Episode Eight of "Backroads of Montana" hosted by Montana TV & Radio personality, William Marcus.
We start with a tour of the Cameron Gallery in Terry, then stop at Makoshika State Park near Glendive to talk with dinosaur hunter Doc Hiatt, then visit the Medicine Rocks near Ekalaka. After chats with a saddlemaker and a pair of Wibaux homesteading pioneers, we conclude our journey by passing time with a trio of Ryegate retirees who combine woodworking and bird watching. This show originates from Ulm Pishkun State Park near Great Falls.
Program Updates
The Evelyn Cameron Gallery in Terry is still open and the town inaugurated the “Lady Cameron Heritage Days” in the summer of 2005. The event is expected to recur each year during the Prairie County Fair. Ivy Brubaker, who shared her family’s Cameron album with us, died in February 2006. She was 97. Doc Hiatt no longer hikes Makoshika Park near Glendive but still enjoys the park’s wildflowers and picnic areas. The kindly Wibaux ladies who traded stories of cold Montana winters have passed on. Miriam Breitenfeldt passed away in early 1997 at age 92. Lela Hall died in June, 1998. She was 98. Saddle maker John Brown eventually moved his saddle shop from Ekalaka to Miles City. He died in April, 2005. Ulm Pishkun State Park near Great Falls was renamed First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park in 2007.

"Doc" was our family optometrist for many years in Glendive. It's fun to see his face again & hear his raspy laugh!!

I lived outside of Ekalaka Montana where my husband and I had bought the old Took Bucking Horse Ranch off of Beaver Flats Road. I sure miss that place and all the people of the Ekalaka community. I am 76 years old now and live in The Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, tho I am not complaining, cause God wants me here, but nothing will ever replace The prairie's of Eastern Montana. As one old timer once said to me, " It ain't the end of the earth but you sure as hell can see it from here". Best place I ever lived. You can take the girl out of Montana but you can't take Montana out of the girl. When I die I may not go to heaven, I don't know if they let cowgirls in, if they don't just let me go to Montana because Montana is as close as I've ever been.

Found this very interesting. I'm 61 years old and live in Scotland. As a young boy of 10-11 years I used to playfully write out cheques on a Miles City Bank chequebook that belonged to my deceased grandad. He emigrated to USA in 1898 and ended up wandering the prairies in Montana with 1000 sheep, a shotgun and a horse. He came back to Scotland for a holiday around 1920 and met my granny so never went back. His name was Farquhar Renwick and he got the name 'Scottie.' His brother John stayed on in Montana and actually died out there. Here I am all these years later watching this. It's very evocative for me. If these names ring a bell in anyone's mind I 'd love to hear from you.

I live in Wisconsin. I'm 61 years old and ready to retire from my hard working job, I work for a municipality, I won't say what town, but I'm sick of the growth here. My goal was to move to east Montana to get away from the hustle and bustle., but now it would be impossible because of the life style that we created not knowing we were taking away our dream. The cost would be to much, I would not be able to sell my house because there is no market for it. And my health is the biggest problem, I would just be someone that would be a big burden on Montana. I just hope after all us great ones get threw our lives, we will get to be in that freedom with God. I love your show, but I see there is very little views, you would think allot more people would have a love for a place like the greatest state as Montana. I just happened to run into your channel, and it helps me get threw another day of work. I don't know how long it will take before i'm forced to retire because of my health, but I will keep dreaming with my eyes wide open. Thanks for sharing this channel. I will only share it for our loving people who appreciate life as our Lord intended it to be. Thanks again. And God bless.

Those are good words you typed James. Don't give up! There is always a way with God at the front. Maybe you can sell cheaper than you would like and buy a smaller place and make what you can afford comfortable. You may have to make a sacrifice and lower your standards from the typical "American Dream" mentality, but that is a way of life that keeps you and debt and worry anyhow. Do not think you will be a burden on MT... You certainly are not the only one calling MT home with failing health issues! If you don't come here and try to shape the area as where you came from, and honor what we have built from generations of living here, than come on over my friend.

I was born and raised in Montana & I like these little videos, except the music sucks. Lol. You guys should think about maybe putting John Denver music on your videos or someone along those lines because the music that you use now almost destroys the video.
