So refreshing to see your video of the Sierra’s. I’m in Oregon on the northern coastal mountains, watching our state burn. A community 25 miles away lost 100 homes, while on the cascade side the route we take to get to our cabin in the Oregon outback had at least 4 communities burn this past week. Air quality is the worst in the world right now. Seeing those extended times of just viewing the High Sierra’s was a balm to my soul. Looking forward to part 2 and 3.

So great Jarl! My son & I did your part 1 as a weekend trip a month ago August 14-16. Old Army Pass and Mt Langley were fantastic and blew his 16 yr old mind to what is accessible to all of us. Thanks for the beautiful film bringing back those great memories. Unfortunately, that weekend also began the tremendous heat in the valley and we experienced a 3 hr thunderstorm at Cottonwood Lake #3 after coming down. That heat and weather was the beginning of all the lightning strikes and ignited so many fires in our state. Was supposed to be just coming home today from a 5 day, 50 mile loop trip (I think you've done before) from Lodgepole through Twin Lakes, Belle Canyon, Deadman Canyon, and Elizabeth Pass. Unfortunately, had to cancel due to smoke and fire danger. So this video will have to do. Especially looking forward to watching Part 2 & 3 as my interest was stoked about Miter Basin after Mt Langley and I checking it out that section on the map. Next summer! Thanks again.

Very nice. I camped in the Cottonwood Lakes many, many years ago (50±). They were building or improving the trail up New Army Pass at the time. Blasting rocks and such. I recall fishing at Muir Lake...I think the Cottonwood Lakes are or were closed to fishing since they used them for Golden Trout. I've got a long story about being flown into Templeton Meadow (SW of Cottonwoods) as a teen with my sibs and hiking the 20 miles in one day to meet my parents at Cottonwood Lakes and crossing New Army Pass after the sun had set.

Miter Basin is beautiful...and the smoke gives it an 'other-world' feel. I did the North Lake to South Lake Loop last week (off-trail Wednesday) and could smell smoke a couple days, but nothing too bad - I think the worst was at Evolution Lake, but it was relatively clear by the next morning. We saw a thick layer of smoke to the west when we were up on Muir Pass, but otherwise, we really lucked out with the weather. The smoke looked pretty bad in Miter Basin, so I assume the rest of your trip was pretty smoky. Beautiful video Jarl!
@NorwegianXplorer4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that was actually the worst day of smoke on the trip, the wind changed and kept the smoke at bay until the day we summited Whitney, which was the day the fire in Mammoth got really bad.

I love the way you film, it feels like I'm actually walking the trails and enjoying the scenery..... which is great right now because I'm stuck inside with serious smoke in my neighborhood (I'm even wearing a smoke mask indoors). This video was so much fun, because you took the same route that I did when I climbed up Cirque Peak via High Lake, about 20 years ago. Great to re-live that hike! And you took my mind off the smoke and heat. I'm glad you mentioned that you made it out before the smoke there got bad! Thanks so much for these awesome adventures!

Thank you, really appreciate your comment, yes I made it out last Sunday, the day before Labour Day, if you look at the intro footage you can see some high alpine scenes from the trail up to Mt Whitney where you can see the plume of smoke from the Creek Fire that has just started to expand towards Mammoth.

From somewhere around 17:22 and onwards the blueness of that sky is heavenly. This is my definition of truly blue, fair skies. It doesn't look deeper and richer than that. Have you photoshoped it? =S I can't believe it is true color. And panderosas with orange trunks, white rock like somewehere i nthe desert of Saudi Arabia or Oman and vibrant/intense blue sky = combination which boggles my mind. Smoke gave it desertLY taste, Res Sea/Persian Gulf spice to it ;)) It reminded me white/orange mountains along the coasts of Gulf of Aden and Red Sea when I worked on cargo vessels back in the days passing those regions always covered with sandy dust, impenetrable kind of smoke created by the mixture the desert and sea. I really need to visit South Sierras/South East to be exact. I am speechless.
@NorwegianXplorer4 жыл бұрын
Thank you again, as you climb higher in elevation the blueness of the sky really changes, I think this is prob when I pass 12000 feet it just turns into a deeper blue. Always wanted to see the gulf of Aden, been looking at google maps etc of that area, its somewhat inaccessible though lol

Thank you! Its a 10$ dry bag from Walmart, I keep all my gear in there that is not the, clothing, sleepingbag, tent, food or sleeping pad.

What hike did you like better - Mount Langley or Whitney? Seems like Langley for the win.

They where both stunning, but nothing beats going up to whitney from guitar lake, no people on langley though which is cool

Your 4k-60p looks SO much better than mine. My latest vid is also shot and rendered at 4k 60p but not as good as yours. Any suggestion?
@NorwegianXplorer4 жыл бұрын
I had a quick look, it appears you use the wide angle lens on most of your shots? The wide angle lens feels like its got lower resolution, but it has better stabilization for some reason. I only use the wide angle for handheld first person walking shots and try to use the normal lens for everything else.
@msvaj4 жыл бұрын
@@NorwegianXplorer thanks. I used GOPRO linear format. I'm still very low skilled in shotting and editing and I think that's a big part of why my video is not as good as other people with the same frame rate.

No, but I am pretty sure It did not cross my mind at the time, but all smellables where put in the bear cannister. I saw a handful of other packs being left around the same area too.

Ok, I understand, I dont think people would mess with your gear, there are plenty of places to hide it. I would however leave a note stating your plan, there are some people who would try to be a good samaritan and take the gear back to the trailhead thinking that someone lost it🤪

Great video and great timing. Assuming there are no closures (and smoke is not an issue) I'll be doing essentially this same trip as a loop very soon. Can't wait for part II. Side note- I purchased the 256gb 11 Pro Max. With as much filming as you do at 4k 60fps, is space/ memory ever an issue?
@NorwegianXplorer4 жыл бұрын
Awesome, should be a great trip, never an issue with storage at all, a trip like this might eat 40gb of storage, but I upgraded my icloud to 2TB, so the phone offloads the files while charging at night (using optimized stoarage).

Jael how do you train for your hikes? If you train at all. Also, do you live at altitude? I have never seen you affected by being hike around altitude, that is the reason I ask.
@NorwegianXplorer4 жыл бұрын
I have been training by hiking peaks with a lot of elevation gain, but this last year I have been backpacking as training for backpacking, I do get affected by altitude so I plan my trips with that in mind, spending an extra night at Horseshoe meadows which is over 10k before heading out etc

I used to like it, but its been unstable for recording the last 6 months, it stops recording when it looses gps signal, very annoying. I still use it, but less than before.
