Your take is quite interesting! In the past (until ca. 2012) a lot of climbing gym accidents in Germany were caused by beginners belaying with an ATC. That caused a shift in dogma and nowadays it is absolutely recommended by the German Alpine Club (DAV) to teach beginners on break assisted devices. The accidents of the past were just to numerous.

if i understand right. the atc requires perfect belaying. if you belayer hits a rock when getting lifted and lets go it will not brake anymore. the geomentry asisted could stay locked in once wieghted in this l the secenario but will never lock itself.. the gri gri can lock its self even if your belay really efs up. though not a replacement for skill i like having a backup for my belayer because shit happens and i would rather have more than just a right hand between me snd death.
