So what's in my pack? This is what I bring for a woodland hiking overnighter during the summer months. I try to go ultra lightweight and I only bring what I need.

I frequently end up falling asleep but at my age it's acceptable. I don't think I qualify as a UL camper by any stretch of the imagination, but I accept the weight for comfort at 61. Much of my gear is military surplus and it works great, I have however recently begun buying lighter gear that's purely civvie stuff. In the North of England I would imagine the climate not far from Southern Norway in Summer. Mozzies are a curse - everywhere!! So I'm considering your gadget there. Good Video Thanks for posting.

UL Backpacking is so much fun. Honestly it changes the whole experience. You don't need to have a sore back or sore feet. There are so many advantages to going lighter. Also, one of my favorite things is having a UL pack and then having lots of luxurious food. I've packed out an entire sub sandwich once! It's weight you can eat! Nothing better than packing fresh fruit and veggies, too. Have you ever considered making your own gear? I made a 20 degree quilt for the CDT a couple years ago and it was awesomely satisfying to make it myself. Good to see some hiking content from you, brother! In the UK it is a criminal offence to carry knifes in public, _even_ for camping. There is 'some' movement for the law depending on situation, but essentially you can be arrested if searched.
@DecMc
@DecMc 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Can you imagine if Ray Mears or Bear Grylls were stopped and searched? Police: 'Why do you have a 6 inch knife and a folding saw?' Ray/Bear: 'Because I am going wild camping!' Police: 'No. You are nicked!' Ha ha, yes I know they hate each other, but I enjoy both of their programmes. Someone I worked with had his car stopped and searched. He was a reformed former addict and was well known to the police. They didn't find any drugs, but they found a Stanley knife in the glove compartment. Arrested and nearly 6 months imprisonment!

What I have heard is that the police will use some common sense when it comes to knives here. I don't know what the law says about it, I have never thought much about it. I carry knives all the time, as I always seem to use one around the property, or of course when I go out in the woods etc.

There are plenty of sticks! 😁 But, just like you can make tent pegs in the field, sometimes it rains. If you need shelter fast, it is good to carry a set of plastic or Aluminum pegs. The trekking poles are a good idea if your shelter needs support, too.

Why don’t you bring your Fjellreven backpack? I don’t agree that everything should be as lightweight as possible. Fjellreven backpacks feels lighter than they are because of the sturdy construction. And I bring Mora Wit (smaller than the Lok) with leather sheath because it’s cooler with leather than plastics.

Good video Bjorn, it's always interesting to see what other folk pack when trying to go lightweight. I've managed to get down to about 6kg base weight for an overnight in the mountains and completed the West Highland Way with a 9kg base weight which included a 3 person tent and a cook kit for 2 people. It makes the journey far more enjoyable.

You know...a smart phone would replace all that heavy camera gear....just kidding! The Thermocell is a great piece of gear. They make one that attaches to the top of the ubiquitous isopropane fuel can, has pads that go in it but no other fuel required. If you carry a canister stove anyway it's a great tool to add. They really work as you obviously know.

Another great relaxing video from Bjorn, the outdoors ones are my faves. because that was how I discovered this channel. Yes, it's interesting and informative to see the opinion on current affairs videos, especially from a Pagan non vacuum cleaner perspective (use first 3 letters from vacuum to see what I mean). I live in a city in England and for years now I watch nature/hiking/hunting videos as an escape from the mundane and stressful city. I am in my late 50's now and if I had my time again I would've emigrated to Alaska. I saw a video from a UK KZbinr. I think it was RV outdoors or something? Anyhow he said to always bring a metal pencil sharpener in your pack. Why? Because you scrape the bark off of twigs, twist them in the pencil sharpener, and you have dry tinder scrapings to start a fire with! I thought that was a brilliant simple idea.
@BjornOutdoors

How long have you had thay pack, and does it hold up to wear? I know leather is heavy, but I have a bradley mountain canvas and leather wilder rucksack that has lasted me for almost ten years. All I've heard from ultralight hikers is that you have to baby UL gear because of how fragile it is.

I used to go hiking and backpacking all the time with my brothers in the spring-summer-fall. We would hike to areas to find new hidden fishing spots that were not part of the "normie" trails. It made it fun to prep our gear since we had to carry all of our fishing stuff in our packs, even the felt bottom boots (so you won't break your ankles when crossing waterways) food, and then your normal hiking gear/back packing gear. Weight was the main theme and we knew ounces=ouches. Sadly, those adventures ended when I was told I was no longer part of the family by my brothers since I refused to think like them and not follow their orders like a good little soldier. (we grew up in a military family and they believed their age granted them higher ranking within the family. You also were defined about how much money you made and not if you were a decent human) I miss going on those adventures, but I don't miss them.
