Backwards Facing w/ Forward Facing Sonar while Trolling. Brown Trout

Using the Garmin Livescope in forward facing mode to look backwards at our bait and hardware while trolling for Brown Trout in Maine.
Travelling around 0.8 to 1.5 mph and trolling with the downriggers and also lead core line with fly rods on the outside. See how the fish react, follow, sniff, swipe at the bait and eventually get caught.

Garmin has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made and I know Joe agrees with me! It will teach you and reassure you that the things you’ve always thought are happening right before your eyes! We are still learning through lots of follows of what they like and trying to figure out things that will trigger the bite! Another great video bud.. we will fine tune this strategy and hopefully be able to share more of this with others to help them out!!

A friend of mine told me he pops his line out of the downrigger clasp if he thinks he has one following. As the bait floats up the lakers will chase them up and he gets lots of bites that way. That would be very cool to see on the live scope. Awesome video as always Joe.

I fish salmon and steelhead with the garmin, backtrolling and jigging. You can tell when your gear is messed up; you can see all the attempted strikes. I'll never fish w/o it.

We just pointed it backwards and locked it into a ram mount or homemade mount.

Basically just put it in the forward facing position and mount it on a pole mount secured to the boat and point it backwards. I like it in a non fixed position so as the boat turns you can stay on the baits

Thanks a lot Joe. I'll try it Sunday. I thought that is all you had to do but with the whole starboard and port side (the lvs 32) needs to point in different positions for forward position. I'll try and and let me know if it worked for me. Thanks a lot!!!

I use PS 31 by Garmin. I have mine mounted on a pole so I can pivot. A number of friends have them mounted on old Minn Kota transom mounts so they can adjust the direction. My unit can see 40° and 34 can only see 20°.

It would interesting to me to see if you could trigger those fish to bite by slowing down or speeding up the boat. Every once in a while I'll kick the boat in neutral or whack the throttle to speed up or slow down the bait.

I've done that with leadcore. Reef on the line and get bit instantly

Putting your motor in & out of neutral will cause the bait to slow, drop then rise again. When making a turn or zig-zagging fish often hit. Trolling steady-eddy fish might follow but to entice a hit you need to vary the movement of your lure, spinner, bait fish, etc. That is one main reason they follow but won’t hit.

I mounted the transducer on a pole mid way of the boat. The further you can get away from your trolling gear the more you can see because your beam gets wider. The other reason I put it there and not the front of the boat is so we can control what we are looking at by adjusting the transducer left and right. Hope this helps.
