I shifted to ultra light back packing gear when i started to have My kid with me on smaller trips out. I simply could not carry the heavy load of both mine and his gear. From the age of 6 he carried his own gear out on back packing trips because i had managed to made it that light. And suddently we could walk for a week depending totalt on our backpacks. It opened up the backpacking world to us, so we could walk for weeks and weeks, just having to resupply our selfs with food within a week. On our latest trip we brought heavy tools to break Stones, so that we could look for crystals inside (My son is interested in stones), and we Even had room for carrying the ones we found back home in our back pack. This summer we climed Cliffs and discovered caves with our back packs on, in an area with a let of down the latter and up. Light gear is not everything, but we could never have done the trips and seen and expirienced All of those tings we have done and do, if it wasn't for ultra light pack packing gear. Out load would be to heavy to add challenges or tools ( or fishing gear as you did,) so we would not have this much fun in the outdoors. Therefor we also love ultra light gear♡.

Great video!! I’ve got my 5th kid on the way, 15, 13, 11, 4 and due in Nov. and our greatest memories are from the backcountry. It’s so much easier since we’ve been live ultralight members and can use gear that is not only lighter, but better quality and for a great price. I’m sure I sound like a commercial for you guys, but I appreciate the hell out of it. Makes my, aka dad “the mule” job a lot easier.

Which tenkara rod do you have? I’m looking at Tenkara Rod Co. and between their Sierra and Beartooth rods. Seems like the Sierra might be more multipurpose and Beartooth might be better for backpacking. Thoughts if that’s the brand you’re using? Love your content! 👍🏼👍🏼

Great video Tayson. I’ve been trying to get my 9 year old great grandson out on an overnight trip but he is too involved in sports. Oh well, one of these days. Take Care

I know the shoulder aches from carrying all my kids gear, LOL. I am sold on ultralight when I am by myself , my baseweight is 8lbs) and more important when I am with the family exactly because increased weight makes me tired and harder to have fun with the kids. And if you cant have fun they wont want to join you for trips in the future.

How old was your son when you took him on his first over night? My son is just over 3 and likes being outside and on trail. I’m just trying to figure out when he’s going to be ready for an overnight. More tips and tricks vids for backpacking with kids would be awesome!

Any idea what the pack weight was been thinking about how to get me and my sons stuff out on trail for an overnighter. How much of that was in your dads pack? Maybe an in depth true 1 adult 1 kid loadout video would be awesome

The following doesn't sound very good. What's your experience? "The ShadowLight 60 has an aluminum frame-stay which gives it some rigidity. The hipbelt is attached to the pack with velcro but not connected to the frame-stay. This limits the maximum load that can be comfortably carried by the ShadowLight to about 30 pounds (OV rates it at 35 lbs)."

Great video, I've been meaning to take my kids out backpacking but not sure what the right age is. My son is 5, how about yours? We have been doing about 3-4 mile hikes and staying in the backyard with a tent, but not really sure about the gear and extras. Thanks for sharing this adventure!
