More than 60 years ago, my brother Charles and I went camping with the Cub Scouts at Pine Mountain. I had a wool Army sleeping bag. We popped corn I put some in my hat. When we got into our tents I pushed the hat and popcorn to the bottom of my bag. At about 2am a Black Bear pulled me out of the tent by the bottom of the bag. Some of the Pack Leaders chased the Bear off very quickly. I never saw the Bear.

Hey so I went!! I hiked from the Fox Den parking lot to the tower. Camped at Grindstone Gap campsite and at Old Sawmill the next night. 28.8 miles all together(some backtracking and additional exploring)Trail was awesome, fairly easy and very clean. Word of advice though to anyone planning to hike here is use perfect trail etiquette because the folks that maintain it are very much a stickler for the rules and will fine you for any little violation.. They check sites regularly and will call your cellphone if they find anything not properly done...a little overboard in my opinion but its their trail.

Awesome video! Thanks for this, Looks like you had a blast. A few tips for all who hike, eat prior to reaching your campsite and hang your food on a tree branch at least 30 yards away to keep the critters and wildlife away. If you want to clean anything including yourself, try to do it away from the water source that others might be using for drinking water. Fill up your bottle walk, away from the source, clean whatever repeat if needed . Thats why people filter. you can contaminate the entire source down stream. I

You might consider ULA Backpacks, big belt pockets and well built. I think my Circuit is 31 oz for around $250. I put a trash bag inside my pack for waterproof security and have been through rain and river crossings without it failing. Besides the HG Econ underquilt already suggested, Dutchwear makes an argon winter sock that blocks the wind. $55-65 ish that does an amazing job of adding comfort. Another fun video Trip. If you do make it to HangCon again it would be a pleasure to share the experience.

I really like them. If I can find it I'll share it. If it ever stops raining here, sometime in January I'm going to go check out Econfina trail and see how bad it got got hit by Michael. I expect I will spend most of the trip climbing over downed trees. I'm hoping to find the creek in decent shape so we can do another kayak trip this spring.

A couple of things:: First, the bag you linked to has a 52* comfort rating, not 32*. I couldn't find the spot where you said the rating, so, If I misunderstood, I apologize. Second: Why the Jarbidge u/q? A Hammock Gear Phoenix Econ 20* would probably be about the same price, unless you just do not want down. Great video! Thanks. As an afterthought, have you ever considered going to Providence Canyon State Park in s/w Georgia? I thought that might be a nice short trip.
@TripSmith6 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the ratings aren't totally accurate. I think the bag would be to warm at 52*. but it's all relative so to speak. I know the first time I heard about the bag it was said to be a 32* I use the Jarbidge because I bought it years ago when the Econ quilts weren't out yet. If they would have been I would have bought one for sure. I have a video on providence canyon - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpWydKh9l5lkZpo

Trip Smith I watched several on Saturday. I’ll be checking out more. Do you ever make it up to North Alabama? We do a lot of outdoor adventures up this way.

I'm curious why you use hiking poles. I've been hiking since I was kid. I've never used hiking poles. In recent years I'm seeing them more and more. Fun fact: I asked this before finishing the video.

hey trip ,how do you know somebody, up stream wasn't washing his underwear when you filled up & drank that water lol.....

Well, I knew by looking at the map there were no trails or anything uphill from where I was. Plus there wasn't very much creek above me.

Why no fires this time Trip? Just keeping it simple? Seems like it was cold enough to need one.
@TripSmith6 жыл бұрын
Simple, yes. But for instance on the second night you could only build one in the fire ring which was far from my camp. So I figured I'd be better off just in the hammock. No smoke smell, no embers burning my gear, no work for fire wood.

Oh btw, look at the shoes in Aliexpress.com... They have Salomon shoes for next to nothing. Not if they are fakes or not but they look legit. I'd order some but they don't stock a size 13..
@TripSmith6 жыл бұрын
I've seen them, pretty sure they are knockoffs from what I've learned.... They don't stock that size because Asians (china) dont wear that size maybe?

Great video Trip. Looked like a fun hike. Not being a hammock guy myself, im curious - your underquilt looks like it hangs pretty low off the hammock. Is it supposed to be like that, and if not, is that the reason it didn't do a great job for you?
@TripSmith6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was an enjoyable one for sure. When I lay in it, it's making contact with the bottom of the hammock. I guess it would be smart if I had someone observe it when I lay in it.... But I have never done that lol

Wonder if anyone washed their underwear upstream from you? A 40 degree underquilt in 27 degrees is not a fun night.

It's a real problem when city officials Jobs don't depend on them doing a good job They can just pretend to work and not actually keep track of who's at what campsite or what's going on what's going on or even take the time to answer their phones Why should any city official do a good job on their work when their job doesn't depend on it
