I haven't watch the entire video yet but I will. What I have seen brings back so many memories. I basically did this same trail in 1975 with my roommate at the time. I was 23 years old. We spent a total of 2 weeks in the Sierra's, 3-4 days at Crabtree Lakes. In those days there were very few people on the trails. We didn't see anyone while we were at Crabtree Lakes catching our limit of Golden Trout. If you're never eaten Golden Trout, you owe yourself a treat. Seeing the top of Whitney with its stone hut took me back 45 years in an instant. The only things that appeared different to me was the fact the air didn't seem as clear, maybe a result of fires. And there was less snow on surrounding peaks. Probably a result of global warming. From the peak we hiked down to Whitney Portal and hitched a ride from Lone Pine, back down 395 where we then caught a ride back up into the mountains where we left the our truck. This proved to be a very interesting ride. We hopped back into the bed of a pickup truck loaded with hay, towing a horse trailer. As we climbed the dirt road up the mountain grade we spotted thru the back truck window the two guys drinking Budweisers. Oh, it gets worse! I looked down among the bales of hay and I saw a wooden box marked Dynamite! Needless to say when we got to our truck we thanked the two guys for the ride and breathed a well deserved sigh of relief. From here we decided not to go home just yet. We spent the next 5 days in Yosemite National Park. It was easier to get a campsite in Yosemite in those days. We did the Half Dome hike up the cables. We did the hike from the Valley to the top of Glacier Point, and the hike to the top of Yosemite Falls. My hiking partner has since passed away and I think I'm too old to do Whitney again. But that was a summer I'll never forget!

I know it's hard to imagine, but there are different amounts of snow each year. Some years there is more snow, and other years there is less snow. To make it even more mind boggling, some years are warmer than others, while some years are cooler. Now, you may not know this because you're not a climate scientist, but warmer weather will melt snow faster, whereas when there is more snow and cooler temperatures, the snow melts slower. Each year, the amount of snow and the temperatures are different. Back in 1858, a hurricane hit San Diego and even impacted the mountains! Must have been all those dinosaur farts and some micro-climate-crisis! Here's another fun fact: The hottest day in Death Valley history was 134° ...you'd probably think that was in 2018 or 2019, as a result of Donald Trump's climate disasters, right!?!? Well, it was in 1913.

RE: Crabtree Pass I hiked this route (without Langley) with 3 friends last week, and explored the alternate route down Crabtree Pass (stay to the North while still at the top of the pass, and aim for the gully with smaller rocks) that you suggested: Making the traverse to the North before descending turned out to be easier said than done -> it took us well over 2 hours to come down (but yes: the gully itself is rather easy to navigate)... While on Mt. Whitney we ran across a gentleman who was going in the opposite direction, and who asked us specifically about Crabtree Pass. He also referred to this KZbin video 🙂

Hey Eric, that is good to know, thanks for answering my question, I do think the pass is less scary going southbound probably. Its funny how it is exactly so steep that you can not get a good grip on the loose gravel.

@@NorwegianXplorer Just got back after finishing the JMT (SoBo); I still think Crabtree Pass ranks in the top 3 most strenuous passes among those I've done in the last month. Thank you, Mr Norwegian Xplorer, for allowing me to join you on your hiking trails in America. Incredibly beautiful, majestatic mountains Langley and Whitney. Highly dangerous trails, but I know that doesn't frighten you (cf. your sitting on the extreme top of Preikstolen, Norway !) I presume not all stone-rocks on your trails are stable. I admire your courage, defying struggling, slippery steps near deep abysses..... I wonder you don't mention stone-fall ? It was for me a unique occasion to discover America, and to experience the scaring narrowness of the deep canyons. Thanks for your amazing film ! From Belgium.

I watched your video start to finish in a few hours. Relaxing to watch. Might rewatch it get further details of your route but did look at google maps and earth each step of the way. You obvious know what you are doing and experienced hiker, climber. Make it look easy. I do see a few solo climbers but for 6 days this is a great accomplishment with significant elevation and mileage. But filming complicates this for you kindly retrace your steps to compliment and personalize the videoing. I think the scary part for me was Crabtree pass going down.

Glad you got to check the Eastern Sierra and the Miter. The granite there is so reflective of the alpenglow (due to the large quartz inclusions). It’s also home to my favorite trees, foxtail pines, some of the oldest being in the Miter. Mt Langley was my first 14er. Been up 4x now and 3x Whitney (2x JMT + 1x HST). Thanks again for the awesome video - so very little showing what crabtree pass actually looks like. The line on CalTopo connecting Soldier Lakes to Miter Basin is shown going low as you did, then ascending a green chute up. Looks like a confusing area. There is a community layer (Shared CalTopo Maps Layer) available to paying users - it shows that people do indeed go high. The UTM coordinates for an attack point from the upper soldier lake is in the vicinity of 11S 0386970E 4040813N. You get there by traveling north from the lake, then I'd assume the goal would be to contour one's way through the granite to where you ended up with your first views of the Miter. I haven't tried it myself but I intend to this August. I'll be coming down instead from the N > S direction and will attempt to stay high and see what happens!
@NorwegianXplorer
@NorwegianXplorer 2 ай бұрын
If you find that way it would be much preffered, going down all the way was a waste, I thought it would get better but it didnt. Crabtree pass is something to itself, it is just steep in a way that I didnt trust my shoes to have grip, and the gravel was of the bad kind that could make you slip, but not technical in any way, just annoying.

What a great trip! I just bought a 4k TV in order to watch this video in an appropriate manner ;-) No, just kidding. But I really bought a 4k TV and this was the first video I watched on it. And it's so outstanding to really see what 4k means. I can't believe you are "only" shooting with an iPhone. The colors are incredible. The sharpness is great. What are you doing in post production? Same question for the stabilization. Is it out of the box from the iPhone or are you doing some post stabilization? You are not using a gimble while walking, right? Happy easter
@NorwegianXplorer
@NorwegianXplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jim, 4k is amazing, this is pretty much out of the box, I use the wide lense for moving shots since its got the best stabilization. No gimbal or additional stabilization in post. In post I sometime pull down the exposure in the mid and low range to get a deeper contrast and add a little saturation as well.

G'day. Thats an amazing view. My question to you is thus, You go to those fantastic places but you do not seem to do any arieals with a drone. I will be including a drone in my vlogs as I call them. I just wondering if maybe at that altitude, could the air be too thin?..for a drone or do you have regulations where you can and not fly a drone ?.. Gerard.
@NorwegianXplorer
@NorwegianXplorer 3 жыл бұрын
In general drones are frowned upon in the backcountry of the Us and Scandinavia, and they are also illegal to fly in any national park and wilderness zones, I also dont want to include any footage that is not shot from somewhere I have personally been, it would feel like cheating to me.

Im still getting through the video (I enjoy your work).....as an eastern sierra hiker myself, Im wondering what your permit situation was? Its not really clear if the area you were hiking in was "open" and in spite of it only being october there are NO permits being issued. I try to stay between the lines, but based on what you and others have shown, it still looks like great hiking in the south. Im trying to squeeze another trip in before the snow starts. Thanks
@NorwegianXplorer
@NorwegianXplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Neda, I am not sure about the permit situation right now, we basically left the Sierra the day before they closed everything down because of the fires. We had a permit to exit Whitney the day before Labour day, a permit my friends got sometime this summer. (I think that normally there is no quota after a certain date, you just self permit, but not sure how that works with fires and corona).

Wow! Fantastic video. So good quality. Well filmed and great editing. I read that you use iPhone 11 Pro MAX 4K 60 fps. So you must download material during the hike then? May I ask what tripod you use and is it just handheld or with stick when walking? Anyway hats off for fantastic job!

Thanks Magnus, you Swedish, your name sounds Swedish, in that case tjena!! :-) I dont have to offload anything, the storage on the phone is 256Gb and I use maybe 40-60GB on a week long trip, I move that to external hard drives when I get back from the trip, but I dont delete anything from the phone, but keep a 2TB iCloud account that automatically uploads all the footage from the camera roll to the iCloud, whenever connected to a charger and wifi, and just keeps low resolution thumbnails on the phone. Really brilliant and easy solution. Walking is just handheld and for stationary shots I have a little gorilla style tripod that always breaks, you know the ones with the little twisty legs. Thanks for watching and your kind comment!

Recently found you through Joey. Truly incredible footage and your editing skills are on point. Congrats on the life you lead. If I may be so bold as to ask you a few questions; I'm planning a 13 day no resupply into the Wind Rivers and want to document my own trip which leads to camera questions. How many hours of video do you feel you shoot per day and can you do it on one charge of your phone? How many recharges can you get out of your 26k battery? Do you also use your phone with GPS mapping software? Have you needed a solar charger ? I'm trying to better understand what my needs will be as I've always used a 35mm. Any thoughts, tips, or videos you've watched to gain insight would be great. Thank you for any help and please keep the incredible videos coming. We'll be in the Winds next August, you are welcome to join us on the trail or swing by camp for a cup of instant coffee. :-)

@NorwegianXplorer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg, thank you, I use around 50 gb of storage for filming a week long trip, keep the phone in flight mode. A 26k battery should be sufficient I believe, If you are careful with recording your gps location on a mapping software, I think my alltrails app uses around 25% of my battery capacity on a trip, so If I need to save battery life that is the one that has to go. A solar charger that works, like the Anker ones are a great addition, I have been borrowing Joeys Anker solar panel from time to time and it charges the phone faster than I though.

@@NorwegianXplorer Thank you so much for the quick reply. Like most people, I would like to look back and feel like I'm reliving a trip from time to time. So many of my past trips were stop, drop the pack, pull out the 35mm, reverse. After developing, I realize I have 50 shots of nine different places. It was difficult to document it as I went due to the hassle of stopping. My goal is to fully encompass the hike. I know my videos won't compare with yours but I sure hope in a similar way I can catch the flavor of the entire journey. Thank you again for your wonderful videos.

Looks like a nice trip! I was thinking of doing a similar trip myself making it a loop from horseshoe meadows to Mt. Whitney. What kind of permits do you need to camp in Sequoia National Park and also do you need a permit to summit Whitney from the west side? I've heard a lot of different answers about how to get permits for Mt Whitney I was wondering what you did?
@NorwegianXplorer
@NorwegianXplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, it was a awesome trip, we had a permit to exit through the Whitney zone the day we did. If you walk through the Whitney zone, which is on the east side of the mountain, you need a Whitney permit. But, if you both enter and exit the summit from the western side its called «visiting mt Whitney» and you can do that with only your normal backcountry permit.
@theadventureswithben
@theadventureswithben 3 жыл бұрын
@@NorwegianXplorer Thanks a lot. Since the Trailhead at horseshoe meadows is technically in the wilderness area I only need a permit for the days I am in the national park right? And when I fill out the permit I only need to tell the NPS when and where I'm entering and leaving the park and they don't care what we do in the wilderness areas or do I tell them my whole itenery?

This Norwegian American did this as my first backpacking trip in the mid 90's. Old Army pass vs. New Army was interesting. Old Army was crumbly in the 90's. Surprised by a mountain lion at the top of new army. I did both passes to see. The boulder field of Langley on top was a little tricky.
