The colonies were not just some dirty poor colonies. They actually had the higher standard of living in the Western world and the lowest taxes any society had. That is why the crown wanted to tax them, to capitalize on their prosperity. Also because the crown was deep in debt from all the wars. But the colonies were very successful economies; probably the most successful at that time and they wanted to keep it that way.
