🎥 TIMESTAMPS
1:00 Materials used for gluing and backing
3:45 METHOD 1: EASY
Pro’s
✅ Cheap, could use any backing fabric
✅ Rugs are malleable, easy to pack and ship
✅ Doesn't use spray adhesive
Con’s
🚫 Not as long lasting, fibers come out when pulled-not confident in longevity of products made using Roberts 3095 as primary adhesive
7:17 METHOD 2: SUPER DURABLE
Pro’s
✅ Solid, durable, long lasting, not going anywhere. Highly resistant to heavy foot traffic and years of use
✅ Also does not use spray adhesive
Con’s
🚫 Can’t get a great waterfall edge
11:12 METHOD 3: FINAL (and best in my opinion)
Pro’s
✅ Solid and durable because it uses AAT1132
✅ Doesn’t use spray adhesive
✅ Looks beautiful and clean, nice waterfall edge
✅ Uses less Roberts 3095

The problem for these adhesives is that they are not machine washable. This is an issue for small bathroom rugs or for pillows. Fiber Lok is machine washable and I use it for small projects because they are machine washable and dryable. Unfortunately, it is is very expensive, so for larger projects I use Roberts. It can stand up to machine cleaning with a hand carpet shampoo machine.

I've been using oops paint as a backing glue, I have lots of it in my garage, they're extremely cheap to get at the Hardware store.. 1/2 gallon does a full 3x4 rug. and it actually absorbs into the yarn and fabric locking it together tight. so tight I can't pull them apart. it's thin, malleable, and simple cleanup.

Thanks for the video, it's super helpful! Can I ask what the average drying times for both compounds? I recently made a rug with roberts 3095 and i let it try for 24 hours and i couldnt tell if it was just very tacky or if i didn't let it dry long enough.
@AJMAKES137

AAT 1132 dries pretty quickly - somewhere like 6-12 hours I'd say. Roberts 3095 takes longer to dry and I don't think it ever fully cures-in my experience, it's always a little tacky which is why I use it as an adhesive for my backing fabric

Fantastic video. AJ i have a question, what do you think would be a healthy method to glue a rug inside? I see u have a mask and goggles on, do you think that glueing outside even tho its raining would affect the glue quality against the rug? I live in Vancouver, where it rains a lot and we dont get a lot of sunshine, I m wary of glueing outside bc of this but I also dont want to keep glueing inside bc my apt is quite small and the smell of the glue gets everywhere.

If you have to glue inside, a respirator + good ventilation in a confined space is best. A lot of these adhesives give off VOC's which can be damaging when inhaled. I typically close the door of my studio, open the window, and wear a respirator 👍
