I just posted this to the Facebook mustie1 appreciation page: I am a self-employed repair specialist. I have been working for myself for the last eleven years. The other night I saw Mustie working on that baby backhoe. The video where he has to refabricate the pin on the stationary part of the claw. I saw him use PB and an emery cloth strip to clean up the shaft. I thought that was kinda neat because I've never seen that done before. Little did I realize I was going to have to use that very same method the very next day on a rusty old shaft on a piece of carwash equipment that I service. It worked like a charm! I couldn't pound it out with the BFH but after using his technique the shaft came right out. I have to give props to the Mustie one for passing along one of those secrets that we MacGyvers have in our arsenal of tricks for getting things apart. Thank you Mustie1!

This is totally me, on any given weekend. Scrounging around the garage looking for something that I can "remake" to fit the current project at hand. Love this type of engineering. I'm a firm believer that to work like this gives those of us who do work like this, a huge advantage over those who can't. Think, roadside repair, cobble together something to get the job done, fixing tools, etc. Great videos!

What exactly does that mean....as far as me...I'm cat Cummins and Detroit certified and having worked on heavy equipment for 24yrs...no...no his design on that machine isn't good at all the pressure in those cylinders are more than enough to bend and break that shit he's calling a thumb....he's going to get someone hurt

Great content and I thank you for it...one word of advice, if you're going to use a grinder above your lathe ways, ALWAYS lay a protector rag across your ways. It's extremely hard to get ALL of the grit out of nooks and crannies on a lathe, and the grit will destroy your ways accuracy !!! Use a piece if 1/4" 2" x 2" angle iron and form a triangle using the piece you tacked on first. then come off with a flat-bar tab on each side to line up with your pin hole spots. Less welding and less material, but structurally beefier than original and 45 degree of angle Iron on inside should give more clearance...just head figuring...but, yours looks good. Just a note, if you can spray paint it while it's hot, the paint will bake on and be a lot tougher and last longer. Oh, and thanks for the "wheelie" at your video's end. KEWL.

Mustie is one of the smartest guys on youtube when it comes to mechanical devices and their operation. With that in mind, I am trying to understand why he doesn't lower the engine speed to idle before shutting it off? Having worked on and operated farm and construction equipment since I was 10 years old, I was taught from day 1 that an engine should be throttled down before turning it off. It was drilled into my head that not lowering the throttle before shutting an engine off allows the high RPM's to pull gasoline into the combustion chamber and accumulate in the piston bore because of no spark. This allows the fuel to run past the rings and thin the oil if done repeatedly? It can also cause an explosive situation from the fumes in the exhaust system and possibly crack or even blow off the exhaust pipe itself? Am I just believing an old wives tale? The principles behind this theory make complete sense to me but here again, Mustie is a sharp guy and of all people, were this a problem causing him more work I'm sure he wouldn't do it? Maybe my grandpa and dad were just crazy like me? Lol

Mustie, this might be a bit late timewise, or mentioned previously, or you might have already discovered this, but the replacement pin hangs out beyond the side of the bucket and will ultimately interfere with the side of the trench if you use the machine for digging. Other well done. What tooling are you lacking for turning the pin, I see a tailstock on the lathe, and a drill chuck on the bench in front of the lathe that appears to have a 2 morse taper shank? If they match, you only need a centre drill and a live or dead centre to be able to turn long material supported by the tailstock, which would be adequate for the pin job. I would be willing to order and pay someone in the US to send you some centre drills and a live centre to give you the functionality. Wally

Gonna have to fill bucket with something heavy or add counter balance on front. Wheelies are fun till their not. Just suggesting to lower the canopy/roof on tractor to fit in garage cause you have more than enough to get a few inches, just cut in the middle and then take some of your thin strap stuff so it will hold still and weld smooth and paint... no fowl. Your doing the best you can with what you have to work with. I know cause I been there

I know that your a very capable man at working with your air tools however using a “death wheel” one handed is a accident waiting to happen! Because it happened to me and now I don’t have any feeling in my left thumb because of it. It happened in a spit second doing something very similar to what you were doing. It caught, stopped & slipped out of my hand and then as it was flipping around I hit the trigger again as it was heading right at the base of my thumb! 28 stitches later. I’m saying this selfishly because I want more of your great videos with both of your hands!

I'm late, I know. But better late then never and maybe I'm not the only one to make this remark. You welded heavy bracing on the inside curve of the thumb, but nothing on the outside curve. This way the it will always have a tendancy to bend like the old thumb construction. Btw. I like your channel!
