I think you conducted a pretty darn good - and fair - comparison test between these 3 products. Gotta go with the MSR Windburner. Thanks!

Great test. I just bought a JetBoil the other day and used it on Mt.Adams night before last. There were about 40mph winds and I was behind a 4ft tall wind screen and the jet boil wouldn't light and wouldn't maintain a flame unless I had a windscreen built directly around it and there was 0 wind near the flame. Then it ran out of fuel after melting snow to a boil only 4-5 times. Luckily I had some friends with their own stoves or I would have been out of water for the trip...

jetboil instructions say not to melt snow in the jet boil. It almost ruins the container and as you found out....burns off all your fuel.

Excellent video. I have been leaning toward the MSR and this review has sealed the deal.

I witnessed similar results camping a night at the Sahale Glacier Camp in North Cascades National Park. I don't know the exact temperature but it had to be between 30 and 21 degrees F, with wind gusting 20-30 MPH constantly. My group had an MSR Windburner going in the vestibule of our tent with no issues at all, while the group next to us was using a Jet Boil (not sure on the model) and struggled for over an hour to get water boiled for their party (despite my offer to use our Windburner). The Windburner is my go-to from now on.

Never been in that kind of situation, but wonder if you can just hold the jetboil with your back into the wind for 100 seconds?

MSR hands down for wind or no wind. It’s just going to work always. For no wind scenario I’ll take a 1 gram loss of fuel anyway. Now MSR NEEDS to put in a igniter and it would be king.

Bought the MSR windburner based off your review! I own the flash and can’t complain but, I am starting to spend time above tree line so the windburner fits the bill.

Props to you for testing with a fan. It's always windy in the Sierra of Northern California where I go hiking, so to test a stove without wind is meaningless for me. That's the problem with little sit on top stoves like the Pocket Rocket, they're light, but they suck in anything over 5 mph wind.

Hi loved the set of videos on the different tests. I use the Primus Omnifuel ll. It is the best for me in the north of Scotland. I personally dont like msr products as i find them pver priced and poor quality. I have seen to many wind damaged tents My Hilleberg Soulo and Tarra are by far the best tents i have owned in the near 40 years of camping. This video you have done with the others on speed of boil and fuel efficiency Have convinced me that the msr windburner is a good stove to have for a couple of up coming trips. By far the best real world advice on stoves. Cheers.

not a bad comparison video, but it would be really neat to see a test of the efficiency of each fuel and burner. You could measure the weight of each canister before and after your test to determine which fuel system was the most efficient at bringing water to a boil despite the time differences. I don't care if I have to wait an extra minute to boil water, if that means I'm more efficient at boiling 2 cups of water with the jetboil

I did some math based on your previous test to see which is most efficient in real world situations. According to your fuel consumption tests, this is the data I got: MSR - 6.23g to boil Jet boil - 7.68g Primus - 9.4g Thats what should have been used this test by doing the math on grams per second in your last test. Shame I have the Primus, it falls in last every test possible lol. Ill keep it but looking at the windburner harder now

You'd think. But because the head of the MSR is so much larger, it actually uses more fuel in a shorter amount of time.

It would be cool to see boil times including setup. Start with them as they would be in your pack, and stop the timer when you have the water boiling. It will include the other factors such as setup and ignition into the time, just like on the trail.

Winter gas wich you used for the Primus burner is rated for lower temperatures than you got indoors. It could be a factor?

The time doesn’t tell the whole story, the only reason one should care about boil time is fuel useage. One could take longer to boil but still use less fuel.

I’m curious about the handle on the msr, it’s so close to the pot, is there a heat guard or something, seems like you’d have to leave it a while after heating before touching/moving.

I am not sure if you have an update on this kond of test. I will search for any. But, just an idea. Try to redo this and add a cheap, aliexpress version, the bulin 1.5l pot with a 3800w burner. And use the same type of fuel for all stoves :)

Which one burns / heats better in cold condition? IE Take the canisters out the freezer. Minus 7°C is the lowest recommended temperature. I camp in lower temperatures and cannot use my gas stoves at all. I need to use hex blocks and wood.

Great test, probably one of the most useful on yt. My wishes to improve: - run stoves with the same gas - test stoves on empty gas cylinder - e.g. when you have ~30% or less inside. I heard somewhere Msr is quite optimised for low pressure - but is it true? Keep going!
@cliff9136
@cliff9136 4 жыл бұрын
tokyotunnel the windburner has a regulator so low can pressure will have negligible effect on boil times.

Why are you using the winter gas for the Primus stove? It burns less hot than the normal mixture. By doing this the Primus had a huge disadvantage...

mmm, you probably did it somewhat wrong, one should take in type of fuel and fuel use. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJrHaaKKbNKom7s Primus used 5grams to boil, vs 7grams on the MSR on the same fuel, thus time used is accordingly

@@vvs3796 in all reality anything to create a spark would work. Most people would use a lighter. But that’s another thing to carry and have to use and maintain just to light the stove. for most it won’t be an issue, it’s jsut for the price.. why…
