The eighteenth century was indeed an "age of faith" as well as an age of reason. Movements like evangelical Protestantism and Jansenist Catholicism were significant departures from older traditions, just as the rationalists were departing from old understandings of science and nature.

isn't Jean-Jaques Rousseau who elaborated the theory of social contract?
@ayonsaha79637 жыл бұрын
@AY Ben, yes, Rousseau elaborated more on the theory of social contract and ultimately produced a book called the Social Contract, but the ideologies originated from Thomas Hobbes, then to John Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu.. etc.

This video is decent in regards to a secular perspective. However, there are a few things missing here. One, is that God is mentioned four times in this Declaration ("Laws of Nature and of Natures God, Creator, Supreme Judge of the World and Divine Providence": read the whole Declaration) Two, her emphasis was on science as a source of reason. If that is so then why did Jefferson mention God four times? Science does not define morality. Three, she only mentions a few of the grievances that were listed. There were 27 of them. How many books are in the New Testament? That's right, 27. Divine Providence maybe? Then, of course, the current progressive mindset of attacking Jefferson regarding "all men are created equal" and the white man and the founders ownership of black slaves as well as women's rights/sufferage. Most if not all of our founding fathers were completely against slavery. However, their priority was to establish a free country from Britain and in time to establish "a more perfect union". Were they wrong to own slaves? Hindsight tells us yes. But they knew in order to get the declaration of independence signed that they must include southern colonies as well as northern colonies to fight off Britain. The author in this video did herself a disservice by not keeping the totality of this time in early American history in context and perspective with the priority of events.

I know this is an older post, but I wanted to put my two cents in. The government and legal systems are secular by design (I.E. seperation of church and state). What is wrong with an exclusively secular and science based channel to come out with secular and scientific videos? Also, there's this thing called coincidence that occurs in many places. You can attribute the 27 books in the new testament being the same number of greivences and declare it's divinity, sure. On the same token, I could say since the new testament and the declaration have different word counts, they are considered polar opposites. It's a bit ridiculous to use coincidence as evidence. Correlation does not equal causation. (A little side note, it never specifies a Christian god, just god. But I digress) One thing I feel we can hopefully agree on is this is by far the greatest country on earth and we owe this to the committee of five, among others.

@@matthewpellittieri6841 Gladly. Concerning the computer analysis it was conducted by Peter W.H. Smith and David A. Rickards of the University of Aberdeen and published April of 2008. A study using discriminant analyis of the consistency of Jefferson's and Paine's writing using Burrow's Delta method and the application of word vector to the ADOI (always referred to as the American Declaration of Independence around the world). They said it is almost certain that Paine was instructed to use material from both the Virginia Constitution and Summary View. Additionally there was a note found recently from John Adams: "A beginning perhaps-Original with Jefferson-Copied from original with T.P.'s (Thomas Paine) permission." This note should also be in the Massachusetts Historical Society but I have seen it on the internet.

Read Jefferson. He would towards freeing slave most of his life. At the time if you had debtt you could not free slaves because they were considered property. Our founding fathers came up with a form of govt that freed slaves for the first time in the history of mankind.
@janetownley5 жыл бұрын
Michael Digregorio - That is completely untrue. Slavery was in full swing at that time, and continued for d cades after. The founding fathers had been dead for years when the enslaved people were freed.

dude. i like Khan academy a lot and am enjoying this learning unit, but this section was disingenuous. the idea is not that "you have natural rights because, uh, nature...or something." no. in short the idea is along the lines of that God has property rights with respect to men because he is their maker, and because men are God's property these rights can only be taken by God and by no one else. I know you don't like it 'cause your filthy new atheist, but the God part is vital for legitimacy and for understanding where our rights are derived from.
@Alberto-bm2tw Жыл бұрын
That's not 100% accurate, because even though Locke was Christian, the majority of enlightenment's philosophers were deist, which means that they believed in a rational God (so men weren't his property) and rejected the typical Christian God
