Hey guys! This past weekend I had an awesome backpacking trip on the Pine Mountain Trail in Pine Mountain, Ga., F.D. Roosevelt State Park. The terrain was beautiful with distant mountain views, lush valleys, mountain streams and waterfalls.
Thanks for watching my video. I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below. If you enjoy the video, please hit Like and Subscribe.
The Pine Mountain Trail is a 23 mile footpath with several connected loops. I hiked two of those loops- The Big Poplar Loop (Miles To Go: 7.8), and The Wolf Den Loop (Miles To Go: 6.7) I hiked both loops counterclockwise.
There are 16 designated backcountry campsites along the trails. Naturally I selected campsites on the loops I was hiking. Night one, I camped at Turtle Bluff, and night two at Old Sawmill. I really liked both campsites.
I parked my car at the Fox Den Cove parking lot on the first night, and the Rocky Point parking lot on the second night (I was able to resupply from my car for the second night and next day.)
You have to reserve your campsites in advance and can do so online. If camping on the weekend, I recommend booking in advance. Turtle Bluff was the only site still available for that Saturday night by the time I booked.
When you arrive at the FDR State Park office, you have to file for a free backcountry permit, pay $5 for a parking pass, and $5 for a map if you don’t already have one. You can also pay $3 for a shower pass to use at the RV Park, but buy that the day you’re going to take a shower as they’re only valid for 24 hours.
You cannot access a full map online, but you can pay $5 to have it mailed to you in advance to help you plan your trip. Do this! I decided to go here last minute and had to plan my trip without a map in front of me, which was pretty tough. BIG shout out to Jim with the Pine Mountain Trail Association for helping me figure things out over the phone!

You are so inspiring to me - as an older hiker who is overweight and sometimes thinks about that aspect too much you make me feel like I just need to leave those thoughts behind me and hike on 💜

Okay, dont take this in a creepy way but I absolutely love you and your gumption and your outlook... After 35 years with a medical system(not a nurse but alot of clinical training to do my job)I met very few nurses who would tackle backpacking as you have! (Gumption) The research you did and still willing to go out and wad crappy bag meals 😄, and still keep on hiking! (Awesome respect) Forget about "heavy" issues, I know a guy who's thru hiked AT several times, 5'5" started every trip at over 200 pounds, ended every trip at about 175. His biggest complaint was gear, specifically shoes, 5 pair every time. No similarities planned, just happened that way. He lived by, and you will too, the mantra...hike your own hike! Whether slow or fast!

Beautiful area! Time to rethink that nasty oatmeal! LOL Personally I don't like oatmeal, but I can choke down the Quaker oats instant if I'm hungry enough.

I live 30 minutes from the trail and hike there often. You started on the hardest loop. wolf den is the most popular loop. Come hike again.

Right?! I was surprised at how similar that terrain is to the Smokies.
