@@CouchEconomyTX In the words of my son's late great tuba teacher, Dr Owen Metcalf "Tubas are the best people you'll ever find. You build a music program on your tubas." I've found that to be the case all my life. Yeah, these are some nasty trumpets, but tubas are the great people in music - selfless team players. Keep playing the big horn.

I've always greatly appreciated Bob Summers' contribution to the Big Phat Band. His sound is totally dark and un-commercial; in stark contrast to the rest of the trumpets. I love his melodic motives, and bebop notes over the crazy high notes and 16th/32nd notes. He's truly a classic guy.

Long time listener to Bob Summers. Since he came on Maynard's band around '74. Always one of the coolest Jazz soloists even if he rarely if ever ventures above High C. Takes a committed musician to stick to that which he does best. As many cats who don't have such monstrous upper registers tend to give up the racket. Either that or try to keep up with the screamers and eventually lose their chops. Such as the Great Freddie Hubbard did.

I really liked Wayne’s playing, the dude on the far right and the dude on the far left!!! They both have a great tone, great soloing and controlled upper register without making the trumpet sound like a toy.

This music, and this big band culture is completely foreign to younger generations who have been raised on rock guitar bands and talentless rap groups. They can't understand this music, or even hear it properly. They view this music as something their quaint old grandparents listened to. To Gen X,Y and Millennials, pop music has to be vocal, self-indulged, rebellious, deafening, sexual, vulgar, and anti-social, led by stars who have roots in narcissistic drug-dealing and gun violence. Goodwin's band culture is born of the 1940's dance bands when people had fun, dancing together in large, well-lit dance halls, doing jitterbug and acrobatic steps. Innocent by today's standards, yet extremely entertaining and fun, especially when the audience became part of the entire musical experience. Thank God and Gordon Goodwin for keeping this fantastic American tradition of great music alive in 2021 !!
