Backward cross-over tutorial by inline skater Bill Stoppard. Inline skating crossovers are for more than just turning; these tips can help unlock this powerful tool for creating surprising skating speed.
City skater / rollerblader Bill Stoppard practiced for many years in padding. A helmet is highly suggested for backward skating practice. The best inline skater will pad it out when in doubt.
Inline skates are SEBA High from Pro Skaters Place - www.skatersplace.ca Inine Skating in Toronto, Beaches

Bill, like yourself, I can skate backwards decently when tooling around a rink or controled area. But I have this great fear of transitioning from forward to backwards on the street at great speed. This is something I don’t think I’ve seen you do either. I’ve seen you skating in a couple of videos were guys you were with did it several times, but you neglected to follow suit. Maybe it was on the NYC skate. I have much respect for these fearless guys doing it. This is something I strive for and am practicing on. But it makes me wonder if I can ever succeed past this mental block, because of seeing someone like you that has so much time on and experience on skates still showing similar blockage. Let me know if I’m wrong and direct me to a video where you are making the transition forward to backwards skating at speed on a hill on the street. Happy skating.

I’m only just dipping my toes into backward crossovers. I almost got hit by a car multiple times doing something stupid And going to the road. I try to avoid having people get angry at me, so I need to be smarter. I sometimes clear a couple miles of litter while skating, doing transitions and as many tricks as I can to get better. Dislocated shoulder, luckily no broken bones and I’m skating the next day, my arm is still totally numb lol

Hey I just bought a new Seba high skates cause of your videos! Anyway the shop owner told me to break in to the new skates by skating without putting on the laces to let the shoe " expand properly ". This seems abit strange to me and when I skated awhile without the laces the skates feels very very loose and causes abrasion... Any advice? And is it true I must break in without the laces? Thanks!
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 9 жыл бұрын
Leaving the laces out is good old fashioned bad advice. Try taking the heel cup absorber off the bottom off the line; it's velcroed. This will give you more room, and will fit it back in later easily. If you skate with your SEBA highs unlaced your foot will shift and this is not good for you or your skating and can lead to injury.

This may sound absurd but would it be okay to cut off the rubber stopper on my recreational skates. They sometimes get in the way and aren't too efficient either as well as boring. I also don't like how my skates are unbalanced and don't want to get a new pair of aggressives since my recreational skates are still in good condition.

On my moms account "minde darr" I asked you a while ago if you were ever gonna get speed blades with the 100-110mm wheels. You said maybe this summer. And well, this summer is over and I haven't been catching up on your vids so I haven't had a chance to look at your vids and see if you have bought them. So I just wanted to ask you here. Have you thought about getting them yet?

Powerslide Hurricane wheels, 80mm 85A. They`re cheap, but what do you guys think about them, are they any good ? i cant afford spending a lot of money on wheels, but i dont want to buy crap ones either. Currently rolling Rollerblade stock wheels (spark 80)

I think you could do better for the money. If youre in the U.S. Id check out Inline Warehouse and Roller Warehouse for wheels. Pro Skaters Place is good for Canadians and Americans alike. Ive skated Gyro and Seba wheels and like both. Ive also skated blank wheels and stock k2 wheels which were terrible. In my experience, higher quality wheels last long enough to pay for themselves. Your mileage may vary though (pun intended).

Technically the toe flick refers to foot flexion (= plantarflexion), not extension (= dorsiflexion). It's counter-intuitive, but extension of the foot is moving your toes up. Weird..,. but true. In the backward footage it seems to be correct though. So I guess I should just not be too much of a DB and shut up, Awesome vid!
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 9 жыл бұрын
Not sure if there's a cultural variance here; plantarflexion = extension here, while dorsiflexion = flexion. The latin prefix 'dorsi' (top) conveys which part of the foot is flexing or drawing toward prime movers, while 'plantar' (bottom) refers to the movement toward the inverse prime movers. 'Extension' is easy to understand and is a sound technical term when describing the increasing of the angle between appendage and limb. So it's unlikely plantarflexion will get any air time. Could you imagine all the graphics, titles and explanations I would have to construct if I started busting out in Latin anatomical and biomechanics terminology?
@icternol
@icternol 9 жыл бұрын
Nah. What you said in the vid was pretty clear. No need to confuse people with weird terms. The point is that the term should consistent for hands and feet. If you flex your wrist, the palmar side of your hand moves to your arm. So if you flex your ankle, the plantar side of your foot should go towards your leg... sort of. Ouch. Down anyway. It's a large angle. Therefore the inverse of flexion (i.e. extension) makes the toes go up. The increasing angle in this case is the angle between the calf and the plantar side of the foot, which is counter-intuitive because normally we consider the sharpest angle between the body parts in question. :P
