DIY Fireplace Stone Surround | Natural Stone Hearth Installation

Building a natural stone hearth fireplace and surround for our off grid cabin. For this process we are using stones that were gathered on our property! In our next video we will be refinishing and installing an Antique Cast Iron Wood Stove so we can place it on our new stone hearth.

I hope it’s holding up, it does look cool. I noticed you didn’t put an air gap behind the vertical face. Be careful to monitor that heat so it doesn’t combust your wall. What type of rock did you use? Some types of stone hold moisture and can explode when it turns to steam. Perhaps some additional heat shields on your stove will give you some insurance?

It's been almost 2 years with no issue, and this is not my first hearth build in the same fashion... Never had a problem doing it this way.

As long as local codes don't require the air gap there shouldn't be any issues with resale. If it is required, I would be concerned about the home inspector picking up on it.
