We now have the stone hearth pad complete and wood stove installed in our off grid cabin! This stone hearth pad was very cheap since we used natural stones found around the cabin. I love how this DIY stove hearth pad turned out. Having our first fire in the cabin was an exciting achievement and makes the cabin feel so cozy in our Canadian winter forest!

How exciting to finally have some heat in your gorgeous Cabin. Nothing better than free, so amazing! The idea you had for the hearth came out fantastic. Very nice in your placement of the stones. It is indeed rustic and looks wonderful.

Your cabin is so beautiful and you did a great job laying out that hearth and mortaring it all in. It's cool seeing everything come together. When you get a few minutes, look up how to build a "top down" fire. It's so much better than any other method of making a wood fire. Once you have it laid out, you light it and close the door. You don't have to tend it and keep it going, plus you get less smoke in your home. The smell of a wood-burning fire is nice...in small doses, but if you've heated with wood very much, you know it can quickly become a problem. The top down method of starting a fire is very efficient and results in virtually no smoke getting into the house.

You should have put down 30lb. felt before putting the mortar down.If you ever have to remove the pad it is going to be a bear to remove the cement residue. Have you asked the people you got the stove from if you should have a combustion air intake duct? Is there an air space behind the metal shield? If not there should be.
