I’m convinced these backpacking foods are made for people who are just going out on short camping trips. It can’t be feasible to buy these expensive things for long hikes
@everythingque46352 ай бұрын
Yeah or for beginners.
@uwudidntseeuthere54412 ай бұрын
i go backpacking maybe twice a year for 3-5 days max. they work well for me since i usually dont plan my trips too far in advance and i don't have a dehydrator! i enjoy the varieties they have, and am willing to pay the extra price for convenience. not for everyone i know. tim and renee have mastered the art of backpacking light so i love living vicariously through them haha
@_Hollie_2 ай бұрын
@@uwudidntseeuthere5441yeah i think it’s definitely great if you dont have the time to do massive amounts of prep or your doing multiple shorter trips. These guys hike for months at a time so for them it’s definitely different. Unfortunately they probably also lose quite a bit of income hiking, they still have content but obviously it wont be the same as their normal jobs pay.

Or the rich... When the difference between a $20 and a $100 bill is something you don't care about, is my guess.
@raraavis77822 ай бұрын
I'm totally puzzled by these ridiculously overpriced items. I'm the kind of 'fairweather hiker' (lol) you're referring to, so just short trips in reasonably nice weather with minimal gear. But on a trip like that, I simply don't care about what I eat, as long as I get enough calories and some protein. I just mix oats with flavored protein powder and some oil and boom, I'm done. Pasta with powdered sauce and dried meat (which is easy enough to make at home) for a hot meal. If I even need that. In warm weather, I usually opt against, so I don't need to carry cooking equipment. Trailmix and protein bars for snacks. I don't care about variety or nutritional value, if it's just 2 or 3 days. I mean, for them it totally makes sense to pay attention and actually plan their food intake. But for weekend warriors like me?

Fyi plain instant/one-minute oatmeal is exactly the same as old fashioned rolled oats, except that they are cut up into tinier bits. This increases the surface ratio and therefore makes them cook much faster while being equally healthy. If you have old fashioned rolled oats, you can make them instant by grinding them in a blender dry jar, coffee grinder, or whatever. Note this only applies to rolled oats (which are pre-cooked), and not steel-cut oats.
@alaskancoppertop2 ай бұрын
Hell, I just pour boiling water over regular rolled oats and let it sit for a few minutes. Just as good as instant, better for my blood sugar, and no fuss.
@Hi_Im_Akward2 ай бұрын
It does significantly change the texture to mush which some people won't tolerate. Precooked rolled oats also have less resistant starch which lowers their nutritional value for average consumption (although backpacking, like they do, you want as many calories out of your food as possible).
@seajelly24212 ай бұрын
@@Hi_Im_Akward rolled oats are by definition precooked, whether old fashioned or instant. They get steamed as part of the rolling process, which is why it's safe to eat them 'uncooked' (whereas flour is unsafe to eat without cooking, due to the potential presence of certain microorganisms). Resistant starch changes the rate and type of digestion. Which can affect the availability of calories, but not by a significant amount. While resistant starch can help with blood sugar management, you'll get most of those calories eventually. Fair point about the texture! Personally, I like oatmeal all ways. I just don't usually have the patience to cook it for so long 😅

I bought zip lock style silicone bags off amazon a couple years back, was a game changer for hiking meals. as the bags are reusable and boil safe. ...obviously hiker meals at a store are massively marked up. as it's mainly paying for convenience. even a ramen bomb is significantly cheaper than a "mt house" type meal

Sunflower Seeds: $4.00 Old Fashioned Oats: $3.00 Apple: $2.00 Oat Milk Powder: $12.00 Chia Seeds: $8.00 Cinnamon: $4.00 Brown Sugar: $3.00 *Food Dehydrator: $50.00 Unless you have all these ingredients already, making a ziploc of this would cost $36-86. That’s 5-12 of those packets. Still a better deal overall if you are packing for a long trip, on short trips they’re equatable if you’re missing even a few of those ingredients.
