The problem is, there was no way in hell they could carry enough of ammunitions for this shootout, not in reality. Unless the big bags they were carrying containing ammuntions, not money. Val's reloading technique at 7:11, is supposedly used as an example in the Marines. They say: If you can't reload faster than an actor, then maybe the Army is for you. LOL! Apparently, Former SAS operative, Andy McNab taught them how to shoot and move. Muzzle discipline, cover and fire keep the squad alive!

Even though Val Kilmer is basically second banana in the crew behind Robert DeNiro's Neil McCauley, I luv how this scene really exemplifies how he's the tip-of-the-spear in that crew, while Neil does the thinking. On the outside, he's cool, calm, and blends in easily with regular folk, but in an instant he's capable of any situation, no matter how out of control it is. He basically leads that charge out of downtown L.A. until he gets shot; an absolute war hammer. Just unbelievable storytelling, filmmaking & acting. The greatest Cops & Robbers movie ever created, nothing else is even close.

This film shows you a lot without telling you. For example, it's implied but never explicitly stated that Hanna Vincent is a coke fiend. In this scene, it becomes clear that Michael (Slick) is not as heavily trained as Neil and Chris. Neil and Chris are heavily implied to be ex-military while Michael just had a lot of training carried over from working with two military guys, but when it came down to the most stressful situation Michael wasn't able to properly react and he ended up boxing himself in a bad situation. You don't want to be carrying a hostage when your mission is to gtfo, and if he had proper stress training he would have pushed through that gunfire instead of getting pushed back into separating from his crew.

3 v 30 in an urban fight, you're going to die and you're going to die fast. Delta and Rangers got pwned by an untrained rabble in Mogadishu. Too many blind corners, too much elevation to contend with in a straight slug fest in an urban environment. These guys had magic rifles that fired 1k rounds without needing to be reloaded. Without that, you're dead fast. And I say this as a guy that's done all the fire and movement training.

The shot of Kilmer smiling and basically realizing "we did it" to his recognition that the cops are already there is so incredibly well done (5:02 - 5:04). It happens quickly and Chris' decision to start the shootout eventually dooms the crew in my opinion.

@@Comictalent _"but I don't think the cops start shooting on the street with so many people there if Chris doesn't start shooting first."_ Excepted they already were present with guns at the ready ; two of them behind a truck, about to come in. From the perspective of Chris : they were on the crew (and, by extension, him.) And from the tactical perspective, the moment he gets in the car they're sitting ducks ; the cops take a straight rush by surprise, guns pointed at them and the crew couldn't do jack - they'd neither have the time to realise that they've been had by surprised nor the space to line their shots from the inside of the car. TL;DR : the moment Chris saw the cops and their wweapons, he _knew_ he had to take the initiative and shoot first. Why ? Because the first rule to deal with an ambush is a swift and brutal counter-attack. The guy was a pro.

The cops wanted them all in the car It's not easy to get four rifles deployed quickly in such a confined space If anything the ambush shows they may have been too eager to go straight to the car If you have to collapse to a central point, you want to do it quickly and move on. Ideally they are all out of the building and are scanning the area before moving on to the car

Best shootout scene in cinema history. No dramatic music (the suspense music beforehand was outstanding). No useless dialogue or monologue. All business, no hesitation. The sound design is perfect. The only thing I thought was weird was the slo mo when Neil looks back and then in front of him in the car. I guess that's supposed to show clearly his assessing of the situation, him being the main villain.
