The most recognized engine from the movie would be Engine 17. Engine 17 started service with the Chicago Fire Department in July of 1970. This1970 Ward LaFrance Pumper was first assigned to Engine Co. 8. The pumper was later assigned to Engine 18. In 1987, it was refurbed with a Ranger cab and E-One body before it was given to Ron Howard's production group in July of 1990. Ron Howard used Engine 18 (portrayed as Engines 17 & 51 in the movie) until February of 1991. After the filming of the movie, the apparatus was given to Engine 69 were it remained in-service until 1995 when it was disposed of.

I'm an Aussie, born in '87 - I have the same story - it's been my favorite movie since I was about 5. Backdraft inspired me to volunteer as a firefighter and at one point I considered fire fighting as a career, but gradually realized that my ultimate purpose was to serve a pastor/chaplain. I wonder how many others around the world have a similar story of being inspired into firefighting because of this movie...

@TheJordanHunt3r10 ай бұрын
I used to do that scene with my firetrucks at my grandparents house as a kid. I had the Nylint die cast metal firetrucks and the ladder one I had was battery operated. One button for horn and one for siren. The other was the same brand but it was like engine 17, just had no lights and sounds. When it was night time, I would do that scene from my room, through the hallway, into the living room. Childhood memories 😊

@@matthewnorman1303 That's tough - I've got an older friend that just retired as a captain of truck company in FDNY. In my last brigade we even had a guy in his 70s still driving the engine on fire calls! Im confused about how ladder 46 went from a tiller truck to a ariel ladder truck
@mjb4303 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn - in the opening scene with Ladder 46 as a TDA (a 1976 International tractor with a Seagrave trailer as I recall offhand) it is meant to represent the late 1960s or early 1970s. Later in the movie when we next see ladder 46 it is meant to be the early 1990s (20 years later I think?) so the producer wanted to show Ladder 46 as being “modern” with a straight stick. Hence the updated headlights and warning lights on it - even though the rig used as the “modern” ladder 46 is a 1972 Mack with a Pirsch 100ft stick, ex CFD ladder 5. Its ladder was out of commission too hence why if you look closely you’ll see they never show the ladder raised on it. They used other rigs for the raised ladder scenes (look closely at the differences in the ladder) I am by no means an expert, just some info I knew offhand I have gleaned from various sources. Theres a FB page dedicated to the Backdraft rigs - look up Chicago Fire Backdraft Engine 17. They actually own the 2 rigs used in the movie for Engine 17/51 and a few others.
