I only first tried this last winter for the first time. So simple and sure cures any coldness problems.

I've never put mine in a bag. Never had a leak, only use Nalgene cheap ones melt.

Nothing like curling up to a nice hot bottle while camping on a cold winters night. Good info to share Bruce!

Thanks Chris. I have become a big fan of the hot water bottle.

Nice and short video. How safe is to drink water that was boiling in a plastic bottle ? Cause of plastic detachment
@robpelton6 жыл бұрын
Great winter tip Bruce! The only thing I do different is that I put the whole bottle and bag in a wool sock. Perhaps I don’t need to do this and if the bottle is manageable. Thanks for Sharing!
@naturecallsoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I did that also and found that if I shove it in my foot box for a bit, by the time I get in the temp is manageable. But for the woman who is usually already in the sack, she wants the sock. Funny I am not the first one in bed

Great video Bruce. I use this technique on every winter trip to stay warm. It's nice also because like you said we have usable water the next morning. It's nice to not need to melt snow the next morning. We can go ahead and get breakfast going real quick and head out. I also add a neoprene sleeve to my bottle to help hold in the heat and not burn me in the sleeping bag.
@naturecallsoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I bet you have done this many times. I felt a little silly the first time I found out I didn't have to melt snow in the morning doing this technique. I will have to look for a sleeve. Does Nalgene make them?
@KdawgCrazyOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Nature Calls Backpacking Nalgene makes the one I've been using for a couple years now. I think I bought it on Amazon. It's pretty durable and I carabin it onto my pack shoulder strap for carry and easy drinking access while hiking and then it keeps stuff cold in summer and hot in winter. It's also the perfect sleeve for a hot water bottle. It's with me on 90% of my trips.

Thanks Lee. Just watched your emergency blanket video. It is amazing to get some warmth when you need it.

Thank You Bruce!!! It was!! I did not expect that thin little blanket to really work. I wished I had remembered it earlier in the night!

In a pinch and for a hiker going no cook - on the AT I would buy a Gatorade in town and then drink it the first day. If it was cold I would pee in the bottle and keep that in my hammock with me to stay warm. Not going to lie, pee bottle worked great both to stay warm and for maximum long hike laziness.

That is something I must try. Makes sense though. In my old age, my youthful olympic level peeing is no longer. Damn this getting old stuff.

When diving in around uk we used to pee in our Wet suits to re-establish warmth in our suits (I must stress don't do this in a dry suit lol)

I just use mini rubber hot water bottle. 0.O3L or 0.O5L , cost is about $5, with fleece cover. 0.03L i can use as hand warmer when out on river fishing.

So .. are you using the topo maps for your adventures ? My reason for carrying my 3 1/2# 4 quart aluminum (Presto) pressure cooker. Able to bring up an entire 1/2 gallon of water (or water and hot rocks inside), sealed and put inside the tent (and footprint) for indirect heating, or under a windshield protected hammock for under-hammock heating. My new designed cooking system (has a stainless steel 2 quarts container with snap clamp lid) that you can also boil water, clamp closed, and have screaming hot water for a tent heater, or in-hammock heating system.
@naturecallsoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Another really great idea John. You have so many things in that head of yours. Yes, I love the maps. Thinking of making wallpaper out of them too at home so I can have them to look at like in the bathroom.
@johnlord83376 жыл бұрын
Just as long as you don't use them for TP wipes. But then again, thinking, I will send anybody a digital copy of Sacremento, SanFran, Hollywood, Washington DC, Chicago, ... and any other crazy liberal area, so that the real s-hole places can do a proper job of being usefully wiped.

Outer container is ~64 oz for large volume of boiling water. Total fire and cooking gear weight ~2-3#. The price for both is custom priced (!) - but worth it in light weight and multipurpose uses.

You are the man. I've only once winter camped - that was for my polar bear badge. Great tip. I am not familiar with the plastic Nalgene bottles. I assume that the current models are BPA free, but are you sure that it is safe to put hot water in them?
@EricOther6 жыл бұрын
I usually use a SS Guyote bottle the same way. I'm pretty sure it won't poison me. What has your research shown you? I'll take weight over poison.
@naturecallsoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Yes they are BPA free and capable of handling the hot water. Nalgenes are really fantastic. I don't know about the lookalikes though. I am trying to not use the bottled water from the store anymore to help not pollute so much. The Guyote is probably really great for it .

It is still luke warm in the morning. It stays hot for comfort a long time. I usually fall asleep though and have never been woke up by a cold bottle.

Good job Bruce!!! We use that with hypothermia patients. I am lazy and cheat, I throw the cheap break and heat hand warmers inside my bag... lol. Don’t tell anyone, they think I am tough!!! Lmao
@naturecallsoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Really? That is great to know that you can treat them that way. You should do a video on that kind of stuff. I also use the hand warmers. In the hammock in the snow I will do the Nalgene and two warmers on each foot.
