Stephen (Kurt Russell) has a dramatic face off with Axe (Scott Glenn) amidst the fire as Brian (William Baldwin) watches.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The sons of a Chicago fireman who gave his life in the performance of his duties, firefighting brothers Kurt Russell and William Baldwin carry their lifelong sibling rivalry into their work. Russell is convinced that Baldwin hasn't got what it takes to remain in the fire department. Baldwin is transferred to a "safe" assignment, assisting arson investigator Robert DeNiro, who is trying to make sense of a series of fires involving an oxygen-induced ball of fire called a backdraft. The investigation reveals a link between corrupt alderman J. T. Walsh and imprisoned pyromaniac Donald Sutherland. The trail of evidence leads Baldwin to suspect that his brother Russell, a much-decorated hero, may be the "inside" man setting up the arsons.

this is actually a preety great film, despite some of the corny dialogue, the action, cinematography, actors and location are top notch.. one of my favorites that I used to watch when I was little when we had it on VHS.. I always got super sad at this part because despite knowing that Axe(Scott Glenn) is dirty, Bull (Kurt Russell) still realizes that his heart was in a good place and he decides to take the fall with him.. despite knowing that he is gonna die if he does! You just don't see that kind of camaraderie/ character sacrificing in movies these days.. unless its Michael Bay doing a really shitty job of trying to copy films like these.. Ron Howard and Fire for the Win!

Interesting you've mentioned Michael Bay- in his1996 film The Rock the antagonist Gen. Frank Hummel(Ed Harris) seemed to be based on Axe, both heroic but disenfranchised men who vowed revenge on the system on behalf of fallen comrades. And coincidentally both Ed Harris & Scott Glenn co-starred years earlier in The Right Stuff

That said I would not trust most in my union with my life. Takes a special type person to run towards the sound of gunfire, to run into a burning building to try and save total strangers, to lay your life on the line for freedoms that most Americans take for granted. This scene is pretty cool, the fire is awesome and the explosions are cool to watch. Even when you think about it, Axe was the arsonist the whole time, starting the fires involving Swayzak and his buddies in a revenge spree because they were making money off of dying firefighters. Corruption is everywhere. But the third victim, cost the life of another fireman, Tim, in which Axe said "That was an accident!"

The fact Axe attacked Brian shows he was a traitor trying to get away with murder. He was only looking out for himself in that instance, but I don't think he was trying to turn the blame on Stephen.

I've seen this a lot as a kid and that's the way I saw it. I saw that Axe didn't want Brian giving away his secrets, Stephen was defending him. I always thought the reason Axe doesn't fight with Stephen and instead drops the axe is because it wasn't Stephen he wanted to harm or kill. You can see it at the end, Axe lets go of Stephen's arm because he wanted Stephen to live. They were already having their fights at the hospital and on the roof of the burning warehouse, they fought with words not axes. I think he knew Stephen would want it kept a secret so the department's reputation wouldn't suffer. I still think Axe was a bad guy for attacking a fellow firefighter whoever he was aiming for.

I have the answer to why Stephen and Brian were disappointed in John. John had gotten back at Swayzak's henchmen improperly by killing them. The best and proper way to get back at Swayzak was to call the police. However, since John knew too much about fire and its behavior, he went bonkers and killed Swayzak's friends. John was also trying to get Stephen in trouble by setting him up with those cans of chemicals that were seen earlier in the film.

Although, I have a lot of disabilities that will prevent me from being a interior firefighter. I must say, if you enjoy what you are currently doing then keep it that way. If you don't, then it's time to change things up. Hopefully, you and I can see each other in the brotherhood together.

The ending reveal with Adcox being the arsonist was a head scratcher to me.. I mean he also had proof of Swayzaks corruption but turns to arson to take out the problem instead of reporting him?? Then Brian fails to mention during the roof conversation about the files Jennifer JUST gave him proving the same thing Axe already knew? In the end its a movie, its gotta be entertaining, it doesn't have to make perfect sense.. I mean if Brian reveals to Stephen and Axe what he knows they leave the roof, Stephen survives, Adcox either does lenient time or Stephen covers up for him. I'm thinking the former, Brian probably wouldn't let Axe get away with it after what happened to Tim, and Rimgale's credibility or job would be at risk if they covered for Axe.
