Wow, never heard of this guy! I'll have to check out some of his stuff now! I can hear a lot of Jean Michel Jarre influence in his songs, I'm very fond of that "Jarre Style", yet still he makes it "easy to listen to" to reach a bigger audience. Great video, as usual hehe. It's a shame you didn't get the chance to do a gear tour of his stuff, 'cause I really LOVE gear rundown or collection videos. Oh well, better luck next time! :)

This was a collab with Roland so only roland gear this time (usually he uses other brands as well). Quite a few new rolands there, and some from his vintage collection. It would be more interesting to see Kebu's actual collection in a video then this hignly sponsored Roland rig. If you would like to know what synths were used here; New: 3 Roland JD-XA 2 Roland System 8 Roland VP-03 (on the floor) Roland SH-01a Roland SE-02 Roland System 500 Vintage: Roland Juno 60 Roland Alpha Juno (1) Roland Alpha Juno 2 Roland JX-8P Drums Roland Tr-8 Roland TR-808 (well hidden under) Samples Roland SP-404 There is a JD-2000 in there, mentioned in the video, it works as a midi controller, controlling other synths. The VP-03 for example.

Kebu is a real artist unlike a lot of today's synth producers who couldn't actually play live. So I am very partial to people who are actually good musicians and not just good/great producers. If you spend days on end pencilling in notes in a DAW you can get a great composition but doing it live is a whole different ball game.

Actually, he did not say that he changes patches/voices as a way to improvise. He said that some synths were not hooked to the akai, and therefor were not sent program change messages so they would not automaticaly have their patches switched, and he said that he felt that this could result in a more "live" feel, but that "he suceeded a little too well this time" (played the wrong patch a bit too often).

He's done a great job of recreating the sound of his vintage rig with the new Roland set up. I still prefer the original set up though as it was a more organic sound. It's odd that Roland, who is so resistant to making anything analog anymore, would choose to pair up with guy who is so proudly an analog and hardware aficionado. He just recently did a Tedx Talks called "Analog music in a digital world" where he talks about all the reasons why he prefers analog hardware over digital synths and software. You'd think they would have chosen someone like Nick Rhodes who uses Roland's gear pretty exclusively...

Man I have a lot of respect for this guy i know how hard it is to keep all of those synths in sync in front of a live audience he's dam good. Most of your new so called musicians caint Evan do this live they record there shit on a laptop thin play back and to top it off lipsync to it.
@DJDjoer7 жыл бұрын
two great synth-lovers together. with a great crowd lovin it too. what a long applause. by the way, the midi problem i recognize too. but... with a roland mv8800 and fantom, or other programable synths, you can chance styles/patches too. althoug, you really had to think what you like to modulate live, since those synths holdin back on controllers/knobs. its a work around. not perfect as always. what i really want to ask, are thos xd synths worth it? like a jupiter 80 and v-synth gt or the older xt? because they also have a wide viraty of control.. and if i was forgotten it.. like piano shack (now more in france) and kebu. watching you close...

@WoodyPianoShack7 жыл бұрын
hi gabriel, auto levels was off, , unless switch got knocked to on...? i'll check when i get home. I set gain manually to about 10 out of 100. kebu does have quite a side-chainy sound...

I saw 3 of the concerts in this Roland promo tour live on facebook, and this was the only one where the microphone sound from Kebu also was working. The video and audio quality was really poor on the live stream, so the only interesting part was the discussion, which was missing on the other events... Kebu is a really nice guy, I have met him several times and even bought a keyboard from him a long time ago (that's how I met him for the first time before all the youtube fame), but also been on several of his gigs in Finland (and of course have all his releases). And your channel has been very interesting and useful, like I was watching your video about purchasing an old second hand synth before I bought my M1 and you had used a M1 as an example... :) Greetings from Helsinki, Finland. :)

Actually this sound almost the same. The only big and dissapointing for me difference is here: 14:44. The notes from the Roland are only a shadow of those who were originally played on the Arp Axxe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXS8maWbgpyel9E Well, maybe Kebu didn'have time to program the Roland...
@StefanoPapaleo-TS7 жыл бұрын
I don't know, it might very well be so, but you have to consider what Woody said... the audio quality of the recording of this gig is not that good so I would not base my judgement on what it's admitedly a bad recording. What most of old gear and analogue fans often forget when commenting on KZbin is also that a) although YT is the most used music service, it is not top notch audio b) each analogue synth sounds a bit different even if its the same model from the same year... hell... even the very same machine does not sound exactly the same from day to day c) much depends also on the whole signal chain - which may not be exactly the same from gig to gig, song to song etc. Even small adjustments to EQ or compression or even a few dBs in volume can change the character of a sound. Want a fair comparison? You should then play the 2 different instruments with the same exact velocity in the same exact room, connected to the same exact audio system, effects etc., otherwise it is more in the realm of comparing apples with oranges, both good fruits but quite different ;)
@ata0000017 жыл бұрын
But for that part he has been using several synths, originally in the demo there was the ARP AXXE, later he used an ARP Odyssey and lately a Korg Poly-61 (I was on his latest concert before the Roland tour and the Poly-61 was used there) and the JX-Xa on the Roland tour, so it hasn't always been the Axxe. There hasn't been an ARP on his live setup for a while, but it seems to change from time to time what he has in the live setup.

The RD-2000 was used as a midi controller, he said so in the Q&A, controlling for example the VP-03. But I guess he could have had another controller for that. The RD-2000 is really nice though. I don't know the terms of his collab with roland, but if I got the chance to have a roland collaboration, and they told me to make a list of gear that I needed, that I could then keep, and I felt like I needed a controller, I would aboslutely try to get the RD-2000, rather than any other controller (not that it is a controller per se, it is a stage piano, with built in physical modelled piano, and loads of samples, even a lot of synth samples, like jupiter strings, but it is also a controller).
@WoodyPianoShack7 жыл бұрын
good points! rd2000 is overkill if just used as a controller for a boutique, but wouldn't turn one down... :)
@TheJonHolstein7 жыл бұрын
Would have been kind of cool though, if they had left enough space on the right for a Boutique =) The Yamaha AN1x and CS1x had a free top panel space, with a lip, to hold a sound-module/sequencer (QY100/QY70/QY20/QY10 or SU10). Imagine the RD2000 with a perfect slot on the top panel for the D-05 =) (or any other boutique to complement the sound pallette it comes with)

He said he liked vintage gear, because of the unpredictability, but still he apparently uses the JD-XA normaly these days. And that has digital voices, so perhaps he takes advantage of that as well.
@ata0000017 жыл бұрын
Jon Holstein He has been using the JD-XA as a backup synth if some of his vintage synths fail during a tour and that has happened several times. That's also why he has created most of his sounds from other synths with the jd-xa also, so he can replace any of the failed synths with a jd-xa. At least couple of his Korgs have failed and been replaced on some gigs with the jd-xa. He has even published his sound bank made for the JD-Xa.

This just shows that you don't need every f*ing synthesizer there is or even the latest or most expensive to make music. You can replace one brand with another. Sure, there will be differences, but nothing normal humans can't live with. All you need is a healthy selection and enough to produces enough voices, but that's about it.

He is just a synth freak who made it to the alley of fame.Thats it.And yes a talented musician for sure,but there are so many great unknown synth gurus out there,who make great music too for who the world knows only trough soundcloud or KZbin videos,but don't have the fame Kebu has.

Kebu sold his soul to the devil (who's name is Roland) His Korg monopoly sounds more fat than any of the added modern Roland gear. Gone are the c.v.'s , all midi now. In a few years we see him with a laptop and vst's...Can't blame him though. Analoque is the past ! ( but i love it )
