Doc is retired at 93, Maynard and Derick have left us. What we have here is a musician that can carry on the tradition of great trumpeters, with very good musician backups. Thank you.

I just noticed he's playing with the University of North Texas Jazz Band. My younger daughter went to school there and one time I was up and had the fortune of watching one of their jazz bands playing in their rec center. It was an absolutely AMAZING group. Even better it was almost 2 hours of music and all free!

40 years ago when I lived in Dallas, NTSU One O'Clock Lab Band members would come down now and then to play (for free I think). Many of their alumni played in the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. Bill Tillman (RIP) played with DJO as well.

Well... Wayne did spend a number of years playing with Maynard's bands and learning a lot from him, as well as Arturo Sandoval... He carries on the torch of being one of the best players in the upper registers very well, and is one of the most prolific session trumpet players in the last 30 years... Dude has massive chops and a STACKED resume.

Kind of lose me halfway in the song but get me back at the end. Amazing and talented musicians. Brings me back to my Junior High and High School days listening to Maynard. I played back then and even traveled in a band a bit. But I quit because I could never even got close to what Maynard and his guys were doing. I greatly regret being a quitter as now I am getting old and want to pass on the love of rock-jazz screaming trumpet and blasting trombone music to my grandsons. I will definitely give it a shot. Gonna dust off the old Martin and see if I can get a little something back. Maybe Wayne’s version of O’ Holy Night by Christmas? A couple of octaves lower of course… 😉
@josephchapa36032 жыл бұрын
i used to idolize Maynard & Wayne in my band days and as most trumpet players were, i was obsessed with improving my upper register to get to the level of Maynard and Wayne, but of course to no avail. Now that I left band and I look back on these videos of Wayne performing, it too makes me wanna bring back my trumpet to play once again.
@frankdaleccio927 Жыл бұрын
Dave , you basically have almost exactly same story I could have told of way back and when..I am also a critical listener of all great trumpet players ...but on this one I'd say Waynard slightly disappointed me just a little bit. Upper register sounded weak and thin as if he was choking due to a shallow cup mouth piece.

@rickdenney5772 Жыл бұрын
That wrinkle was straight off Maynard Ferguson’s MF Horn 4-5, Live at Jimmy’s. I suspect that’s first time he played it, and Wayne obviously knew the reference. Wayne is awesome, but Maynard had such fluidity in the screamer range.

I agree. I've listened to a ton of Bergeron's stuff and he's sounded a lot better than he did here. Not that he sounded bad, by any means, but he's absolutely phenomenal when he's "on". This sounded like he was a bit "off"....although his "off" is better than 99.9% of trumpet players out there.
