Stealth with, you guessed it, regular flex shafts. They hit soooooo good!

Yea, thats a problem for me was well. When you test clubs, its usually only possible to test them on mats where I live. Its a huge difference to real grass though, I almost always hit it good from the mat but have a huge tendency to duff my shots on the course, especially if its wet. I also found hitting 3Woods, 5Woods so much easier on the mat compared to grass, and if you practise too much on the range on mats it can be bad for your game on the course.

Never been fitted but I figured out what my game needs from research. The only second hand set I bought has the wrong flex, too short but the grooves at the time was immaculate. I am saving to buy some new irons but I am already in the trap of looks over requirement. But the 101Ts be damn sexy for some hollow body irons with standard loft. Putters, I don't know but gimme a putter and a week and I'll make it work. Wedges I got second hand the groves were good. Immediately sharped them because I love me some spinny wedges on some fast as grease greens. Driver....... Got an SLDR with a Accra Tour RPGZ shaft and used it till the face caved. Kept the shaft and changed the sleeve and head to a Titleist 915D2 i got from a local course dumpster. Serves well so far. On that note (sorry this comment is so long already.) If you are going second hand and never been fitted, you can use a distance to ball speed calculator to see what flex shafts "may" best fit you. Works from driver to to low irons. Just a thought.

I am a golf instructor and a club fitter. About blade iron, there are more good than harm if you understand its characteristics. I encourage all of my customers and students to play blades and the result are amazing. They all love it. Most of them play better compared with their old trusty cavity back iron set. The only problem with blade is not about the design. It’s how it has been built. If you build it with proper specs i.e. shaft weight, flex and length, i can guarantee you that it is as easy as cavity back. Stop blaming just the design of the head, it’s the spec that make you able to swing the club or not. Think about it, wedge is the easiest club to swing in the bag, do y’all notice that its design is a BLADE. PS: this is just for iron head. Driver head is a different story.

Quick tip for all golfers that are not single digit handicaps. Buy the cheapest balls available even free practice balls as the ball only makes a difference if you are striking it perfectly and compressing the ball. $5/ball is too much to throw away every couple holes as golf is expensive enough lol. Love you guys 🤙❤️
@codycook3382 Жыл бұрын
Not true at all! Why on earth would I buy a ball that performs and feels like shit, whether I hit it pure or misfit it? You don't have to buy the most premium balls, but don't expect to get much better if you are playing with garbage balls that don't spin! Golf is, was, and always will be expensive. If you can't afford decent golf balls, maybe stick to mini golf or top golf style ranges.

I bought a set of TM LCG Burners in the late 90's with tour stiff shafts and included a 1 iron as well. I was young and fast enough to get them going and had some early 'success' but even though they were cavity backed they were not the most forgiving if you were not swinging with confidence. Since then I have only had two sets of irons (in 25 years) as I got them fitted and they just worked for me, in fact only changed them the last time as they were getting worn out ! Luckily I am standard loft and lie with a shaft option that is light stiff now so not hard to find options.

I have an old Mizuno Fly Hi I hit great. Tried a Titleist utility a couple years ago and could not hit it. Better off with a hybrid or 7/9 wood.

I'm reasonably new, but bought some JPX 919 forged irons on the basis that they had some forgiveness bit also something I could improve into. I bought second hand so no idea about lie angle or anything like that. They feel amazing when they are hit right.

While I agree with your premise of playing the proper clubs, I have found that clubs that could help me look so horrible standing over the top of them I don't feel confident that I can hit a good shot. Even today's blades are so thick up top, but they are better than the majority of clubs. I went from MP-20 to MP-20 MMC with 4 & 5 JPX 921 HMP for a little more forgiveness, but I am contemplating going back to the full blade just for aesthetics. Alex, What are your thoughts on the current club design? I love the Ricky's, but that is a bit out of my price point :)

Shaft flex is probably the biggest ???? in golf clubs. Manufacturers do not all have the same flex in their shafts. One companies "S" flex might be another's "R" flex. Some shafts that are in one club may not "feel" the same in another club. Also, I saw where a poster was talking swing weight on irons. Graphite shafted clubs will be lighter swing weight at the same length as a steel shaft unless the graphite shaft has been made to swing weight more like steel. Also, on an iron to get the swing weight higher a club maker person may put weight in the tip on the shaft. Now, this is probably debatable but think how the clubhead was designed. With weight at the tip of the shaft that puts the added weight higher and toward the heel above and to the inside of the CG of the head.

shaft flex isnt tied to swing speed ..... sometimes you deliver a stiffer shaft better and get improved launch and dispersion ... its subjective

Using a golf pro can be critical, I used Wilson’s 30+ years ago and had x31plus irons I was able to try before buying. Starting again I used these was having lessons and pro said I’d definitely benefit newer irons. Had a fitting session booked to try D7 forged, and someone traded in a like new set. I tested these and had lie tweaked. Mistake I made was then ordering the 3,4 iron in these at the same time instead of waiting to see how game went. 24 HC and winter golf I am better than this but cannot be cut yet, 3 iron is little used, but I’m getting there through range work. Replaced my persimmon 3 and 5 W with g400 3W and sim max2 3H. Still having lessons and getting lies checked on my clubs after 2 years lie was changed 3 deg to 2deg upright with my new pro, at no cost to me as I’m having lessons. I’m lucky the few mail order clubs have all worked for me, the 3H has a stiff shaft and still works well while I’m not a fast swinger

Look into a 7 Wood if you can get one I hit the thing very straight due to the loft it seems to go straight rather than to the side so much more than a 3 or 5 wood Goes up much higher than my irons so I can stop it on the green pretty good

I can't agree with point 1 and 5. For the player irons: you will hit bad shots with forgiving irons and with blades. Just with blades the result will be worse instead of the forgiving ones. At the end we are all bad golfers and if you are more happy with blades on the course, just buy them. For the shaft flex, the impact is so minimal. Of course with a swing speed of 80mph you will not have the full capability with an Xstiff flex, but who cares? If the one that plays them doesn't care why would you? At the end it's for all points you say 🙂

From personal experience I would say don’t rush your purchase. Was fitted two years ago at AG and it’s turned out a disaster!! As a slicer at the time was set up with B21 irons, hybrid and woods. Was then told two degrees flat was my lie angle. Let’s keep that face open a little more!!! Been refitted to 1” upright. If it’s a “free” fitting that lasts no more than an hour for a full bag book another for a second option.

What is a mid handicapper?? You can hit 90% of greens in regulation but be absolutely terrible at putting and so you play off 12 to 18 handicap. Far too many golfers get a club fitting when they can barely hit the ball when in reality they need lessons and practice. I’ve come back to golf after 30 years and the utter nonsense that’s only about make you spend instead of making you a better golfer is unbelievable. Practice and get lessons and if you get down to single figures then maybe get a club fit but golfers were playing brilliantly long before technology was available.
