Word of advice from a trucker: The laws in ALL of the states in the US require drivers to either (1) move over OR (2) slow down when any police car or emergency vehicle with it’s lights flashing is parked on the shoulder. A buddy of mine got caught once doing neither and it cost him a bunch of time and an attorney fee to get the ticket reduced to a non-moving violation.

We have the same laws in Australia. They cause more accidents because people slam on the brakes, or swerve when they see the flashing lights and hit other cars. The police do not like the laws as said laws, enacted to raise revenue, now present a safety hazard to the cops.

Truck driver here! I’m a professional driver, I drive for a living so I’m more aware of the driving laws than others, You should’ve signaled too get over, maybe someone would’ve let you over, if you can’t get over, you’re too slow down too half the posted speed limit and stay as far too the left as possible while still being in your lane, this isn’t just law for emergency vehicles, this is also the law for anyone working on the highway tow trucks, construction crews, etc. Although I believe they should make the move over law too include moving over for everyone. Even tho you’re not required by law too move over for stopped passenger vehicles on the shoulder it is the respectful and safest thing too do. Stay safe y’all.

don't listen to this driver, DO NOT SLOW DOWN TO HALF THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT!!! i have been a truck driver for 27 years. if you do this and someone rear ends you you will be at fault. yes you should slow down maybe about 10-15 mph. think about it if the speed limit is 55 and you slow down to half like this person says to do, you are now doing 27.5 mph on a freeway. he is right to move over if you can. the law says to move over when safe to do so. you can and will cause an accident if you do what he is saying to do.

@@DemonsAdventures I went too Cdl school in 2021. And that’s what they teach you too do in todays world. Most freeways are 70-75 mph if you’re in the right lane and can’t get over you should be slowing down by more than 10-15 mph the police will get your ass if you don’t. But I guess in your example of a 55 mph speed limit 10-15 mph would work as that would be 35/40 mph. Around the same speed as slowing down halfway from 70-75 mph.

@@DemonsAdventures do you not understand the English language? I see it’s not your strong suit as you clearly missed everything I said. 55 isn’t the speed limit on 99.99% of freeway in America. 70 mph is the majority. 55 mph is typically the minimum speed in most 70 mph zones. I never said too travel at a low speed, I said if you can’t get over too lower your speed too pass. I assumed a 70 mph speed limit when I said half so maybe I didn’t communicate that clearly enough. I never said too impede traffic. And no if they rear end you because you slowed down due too an obstruction such as passing a cop with no ability too get over for a few seconds, they would be 100% at fault for following too closely.

Yea it is 10-15 but we all have to be our own judge in predicament but the thing on slowing down in a big truck it’s always about who’s at fault because if your in a big truck a lawyer is going to tear that ass up period big truck is dollar signs so go ahead and pretend it’s their fault which it is technically but however laws change when it’s big truck and I’m telling lawyers will have filed day with the trucks company and insurance

Also a tip: If this happens to you again when you can’t move over to the next lane, turn on your flashers and safely slow down as much as you can as soon as you see the flashing lights of the parked emergency vehicle. That will help make your case with the LEO that you could not safely move over AND turning on your flashers helps alert drivers behind you or a hazard up ahead on the road.

As a Law Enforcement Officer ( 20 years, 18 working traffic ) you have a good case to get the ticket dismissed. Unless the officer had just finished a traffic stop and was completing paperwork, I will do this sometimes, he should not have his lights on. In Georgia, you have to move over if possible or slow down below the posted speed limit, which you stated that you were already below the posted speed limit. He should have seen that you had moved over as far as you could. At the most he should have just given a warning. Not all are out to just give tickets, it's more about educating the public about the dangers. Stay safe.

Campaigns are all about increasing enforcement to achieve a political means. I got a DUI in Colorado for turning into a target parking lot at 10:30pm which bordered a strip club. Irony is that I didn't go to the strip club. But the campaign was the show that crime was higher around the strip club to close it . The cops did a breathalizer on scene.with a value of 0.0, then sent me into the station where blew 0.0 on their alcohol tester and then made me submit a blood sample. The techs taking the sample said it was the tenth that night . That sample came back at 0.0. so cop campaigns will give them whatever they want. Fight the ticket and note the officer that gave the ticket,. They are bad.....we have to get rid of these bad cops.

The comment about having a good partner caught my attention because of what happened to us. We were on the PA turnpike going through a construction zone when a truck came up on the left and was so close I was sure it was going to take out our mirror or side swipe us so I made the slightest adjustment to move to the right. BUT, I was already so close that we ended up bouncing off the cement construction zone barrier and we had the scariest minute of our lives. Fortunately, I maintained control of the rig and we slowed down and were able to take the exit which we were at. Once we took the exit, I pulled safely off onto the shoulder and we both got out of the MH and I was a tad upset! My dear wife just came over, gave me a hug and said "It's OK....we're all right". Fortunately, there wasn't any damage that prevented us from continuing the ride home so after taking a lunch break and some time to get calmed down, we were able to get home. I confess....I still get a little apprehensive in construction zones, but last fall, we traded in our MH for a Winnebago Via (Sprinter chassis) and driving a rig that is only 7 1/2 feet wide has made it fun to be on the road again.

You two are great! I’m enjoying your content. I’m also an old state trooper, so I can shed some light on your experience. First, your cameras are great - nice to have a good record - but in my state your cameras would have convicted you, because you didn’t slow as required. Also, I can’t speak for Kentucky, but our patrol cars have cameras facing forward and back, and the date, time, and speed are indicated on the video screen. Next, we routinely leave our lights on after a traffic stop so we can reduce the risk of being struck while we are completing paperwork. Why? Because we don’t want to have our eyes down working on the computer while the person we just stopped is still there. That’s a dangerous habit - so we should keep our head on a swivel until we’re alone, and then finish up. The lights stay on to slow traffic and reduce risk while our attention is focused inside the patrol car. Even that isn’t ideal, but it’s much more efficient than getting off the highway. Finally, we don’t need to create a “trap” to find law violations. Very few people really understand all the DMV laws, and even fewer attempt to consistently follow them. Vehicles are much safer than they used to be, with crush zones, ABS, and other electronic intervention that prevent crashes and make them survivable when the do occur. In spite of that, the fatality rate in my state continues to climb sharply. People are drinking, smoking pot, fussing with their cell phones, watching movies, speeding, eating - pretty much everything but juggling while driving. I’m about to retire after 33 years, and I’m convinced people are a little more foolhardy and a little less aware of potential consequences every year. Finally, every state and administration is different but, for us, the primary directive is motor safety. Basically, we’re trying to stop people from killing each other, which they seem determined to do. None of the revenue from our tickets comes to our agency, and much of it is directed to the counties, which contribute nothing to our department budget. We have no quotas, and when trooper activity is evaluated a warning is seen as equivalent to a ticket. Every trooper is different, but I warn most people. I ticket those who seem to require a ticket - that includes those who have terrible driving records, those who are engaged in extremely dangerous behaviors, those who deny the violation I witnessed and recorded on video, and most of those at high speeds with radar detectors. Most of being a state trooper is boy scout work. I’ve changed a lot of tires, rescued a lot of families who headed into the cold completely unprepared, and so on. I’m never surprised by how completely unprepared, untrained, incompetent, impaired people can be…. There are millions of rolling dumpster fires out there just racing around looking for their place to crash, so unless I can get well off the shoulder or behind a barrier, I keep my lights on after a traffic stop until I get back into traffic. I’ve seen several lifetimes worth of death and other awful, including trooper death, so I don’t feel bad about slowing people for two or three minutes. I hope this helps.

For the Andersen Hitch... Retighten the top bolt after putting the trailer weight on the hitch. You'll find you have about 1/16-1/8" of a gap. This is due to the gooseneck bending a tad after the load is put on. I was shocked to learn this one, though in retrospect, it makes sense. Otherwise, the base is essentially floating just a tad, promoting the problem you had (bending). Nice video. Like those cameras.

Hey, just saw your video…very cool!!! The travel of you hitch can induce fatigue and eventual failure. In order to reduce the travel, go to an auto parts store and buy some ‘57 Chevy motor mount bushings and grade 8 fender washers if the same size. This will allow to torque the hitch down while blunting the wear and tear on your truck. Hint: it also works well for the rear shocks on classic Mustangs!

On on hand I fully agree with the law and it’s reasons. However, the LEOs need to be reasonable when it comes to traffic and a large rig vs a small ER’s car, especially in a ‘test’ as it was Liz & Paul’s case. Our society as a whole have lost sight of the importance of slowing down and people have gotten killed (tow truck drivers & LEOs to name just two victims I know of from one accident) Another event that no one slows/stops for is funeral processions, usually lead by LEOs.

Just so you know, the ticket is a real traffic violation in Kentucky, as a violation of Kentucky Revised Statutes Title XVI. Motor Vehicles § 189.930. It says you must move over for the stopped police vehicle if safe or slow down if the lane change is not safe. It does not say how much to slow down, but the law in Texas (where I live) says slow down to 25 mph below the speed limit if you cannot move over.

The driver of this truck had many options to get over. First, there was plenty of time to get over, the car in the middle lane had a quarter mile of empty lane to get over. All it required was for the driver to put their blinker on for lane change to inform the car in the middle lane he was coming over. Plenty of time for that. Second, the driver could have slowed as much as needed until the middle lane cleared if they had doubts. ..Third, the driver saw the emergency vehicle long, long before they even got close to it, yet never made any attempt to get over. Slowing down even way lower than 45 would have been the last option. Appears the driver had an issue with depth perception and refuses to acknowledge it. Making excuses and refusing to pay tickets is not responsible driving. At their age, they should know better.

Retired State Trooper here. During my career, I had two Patrol Cars destroyed by operators of vehicles crashing into the rear of my Patrol vehicle. I was conducting a normal traffic citation operation, 3-4” on the Emergency lane, with All provided Emergency lighting active. Fortunately for me, I was outside my vehicle in discussion with the stopped vehicles operator. In all both incidents totaled 5 vehicles heavily damaged or totaled, 4 people moderately injured, and 2 people critically injured. Had I been seated in my Patrol car, in the second incident, I would not be typing this comment. I lost 6 fellow Troopers during my career, killed by vehicle striking their occupied Patrol vehicles or their persons, while parked safely off the lanes of travel, with Emergency equipment operating. I sort of understand your opinion on being overtaken by the vehicle passing you,however, your rear camera shows no vehicles behind you. I believe from my professional perspective and experience, you could have further safely reduced your speed, allow the overtaking vehicle to pass, then move into the left lane. I think by slowing, signaling your intentions to move to the left lane, and doing so When the lane was clear, would have had a more positive outcome. It would have been enough effort to change a Traffic Citation into a Written Warning. I think you could have driven a little more alertly. Drive Safe, God bless.

Hello Liz Amazing, Eugene here. I was going from Ocala, Florida back home to Texas in my Chrysler hard top convertible and just before coming into Mobile, Alabama, I saw a Alabama sheriff's car on the side of I-10 with no emergency lights on. I was only a couple of seconds from him when I realized he was police. I put my turn signal on and moved over. I was doing exactly 70mph. There was no other cars even close to me. After I passed him, I put my signals on and moved back into the slow lane. Within a few seconds, his Chrysler 300 patrol car was "on my bumper". Then his lights and siring came on. As quickly as I could I stopped. He came to my passenger side window and asked me if I knew why I was being stopped. I said that I had no idea. I did have an idea, I had flashed my headlights at oncoming traffic to warn them of a road full of patrol cars. He did not complain of that, he said that I had failed to "travel 100 feet from the time I put my turn signal on, until I moved over". Here I was, moving over to protect him, and he was worried about this? I asked him how many seconds it takes to travel 100 feet at 70 mph. He did not know. We talked for 15 minutes about all kinds of things, where I lived, where I had been, what I had in my trunk, God, family, my long white beard, Christmas, the oranges and grapefruit in my trunk, and then he said he needed to go and told me to "have a blessed day". I pulled travel trailers for a living for two years and I am used to being pulled over for no good reason. They just want to snoop into your business or hassle you. I have a lot of stories that border on them being the ones who are doing wrong. Thanks for your story.

Great “bad day” tips. Worth remembering. Thanks too for the Anderson hitch testimonial. I’d never heard of them. 35 lbs. sure beats my 150+ B&W (great, solid hitch, but I use a hoist to install & remove it). One more tip to add: accidents happen - it’s only “stuff.” Fender benders, dings, scrapes & what not are going to happen. Months later they make for good, well-meaning banter - if you let them. Happy day after Thanksgiving. We hope that yours was memorable.

Man that's scary. My husband and I were dragging a new boat. We were singing songs and didn't notice so someone was behind us the boat was straight up behind and we were singing away. It was really funny. We fixed it and laughed about it. Everything turned out fine. Then we got to fl and sun was going down. Husband wanted to put boat in river for a little while. I said wait until tomorrow. He did it anyway. Well we got stuck on a sandbar and it was dark. Kids were crying I said I'm divorcing you. We called a friend who came and pulled us out . I said when are you gonna start listening to me a woman's intuition.Anyway I didn't divorce him. Then we got to our new place. Next day we found a crab in the yard The kids and I took it to the ocean and put it in and said be free. We thought we were saving it's life. We had halos over our head. Then our friend said it was a land crab. Then a week later there was a big white pig in our backyard so I said awww and walked out there thinking of green acres. A neighbor yelled go in the house that's a wild boar then animal control came out with two dogs. It tore one of them up but he lived. All was well the Lord was watching over us saying poor people don't know much about fl. Hahaha 😂

Whenever I get delayed for any reason whether it's my own fault, someone else's or nobody's fault I think of it as the universe not wanting me to be wherever I originally planned on being at that time. Being late or getting delayed never bothers me when I look at it that way. There's an app called Off The Record that will pair you up with a traffic lawyer in whatever area you received the ticket and who will appear in court on your behalf. I used it and was personally very happy with the results. The price was reasonable (about $100) and I had the ticket reduced to a parking violation and never once had to appear in court. I was able to email the info they needed and never actually met with the lawyer either. It actually saved me money instead of if I were to just have paid the fine. Just a suggestion. Good Luck. Thanks for the great advice on handling bad days.

I applaud the openness as always and bringing awareness to an important topic! However, I wouldn't be surprised if the cop pulled you over because you didn't slow down enough. From the point 5:38 until and after passing the officer, I didn't see any change in the taillight signifying you put on the brakes, so if you were still going 62-63'ish that you mentioned before or even let off the brake and was at 55-60, that's still way too fast. My apologies if I misviewed the video and you indeed slowed way down but at least to my eyes it doesn't look like it. If you see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder, and can't move over, you should slow down. I typically slow down to 30 or less in my RV and if it's a sudden drop, I will pop my hazard lights on for a few seconds to hopefully let the person behind me know to slow down as well, since cars sometimes can't see past my tall and wide vehicle.

Hi, here in Florida if you can’t move over then you must reduce 20 from the current speed limit except when the speed limit is 20 mph then you must drive at 5 mph and this year 2024 started that it’s for every vehicle stop at shoulders like a regular truck or a car that just broke down must move over or reduce 20 mph from speed limit if you can’t move over because of traffic.

We pull with an Anderson and I get comments from others that it is "made from Aluminum so it can't be strong". Well, we went through South Dakota twice and regularly drive through Oklahoma. So if it will survive that kind of torture I think we may be alright, unless we decide to try to pull our 40' fifth wheel up one of the Moab Jeep trails. We had a traditional hitch with our old fifth wheel and got used to chucking. I don't have that with the Anderson.

As the wife of a retired police officer and then a HERO operator in Atlanta I believe if you had slowed down a very noticeable amount you would have been ok. Going a couple miles below the speed limit wouldn’t be very noticeable if a worker is roadside. If I’m not mistaken it also applies to wreckers also when the lights are on in the break down lanes. There are to many workers killed each year on our roads from people that don’t slow down enough. I like you attitude about the good and bad days it’s the right way to look at the world. Just my 2 cents...not meaning to pile on here, but based on the low level of traffic in your videos, if you were keeping your eyes sufficiently far down the road (which we RVers must do as every reaction takes more time than in our cars), then you could have easily and safely slowed down 20 mph below the posted speed, you would have had time and space to also move over. Every time I see a first responder (or anyone, really), I wonder how I would react if that were my child, wife, self, etc. There is no law for other drivers to move over or slow down for you when you have a situation that puts you on the side of the road, but wouldn't it be nice if they did? With that mindset, you will almost always find a way to slow down significantly and/or move over. Another thought is that you said you were traveling 64 in a 70. Many drivers would not expect an officer to write them a ticket for traveling a mere 6 mph OVER the posted limit, so by that logic one might also not deserve credit for slowing down that little amount. In the end, this is a good reminder to all of us to allow more space and give more grace to one another on the highways and beyond. Each of us desires to safely get back to our loved ones at the end of the day whether we're RVing or patrolling the roads.

Flashing emergency lights are meant to tell other drivers that there is a hazardous situation (accident, stopped vehicle, etc.) and as such, they should move over or slow down. Being an asshole cop and finishing your paperwork right next to a busy highway instead of up the road away from traffic does nothing but give the "defund the police" folks ammunition. Worse yet, intentionally creating the situation such as this trooper did is incomprehensible. I can only imagine how much money the state of Kentucky would have to pay out if someone gets in an accident because they were forced to change lanes or get rear-ended because they had to rapidly decelerate and someone gets killed all because of some stupid trap campaign like this one.

As a retired firefighter I understand the need to have vehicles move over especially on the highway. That being said, what happened to you is ridiculous. If the officer had pulled someone over or was assisting a motorist then of course you should move over for the safety of that officer and the motorist. But in this case he wasn’t doing either of those things. Also, it was not safe for you to move over in that situation as that would’ve probably caused a real emergency on the highway. I support the blue and appreciate all they do but in this case it was wrong for that officer to give you a ticket. Maybe a warning but definitely not issue you a fine.

Paul, I had an Andersen hitch for three years and quickly noticed the “ grinding” noise in the bed. I had a Spray in bed liner with a rough texture. I bought a thin (1/16” or 3/32”) rubber mat and put it on the truck bed. It stopped all the grinding noises, plus it stopped any slight movement the hitch may have had, before the mat. Of course, the base on mine was flat and not bowed. I loved that hitch, as Liz mentioned, it is light, easy to hook up to and eliminates a lot of the movement from the trailer being transferred to the truck. Sorry about the ticket, definitely a trap and the trooper should have understood you had nowhere to move over to.

Knowing the state laws is half the battle. Here in Florida if you can't vacate the lane, you need to go 25 under the posted limit. It didn't appear this trooper was in the middle of a stop, and was simply sitting there with his lights on waiting for violators. It may still be a violation, but real shady practices on the part of the Trooper. I'm curious if this is normal practice or a lone trooper looking for stats. I'd fight that. And I'm a 25 year LEO.

My only suggestion is to practice a "high visual horizon". Look as far down the highway as you can. By doing this you can almost always move over unless traffic is extremely heavy. If you feel you can't move over, make sure you have your left turn signal on, (or even 4-way emergency flashers), and slow down. I notice that most of my friends and family seem to drive looking at their hood ornament. Most truckers, (professional drivers), will tell you to always look as far down the highway as you can see.

Another thing police in “poor” areas do is they get right up on your rig’s rear bumper, turn on their flashing blue/red lights, follow you for a mile or two and then pull you over for failure to pull over for a police vehicle with flashing lights on and give you a hefty ticket. Our trailer has a rear view camera and a couple of times, the police started to try it but when I slowed down and put my turn indicator on they realized that the camera had “caught” them, so, they just sped past. Rhetorical Question: why are so many state police and other police just so many indirect revenue agents? 🤨
@johnholbrook6752
@johnholbrook6752 Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry for your bad experience with the State Police. I retired from the agency and I agree with you. In the past, I would stop behind a fellow officer that was conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle. I would pull off the shoulder about 50 yards or so and partially in the grass. I would watch traffic approaching from behind and pay attention as to what lane the approaching vehicle was in. If the vehicle was in the slow lane and failed to get over due to a vehicle beside him in the fast lane, then there would be no traffic stop on my part. It was just the luck of the draw. If the approaching vehicle was in the slow lane and no vehicle was in the fast lane or about to pass, then I would make a traffic stop. I fell victim to this type of incident some years back. I was working a traffic accident on the interstate and using every bit of safety measures available to me. A vehicle had crashed into the barrier/ steel cable with several passengers inside. Another vehicle approached in the fast lane, with no other vehicle beside or behind it. The offending vehicle failed to yield and struck the vehicle, pushing it into me and pinning me between the car and the barrier cable. Both hips, hamstrings were caught against the cables. I recovered from my injuries but have permanent nerve damage. I'm thankful to the good Lord that I have the use of both legs. With all this said, Ive seen this problem from both sides. However, the Trooper was wrong for writing the ticket. You used good judgement in getting over a much as possible and not panicking by cutting over into the fast lane, possibly causing a serious accident. With your calm attitude, there's no way I would write you a ticket. Did the Trooper stay behind you after traffic stop and assist you in getting back up to speed and safely back into the traffic lane? If this citation had gone to trial, I would vote to dismiss. God bless and safe travels. J
