I spent a lot of time thinking about an example set by a family member. He had commented his interest in my hair and noted that he himself had had long hair in the past, but as he got older he'd looked to simplify - to distill things down to the essentials. He had a weeks worth of the same, durable white t-shirts and black pants, and he buzzed his hair. To him these elements were not essential to achieving what he looked to get done in the day, and so he simplified it down. Whenever I found myself wrestling with complexities in my life, or whenever I felt there to be too much on my plate, I tried to relate to this view. I began to feel that time spent waiting for my hair to dry, or opportunities avoided because complexity introduced by my hair were taking away from me achieving the best me. At the time I didn't connect with it, but I have found myself understanding it more and more in the years that followed. I try to say yes to all opportunities that present themselves and I look to remove all potential obstacles between me and the things that may further shape me. I'm not quite at the point where I'm going to buzz my own hair - but I do have a repeating wardrobe.

Today’s day 5 since I T&R’ed my head (except undercut.) When defining my why and considering them, THIS is a part of my journey. I’m hopeful I honor them and myself with patience and love as they develop and change. And when it’s “time” I’m hopeful I can “let them go” the same way as a minimalist I let go of other “things” in my life. Your videos are a favorite resource for me and as I’ve developed my ideas and plans for creating and maintaining your last self and I line up. Thank you for all you’ve done. And thank you for this video too.

When I decided to get dreads 4½ years ago, I did a lot of research about the pros and cons of having them. Your videos helped me a lot 🤗 My biggest reason for getting dreads (besides loving the look of it) was the maintenance. I was so tired of maintaining my long loose hair, brushing it, putting it up, dealing with hair ties and hairpins. So for me it has been very liberating to get dreads 😀 I find it much easier to have long hair and maintain it now 😁 And I love the look of it and how easy it is to twirl it up in a bun, or tie a ponytail with my dreads 😛

@@LazyDreads What are you up to these days and have you re dreaded? I came to your channel just under 3 years ago when I first ripped and twist. I do get impatient with mine. I use cotton to sew loose hairs and then sew the sewn hairs into the dreads. After a month or so other hair has grown around the cotton making it unseen. I first had dread about 31 years ago. They were rip and twist but I just left them alone and split them every so often. At 56 years old I might soon be dead lol so that's why I am impatient. I have been interlocking but keep meaning to freeform. It's difficult though as I am diagnosed ocd. Hope you are well and enjoying life. Merry Chrimbo.

I removed my 5 year dreads last year in February. Yeah the first 2hours were amazing, but then. I instantly regretted it. And i have been regretting it ever since. I have pretty thin hair and i need to put so much effort and care into making it look acceptable (for work)... so much money for products, getting up 30min early in the morning to wash and condition and treat and blow dry my hair, not being able to leave the house without "doing" my hair (anxiety, body dysmorphia). I wanted to see who i was as and adult without dreads and turns out: a stressed adult constantly anxious about how i look. So I'm getting new dreads started right now and I'm extending them with my old dreads. I've got hair down to my butt again and I'm loving it!

your very young and I dont think you need no explanation to anyone. I am one year into my dread journey,I'm 46 yrs old. I feel so free now with my hair locked. I had really curly, dry frizzy hair .it was way.more fuss to control my hair everyday vs what little I have to do to them now to maintain them. I have 2grown kids,3 grandchildren,I'm a tattoo artist. I have way more time now with dreadlocks than my usual everyday hair routine. we all get them or decide not to for different reasons.I have greatly enjoyed your videos and they are very helpful. your videos will always be there to help anyone starting out and so forth. I appreciate all that you have contributed to dread community. I also enjoy following you on IG, you live a very interesting life, very talented. Continue to be great, and your hair does not define you. If our hair begins to define who we are,or I habits us from enjoying life ,then it's time for a change. I bet that big chop felt amazing, and you have beautiful hair. whenever i have had some very trying times, you videos inspired me to not freak out and to relax and let them do their thing etc. alottt if great advise and i thank you!. ..ps.profile pic is an old photo of faux locks, not a posser, just haven't updated it nor care too.lol. you look just as handsome with or without them for sure.

Although ive enjoyed your videos and dread head videos in general , i cant help but feel that making a channel dedicated to ones hair in particular dreads has the unfortunate effect that you define your whole persona as that of a person who is who they are because of their hair and that can take over your perception of yourself in that " i must have them otherwise im not the person people see me as" . Ive had dreads for 8 years more of less ive never kept track of the time coz who cares, i agree they can get in the way but ive never felt anything more than its my hair and this is how i feel to be. Im glad youre happy with the change youve made and i wish you all the best with your future endeavours. Peace

My hair has always been thick and super tangled. I remember when I was little the first person I saw with dreads and wanted to do them ever since. Like a lot of people, I lost my job because of Covid, so I thought what a perfect time to start my journey. Time to be free!! I’m doing neglect dreads and I wish more people would be more open about it. I’ve heard it’s a love hate relationship, but I didn’t expect to feel totally powerful one day and absolutely ugly the next. I didn’t expect to be triggered by old men in grocery stores and be made to feel like I’m back in jr high being made fun of. I didn’t expect to have such joy over one and such hatred over another. I DID NOT EXPECT THE SHRINKAGE OMG THE SHRINKAGE. I started them because I’ve always wanted them and I’ve always had anxieties over cutting my hair (thanks again, jr high), so I wanted to let go and see what happened. It’s been a great experience (the part where you said you knew not to look in the mirror…LOL relatable!). I appreciate your honesty because I didn’t expect the negativity and felt like I was doing something “wrong”. Still, excited to see where the journey goes.

So glad to see you again, Christian! Oddly enough you had a HUGE influence on how I were MY locs ... freeform. You helped me to embrace the freedom of the freeform method. That being said, when you combed out your dreadlocks I have to admit my 1st thought was "The young folks always do." At the time you were in in a regular trend of folks getting rid of their dreadlocks in one way or another. Younger folks have more to worry about than older folks do. I will be 51 this weekend .. I'm literally twice your age. I am not angry that you removed your locs, its your hair, hun. Anyway, at my age I am not as much worried about my looks or possibly losing out on employment and the like because of my hair. I am basically retired and doing what I wanna do. Anyhow ... I am not angry with you for taking care of yourself. I would have been angry with you is you HAD kept your dreads for ANYONE but Christian. Know what I mean? I certainly hope so. Take care Christian. I still follow you .. for you .. not for your lazy dreads.

I've had just one dread for 6 years and have recently created 3 more. Once you get used to it being there, it's as if you've always had it (for me anyway). Just be sure to separate it and palm roll it til it holds up on its own. And remember to pull it aside while brushing the rest of your hair! Give it a go. If you don't like it, you can always comb it out. 😊

I've been wanting dreads for about 5 years now, but was never ready to commit until 4 months ago today! I've decided to go with semi-freeform with the towel rubbing method. I've always hated my hair and would always shave it all off. Always feeling that it wasn't the right decision while doing so, feeling like a failure that I could never grow my hair out long. So it's definitely understandable why you no longer had a good relationship with your hair. Your videos helped me understand what I could come to expect and how I should care for them though. Truly an inspiration for me to grow out my hair and start dreadlocks at the same time without waiting for my hair to be long. I've now gone 1 whole year a week ago without cutting my hair along with 4 months of starter semi-freeforms today. I feel so much more liberated and confident than what I did before and I hope it stays that way for many years. Maybe there will become a day where my hair and I no longer get along again, but for now I'm enjoying it.

Hey, you look great either way. I personally experienced that sort of “awakening” when I combed/cut them off in the past, because I too was younger and was in search of “who I was “ at the time; and it’s left me with this sentiment… We go through phases. Some come and go, while others last our entire lives. When you stop enjoying something, you should listen to yourself. And just you. If you’re constantly having to convince yourself that you have to first serve something ornamental, however deep the meaning, sometimes it’s good to let it/them go. Hair grows back. Sometimes it doesn’t! So enjoy the journey while you can.

I've had them 13 years now. Trimmed them a year ago, they were past my knees. The pain they cause my neck, head were just too much. They are now in middle of my back. A lot lighter. There are so many points you made which I've been contemplating myself, the itchy scalp, super dry scalp. Shampooing and drying them for hours and hours....upto 12 or more! I so miss having water hit my scalp in the shower and just massaging my head! I sometimes think that's it! I'm cutting them! But when I trimmed them it was sooo hard I don't think I could completely remove them. Maybe one day. But just not ready yet! BTW, I'm a photographer and when I would go shoot gigs sometime the look on clients faces when a dreadhead shows up is hysterical. lol

Every time my dreads need washing I contemplate cutting them off or trying to brush them out. I've had them for about 5 years now, I still love them but they can also be a pain in the arse.

I'm 4-1/2 years in, and I'm ready to say goodbye to mine. They seem to dictate the things I do, hats I can or can't wear, activities, etc. I am NOT my hair. I needed them for a specific period in my life, and now I'm ready to change that. It's not because of any judgement, and I hear a lot of people saying that I shouldn't cut them. But I'm just ready to change. You were saying EXACTLY what I was feeling. You verbalized what points I feel are why I'm leaving the dread life.

not a day has gone by in the last 5 years where i didn't have at least one moment when i just wanted to rip these babies out of my head, but as long as i keep finding more of those other moments when i absolutely love them, they're staying... that being said, the day that changes, they're gone! it's just hair, if things change again later i can start them over, i'm definitely staying, whether you upload or not, this channel has been a great source of information, in my case, everything i needed to get comfortable in this journey 💖💖💖

I've had my dreads for 7 days now, previously before I grew my hair for 2 years to get the dreads I shaved my head with a complete 0 buzz cut for 15 years. Your reason for removing your dreads and me for growing my hair are actually pretty similar, so I can understand your reasoning. Do what you do for you man it really doesn't matter what others think or say as long as you're happy.

I know what he means. As my dreadlocks have gotten very long and as I have gotten older. I realized it is very hard to connect with the majority of people. When your young it’s easy to find rebellious people/ chill with stoners or hippies artist whatever. When you get older and those things are gone there is a huge disconnect between you and 90% of people that have been forced to conform to what is an acceptable look. It’s challenging lifestyle because people don’t wanna take you serious as a person or assume that you are denying to grow up/ be a responsible person without even getting into racial issues / entitlement to cultures & stuff like.

I understand the perspective being represented here about the difficulty in maintaining "proper" dreads in relation to everyday society and the pains of a human beings life, thats sort of in the hustle and bustle of modern day society. My question is, I wonder how people who go 15, 20 plus years do it, without properly maintaining the cleanliness of their dreads. Do they just not care about the buildup/issues that will arise from poorly maintained dreads. Do they just let them run free and more or less ignore the cleanliness factor? look at Rastamen for example. I wonder how they manage it, I currently have a year and about 4 month free forms and I already understand your pains. Washing and drying takes an entire evening and I can have nothing planned or its like ahh, I can't really do that this evening I need to wash my dreads.

Thank you for finally getting to this topic. I got from this, what I think anyway and what I've always said to people about my dreads. It is a journey, granted a visual one. And it is maybe symbolic about our own personal journey in life. And YOUR journey with the visual dreads, was over and it was time to move on without them. My first set I had for just over 5 years. And as you said, it just was a love hate relationship. I cut them off and after about 8 months went back with a new set. I'm on a new journey now. Not sure how long. For now it feels right.

It's crazy to have a total stranger be significant in your life, but your videos have helped me the whole way. Thank you brother. It was an honor to be included your collage ;) my bright pink baby dreads were awesome and frizzy! But my locs today are lovely. Lol , take it easy man.

Now that your dreadlocks are gone would you consider making a video to answer these questions in retrospect?...(I've always wondered if people with long-term dreads gradually forget over the years how difficult undreaded hair can be and I think it would be fascinating to hear your "freshly undreaded" opinions) 1) how long does it take to dry your hair now that your dreads are gone compared to dry-time with dreads? 2) is sleeping without dreads noticeably more comfortable? 3) was it as great as you imagined to run your fingers or a brush thru your newly undeaded hair or was it anti-climatic? 4) is your scalp noticeably more able to breathe/cool down when you're active now? 5) in retrospect are dreads more or less difficult/uncomfortable/time consuming than undreaded hair? Basically, I find most hair styles to be somewhat of a hassel and I would love to have your post-dread input before I dreadlock my bum-length, silky, silver hair. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this, I'm currently in the process of thinking about removing my 15 year locs, but I've been identified for so long with them, it's a difficult process to get my head around. Will I still feel like me after? Will people treat me differently?

It's a nice feeling. Having the wind brush your scalp, the warm your head(and not sweat as much), etc. I got over it within a week. Now I'm growing my hair again and having hair imo is better than having none. (buzz cut)

I also feel your experiences stay in your hair. The longer you have dreads, anything negative you go through, stays with you. I'd imagine getting rid of them can rid you of weight both physically and mentally.

Your reasons for removing them reminds me of a video I saw, a girl with really long dreads down past her waist shaved her head completely bald (she kept 1 I think) because she felt it defined her and she wanted to be free from them

Good on you bro! I had dreads shortly and had considered restarting them but I find it hard to say I’d feel 100% committed. So I just stay halfway between lol scraggly half neglected hair. Our hair does say a lot about who we are and what we value. Good on you for staying true to yourself.

I got rid of my first dreads after my daughter was born, partly because they kept ending up in her mouth and that became very gross. She’s three next month and I have started new dreads. She loves them and, thankfully, keeps them out of her mouth 🙂

I've had my dreads for 25 years and I'm 49 now, I think that like most things, fashion, hair style, music, relationships change as you get older. Your dreads did their job I guess you could say. I was older when I decided on dreads and haven't regretted it ever (except the drying after washing, we will all agree on that). But I agree , once you start living life according to whats best for your hair, it is time for a change. Interesting & honest video, thanks!

I’ve watched your videos for a good six years (or more?) I missed my previous locs so much that I started new dreadlocks again this year (after not having them for years) The points you bring up are more than accurate, why you choose your hair for self expression and why you choose to revert it has good reason. Thanks for another great video!

well I am only two months in. it was a long time thinking. I have been told oh you don't want to do that because when you get sick of them you will have to cut them but seeing people keep long hair after 8 and 11 years of dreeds means thats not so. and maybe I will get sick of them and maybe at some point I will will trade them out for micro dreads. I don't so much mind the amount of fiddling at the mornings and waking up and just leaving my house without thinking about my hair. I had a serious shedding problem. my hair has not got thinner over all but I go through patches of time where my hair falls out way way more frequently than normal and my scalp would be very sensitive to it. a hair laying flat on my scalp freshly released from my head would itch like mad. like seriously in those seasons I would need to use a comb or atleast run my fingers through my hair every ten minutes not exagerating it was almost constant. I don't like the shower being full of hair or my hairs falling in things I hated the feeling of all the hairs that stuck to my hands in the bath when I ran my fingers through my hair.

I miss my dreadlocks so badly. I brushed mine out due to them being a never ending fight between my mom and I. I do plan to have them again sometime. I do agree people should reflect on why they want them and what it means to them. I was allergic to conditioner and have curly hair so it was logical, but I also needed a change when I got them. I felt stifled by other people and was having somewhat of an identity crisis and I was looking for something to connect me back to my roots. I come from pagan heritage (pagan/Celtic women often had dreadlocks) and I really wanted to embrace that, and I honestly loved the look of them. But over time they became more than that. I felt free with them because suddenly my hair wasn’t the enemy that I couldn’t do anything with, I was letting go of trying to fit in and be someone I’m not, and in general it felt like it was one less thing I had to deal with because my natural hair is so much maintenance as is that dreadlocks were less work. They became a stepping stone for freeing up my mind to reflect on what I want to and grow, but I do see hair as just hair. With or without locs I’m the same person, they were just similar to a piece of jewelry you always wear and feel attached to, it means a lot to me but without them nothing changes, it just symbolizes a mentality Same reason why I shaved my head when I left a bad relationship, it was freeing, I was taking control of my definition of beauty and letting go of the past
