Utilized in all martial arts, this is very important to know how to do, and do properly. The backward roll, or backwards shoulder roll, will keep you save and get you out of sticky situations. It is great movement and should be done daily to stay limber and warm up.
- Hi. Perry Wirth with Neutral Ground North. And I'm gonna show you a common warm-up technique that we do that's called a Backwards Roll. Now, the goal of our Backwards Roll is to make sure that we don't go over our head. Our heads are big objects, they get in the way if I try to go straight over it's gonna get in the way. So what I'm gonna do, first up, is I'm gonna tilt my head to the side. I'm gonna create an opening between my shoulder and my ear. Now I'm gonna roll through that hole. To make things easier what I like to do, is I take my arm out, I go back and once I go back I bring my knees to my chest. That creates the momentum to go through. Now to see it from another angle. Tilt my head to the side. Arm goes out. Roll back, knees to my chest. And come through.
